Description

Oct. 6, 1953 J. KOLLMAN COVER FOR BAKE PANS Filed Sept. 12, 1952 ber 16 so as to position the free edge 20 of such flange i9 inside the frame member it, as shown in Figure 5 of the drawing. The body of the top member i1 located within the rim portions folded about the frame i6 is preferable arranged in lowered relation to the plane of the rim portions so as to create a bevelled shoulder 2 about said rim portion.
In accordance with the present invention, the frame member I6 includes opposed portions between which the free edge 20 of the flange I9 is gripped. To this end the portion of the frame member [6 overlapped by the free edge 20 of the flange I9 is provided with pairs of notches 22 and 23 arranged at selected intervals along the upper edge of the frame member it. Each pair of cooperating notches 22 and 23 defines an ear-like area, as shown in Figure 2, which is deformed and elongated to provide an extension 24 as shown in Figures 3 and 4. Such deformation and elongation is accomplished by subjecting the carlike area to pressure between dies or the like.
Incident to such deformation and elongation, the extension 2 and the portion of the area between said notches which joins the extension 24 to the frame I6 is offset inwardly from the face of the frame it overlapped by the free edge 20 of the cover flange l9 whereby the area between said notches and located below the upper limits of the frame it; provides a recess 2.5.
The extension 24 is initially bent from an upstanding position, as shown in Figure 5, to an angular position relative to the frame it, as shown in Figure 6. In such angular position of the extension 24, the flange 19 of the cover top member ii is adapted to be bent into conformity with the inner contour of the frame it so as to position the free edge 23 in overlapping engagement with the inside face of the frame 16 and close to the underside of the extension 24.
After the frame and cover are so assembled, as shown in Figure 6, pressure is applied to the face of the extension 24 to bend the latter toward the free edge 28 so as to lock the edge 2!! under said extension. The operation thus performed on the extension 24 is effective to locate the latter within a lane flush with the surface of the cover flange is extending therebelow whereby the inside face of the cover defined by such extensions 24 and the flange IQ of the cover overlapping the inside face of the frame It, presents a continuous wall free of offsets or shoulders which might otherwise hinder easy application or removal of the cover relation to the pan set. Thus the extension 24 acts on the edge portion 20 overlapped thereby to force the latter into the recess 2'5 formed in the frame [6 opposite the extension 24 to produce an interlocked relationship between the extension 25, the recess, and the edge portion of the cover flange therebetween. The cover is preferably provided with an opening 26 in upward alignment with each extension 24 whereby a suitable tool for bending the extension 24 into overlapping relation to the edge of the cover flange as shown in Figures 6 and '7, may be moved into engagement with the outwardly facing of the extension 24 from a position outwardly of the cover.
While the form and arrangement of the parts as shown in the drawing and as above described are preferred, the invention is not to be limited to such form and arrangement except so far as the claims may be so limited, it being understood that changes might well be made in the construction without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is:
1. A baking pan cover comprising a marginal metal frame member, a separate topmember consisting of a single sheet of metal having its marginal portions folded inwardly about said frame member with the edge of said marginal portions terminating interiorly of the frame, said latter edge of the marginal portions being overlapped and engaged by an integral portion of said frame member rebent upon itself.
2. A baking pan cover comprising a marginal metal frame, a separate top member consisting of a single sheet of metal having its marginal portions folded inwardly about said frame member with the edge of said marginal portions terminating interiorly of the frame, said latter edge of the marginal portions being overlapped and engaged by an integral extension of said frame member rebent upon itself.
3. A baking pan cover comprising a marginal metal frame member, a separate top member consisting of a single sheet of metal having its marginal portions folded inwardly about said frame member with the edge of said marginal portions terminating interiorly of the frame, said latter edge of the marginal portions being overlapped and engaged by an integral extension of said frame member rebent upon itself and posi-' ticned within a plane defined by the interiorly facing surface of the marginal portions of the cover lying outside the area underlying the extension.
4. A baking pan cover comprising a marginal metal frame member having an angularly bent extension projecting inwardly from one edge thereof, a separate top member consisting of a single sheet of metal having its marginal portions folded inwardly about said frame member with the edge of said marginal portion terminating interiorly of the frame in proximity to the corner defined by the inner face of the frame and said angular extension, said extension being further bent to overlap and have interlocking relation with the aforesaid edge of the marginal portion.
5. A baking pan cover comprising a marginal metal frame member having an angularly bent extension projecting inwardly from one edge thereof, a separate top member consisting of a single sheet of metal having its marginal portions folded inwardly about said frame member with the edge of said marginal portion terminating interiorly of the frame in proximity to the corner defined by the inner face of the frame and said angular extension, said extension being further bent to overlap and have interlocking relation with the aforesaid edge of the marginal portion and a recess in the inner face of the frame opposite said extension and the area of the marginal portion of the cover overlapped by said extension, in which said extension and the marginal portion of the cover overlapped by said extension are confined within a plane defined by the inwardly facing surface of the marginal portion of the cover lying outside the area overlapped by the extension.
