3 Claims. (Cl. 2-20) This invention relates to a hand guard and it is a particular object of the invention to provide a device of this kind to protect the hand of a person, and more especially the fingers, against injury by a pin, needle or other pointed implement.

It is also an object of the invention to provide a device of this kind having means to properly direct the pointed end of an implement such as the pin of a safety pin with respect to the guard.

The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved hand guard whereby certain advantages are attained, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order that my invention may be better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the use of the present invention in the application of a safety pin to a piece of fabric;

Figure 2 is a view in top plan of the uard;

Figure 3 is a sectional view taken substantially on line 33 of Figure 2; and

Figure 4 is a view in elevation of the end of the guard which is engaged by the thumb.

In the embodiment of the invention as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, P denotes a plate possessing a certain degree of inherent flexibility and which may be of light metal, a plastic or such other material meeting the re quirements.

The plate P, in plan, has a substantially V- shaped configuration, with the inner and broader end portion l of a width closely approaching the combined widths of the idex and forefinger. The opposite sides of this portion l are extended to provide the laterally disposed and inwardly extending clips 2 each of which is substantially semi-circular with its open side directed toward the other clip across the rear or underside of the plate. These clips 2 engage around the index and forefinger of the hand to hold the plate across and along the outer portions of the aforesaid fingers and at the palm side of the hand.

When the plate P is in applied position the index and forefinger are preferably slightly spaced apart to accommodate the forward or top portion 3 of the pate P.

The longitudinal central portion of the plate P is provided along a major portionv of the length thereof with a relatively broad. depression or groove 4 which opens at the tip or forward end. This depression or groove 4 deepens from its inner end to its outer open end and for which reason the forward longitudinal central portion of the plate P is disposed on an inward incline to serve as a guide to properly direct the pointed extremity of a pin, needle, or the like for return penetration through the fabric with which the implement may be employed as in a pinning operation or in a sewing operation.

The back central portion of the plate P is depressed, as at 5, to provide a seat for the thumb of the hand to which the guard is applied to facilitate the use of the thumb for maintaining the device in applied position.

The guard as herein comprised is of particular advantage in applying the usual diaper pins and the hand is effectively protected against injury and at the same time the outer or pointed extremity of the pin after being pierced through the fabric will be directed back through the material for sealing within the usual head of the diaper pin.

The general contour of the plate P is such as to assure ready and proper insertion of the fingers between the overlapping portions of the diaper and the body of the child.

From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a hand guard constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly Well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it is assembled and operated.

I claim:

1. A guard to be held between the tips of the fingers of a hand and a fabric or the like body to protect the fingers from injury by pin, needle and the like; said guard comprising a substantially V-shaped plate having a front and back face, curved finger clips joined to the side edges of the plate at the wide end thereof and extending under the said back face, and an elongate channel formed in the front face of the plate from the apex and extending along the longitudinal center through the major part of the length thereof, the channel opening through the apex end of the plate and decreasing to zero depth at its other end.

2. The invention according to claim 1, wherein the central channel portion of the plate is disposed at an acute angle to the plane of the face of the plate.

3. The invention according to claim 1, with a thumb receiving depression in the face of the plate at and opening through the center of the edge remote from the apex.
