Description

EDWARD WIRTHS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y; y
`SKATE EAsTInvnva Specification of Letters Patent No. 26,542, dated December 20, 18519.`
To all whom 'it may concern: y
Be it known that I, EDWARD WIRTHS, of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use certain new and useful Improvements in Skates; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description of the` same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked therein, in which*- Figure I, is a view of an ordinary skate, with my improvement attached. A showing the. skate. B, B, two side pieces attached to the skate A on either side, and when fastened together by means of the straps and buckles (C, C, D, D) serving to attach in connection with the heel-band (E) the skate (A) to the foot 0f the wearer, as well as to protect the same. C, C, straps for fastening these side pieces.` D, D, buckles for the same. E, the heelband. F, showing one of two metallic pieces, to which the side pieces (B B) are riveted, and which (F) being attached directly to a screw (G Fig. II) serves to accommodate, by rendering the side pieces (B, B) adjustable, the skate to feet of different sizes.
Fig. II, a view of the side pieces (B, B) showing` their mode of attachment to the skate A, B, B showing the side pieces. C, C straps for fastening the same. D," D, buckles for the same. F, F are two metallic side pieces, to which the side pieces (B, Id3) are riveted.
attached and which render the side pieces (B, B) adjustable, and accommodate 1. the skate A to feet of different sizes.
The nature of my invention consists in so attaching the side pieces (B, B) to the ordinary skate (A) that the same being adjustable by means of the screws (G, Gr) shall accommodate the skate (A) to a foot of any size, and at the same time answer as a cov- G, G, shows the screws, to` which the metallic pieces F, F are directly ering for the front portionI .offthe foot, i
serve in connection with ,thelieel-band 1;"1 Il to attach the skate (A) firmly to the (foot. To enable others skilled infthe art to make g and use my invention `I will `describe its con-` struction and operation.
To the ordinary skate (A) I attach nwe Siae pieces (13,13) formed of leather and fasy l 1 tened together by means of the straps and buckles (C, C, D, These side pieces form a covering or protection `for the front `l portion of the foot of the wearer and in con`- l nection with the heel-band serveas a means of attaching` the skate firmly j and securely to the foot` `of: the .wearerx y These sidel pieces (B, lB) are riveted to `me-` tallic pieces (F, F) whichfare` operateddi` rectly by screws (Gr, G), which ``acti1ig."as` 1 swivels, allow the side pieces" (B,"B), to ady. just themselves to j feetof 3( anyysize.` These@ screws (G, G) fit into recesses infa nietallidl plate inserted into the footboard` of "the skate (A) and are operatedlby hand, and
are formed by cutting a threadnpon a por`` i tion of the metallic piece cast fortliat purpose. By this means, theside-pieces (B, l are rendered adjustable,`;`a`n`d accommoslf date the skate (A) to the foot ofthe wearer, and when attached by means` ofthe: straps and buckles (C, C,D,D) forma protection` for the same.
I am aware that M.A:Vande`nbur`g obtain-edi a patent for providing an "elastic"frontliforI f adapting a skate to feetofdiferent sizes.
What I claim as new zanddesiretovsecure i The mode of attaching theiside-pieces "l B) to the skate (A) `for `the purpose of adaptingthe same to feet of different sizes,
when the same shall be arranged and oper!` ated as herein set forth.`
