Description
Patented Sept. 22, 1953 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIQE 2,652,736 WRENCH EXTENSION HANDLE Louis H. Kiene," Pasadena, Calif.
Application January 19, 1951, Serial No. 206,801
This invention relates to extension handles for nut and pipe wrenches, and in particular an extension handle having clamping means on one end for readily clamping the extension on the end of a handle of a wrench whereby the leverage of the wrench is increased.
The purpose of this invention is to provide an extension handle that may readily be attached to nut and pipe wrenches where extra force is required to turn pipes or fittings, bars, or bolts, lock nuts, and the like.
Various devices have been provided for increasing the length of wrench handles, particularly such as placing pipes or tubes over the handles, but for certain uses it is desirable to positively clamp an extension to the end of a handle. With this thought in mind this invention contemplates an extension member having positive clamping means on one end thereof wherein the clamping means is positioned to receive the extended end of a wrench handle.
The object of this invention. is, therefore, to provide means for positively clamping an extension member on the end of a handle of a wrench.
Another object of the invention is to provide an extension handle for extending the leverage of wrench handles that may be attached to handles of wrenches without changing the design or arrangement of the wrench or handle thereof.
A further object of the invention is to provide an extension element for wrench handles which is of a simple and economical construction.
With these and other objects and advantages in view the invention embodies an elongated wood or metal member with wrench handle clamping means on one end thereof and with a hand gripping extension on the opposite end.
Other features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description taken in connection with the drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view illustrating the extension handle clamped to the end of the handle of a pipe wrench.
FigureZ is a cross section through clamping elements of the extension handle taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a similar section taken on line 33 of Figure 1 showing a pin positioned to extend into an opening in the end of a wrench handle.
Figure 4 is a detail illustrating a modification wherein a clamp of a different type is used for holding an extension member on the end of a Wrench handle.
Figure 5 is a cross section taken on line 5-5 of Figure 4 illustrating the clamping bracket shown in Figure 4.
1 Claim. (Cl. 81-177) Figure 6 is a similar detail illustrating a further modification wherein the wrench handle receiving socket is provided on the end of the extension member.
Figure 7 is a cross section through the modifled mounting shown in Figure 6.
Figure 8 is a detail showing a further modification wherein a wedge-like clamping element is provided for the opening in the end of the wrench handle. v
Referring now to the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts the improved wrench extension handle as shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3 is formed'with a bar It having a U-shaped section at one end formed with a back I I and an upper arm I2, and as illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, a wrench handle 2| is secured in the opening I4 between the bar I0 and arm I2 by a pin I5 having a head It on one end and being provided with a cotter pin I? Which is extended through the opposite end. The pin I5 is positioned in an opening I8 in the bar I0 and extends through a similar opening I9 in the arm I2.
With the parts arranged in this manner an opening 20 in the end of the handle 2I of a pipe wrench 22 is positioned over a stud 23 carried by the bar It and provided with a head 24, and with the end of the handle 2| pivotally mounted on the stud 23 and with the pin I5 removed the handle 2| is moved into the opening I4, as indicated by the arrow 25 and with the handle in position the pin I5 is inserted and the pin is secured in position by the cotter pin I'I- After the device is used the extension member Ii! may readily be removed and the wrench used in the conventional manner. The outer end of the extension member IIl may be provided with a hand gripping lever or extension 26, which may be of any suitable shape or design.
In the modification illustrated in Figures 4 and 5 an extension handle 2'! is provided with openings 28 and 29 and an L-shape bolt providing a bracket 30 is positioned with a threaded end 3I thereof and on which a nut 32 is positioned, extended through the opening 2 8, as shown in Figure 5. The opposite end of the bolt or bracket 30 is provided with an eye 33 and a bolt 34 having a head 35 on one end is extended through the eye 33 and through the opening 29 with a handle M of a wrench in the bracket. The handle H is clamped in position by a nut 36 on the threaded end of the bolt 34, with this nut coacting with the nut 32 and the threaded end 3I of the bracket 30. The extension handle 21 is also provided with a stud 3 31, similar to the stud 23, and the stud 31' is positioned to extend into the opening 20 in the end of the wrench handle 2|, as shown in Figure 4.
In the modification illustrated in Figures 6 and '7 the wrench handle 2| is clamped by a bracket 38, which is U-shape in cross section, as shown in Figure '7, and flanges 39 and 40 in the sides of the bracket are bolted to an exten sion handle or bar 4| by bolts 42 and 43 at the sides and also by a bolt 44 that extends through an eye or opening 20 in the end of the wrench handle. The bolts 42, 43 and 44 are provided with conventional nuts, as shown in Figure '7. In this design the end of the extension handle 4| may be provided with an enlarged section 45, as shown in Figure 6.
In the design illustrated in Figure 8 a conical shaped wedge-like member 46 is clamped in the opening 20 in the end of the wrench handle 2| by a bolt -41, the head 48 of which is positioned in a countersunk recess 40 and the opposite end of which is provided with a nut 50.
With these different arrangements of clamping members the extension handle |0, or a similar wood, plastic, or metal bar, is clamped on the end of a wrench handle, to extend the length and consequently the leverage thereof whereby extra force may be app-lied to the wrench for turning pipes, fittings, bars, bolts and nuts, and with the parts arranged as shown and described the extension member, which may be solid, as shown, or of other suitable formation, is applied to the handle of the wrench with the wrench in position upon the Work, or may be applied before the wrench is in position, and after use the extension member may readily be removed from the wrench.
It will be understood that other modifications may be made in the design and arrangement of the arts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is:
In an extension for a tapered Wrench handle having an opening in its end, a bar having one side in contact with one side of said handle and including an enlarged terminal section, a bracket arranged contiguous to said one side of said bar and including a pair of flat aligned portions, and an intermediate ofiset portion defining a tapered socket for receiving said wrench handle, securing elements extending through said flat portions and through said enlarged section, "said securing elements being arranged on opposite sides of said socket, and a securing element extending through said bar, through the opening in said wrench handle, and through said offset portion.
