4 Claims.
1 This invention relates to lamp shade holders for electric lamps, and more particularly to harp swivels for adjustably mounting a lamp shade upon a lamp harp, and is an improved form of lamp shade holder over that disclosed and claimed in my United States Patent No. 2,495,209 granted January 24, 1950.
It is a principal object of the invention to provide a simple harp swivel construction in which the lamp shade may be adjusted at an angle about an axis of a transverse member of a lamp harp, and similarly adjusted angularly about an axis at right angles to the first-mentioned axis as the harp swivel may be adjusted or rotated in either direction about said axis of the transverse member.
Another object of the invention is to provide a harp swivel including the mounting for the lamp shade which is clamped together for frictionally holding the lamp swivel in its various adjusted swivel comprising a support member which swivels upon the lamp harp for adjusting the lamp shade in one direction, and a sup-port to which the lamp shade is attached providing an adjustment at right angles to the first-mentioned adjustment, wherein the harp swivel may be adjusted with respect to the harp of the lamp with an indeterminate number of adjustments in either plane as the lamp shade is swung upon the lamp harp.
I have also provided another embodiment of a harp swivel similar to the first embodiment by employing a slotted, cup-shaped member adapted to rotate about the axis of a transverse mem- 4 her of a lamp harp, and limiting the angular adjustment in either direction about an axis perj pendicular to the first axis as the harp swivel is -swiveled upon the lamp harp.
Many other objects and advantages of the construction herein shown and described will be obvious to those skilled in the art from the disclosure herein given.
To this end my invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement, and combination of parts herein shown and described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring now to the accompanying drawing forming part of the specification;
Fig. 1 is a vertical view of a lamp harp provided with the improved harp swivel;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged view, partly in section, illustrating the harp swivel and decorative knob for adjusting the lamp shade;
Fig. 3 is a vertical, sectional view taken along line 3-3 of Fig. 2 illustrating the frictional connection for the pivot connections of the harp swivel;
Fig. 4 is an enlarged view similar to Fig. 2 illustrating a modified form of harp swivel connection;
Fig. 5 is a vertical, sectional view taken along line 5-5 of Fig. 4 illustrating the pivot connections of the modified harp swivel; and
Fig. 6 is an enlarged, perspective view of the cup-shaped member for limiting the adjusting movement of the harp swivel of the embodiment of Fig. 4.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing, an improved harp swivel connection It is mounted on a lamp harp II for supporting a lamp shade frame l2 in a well-known manner. The conventional lamp harp H has a bottom connection I3 for mounting on the lamp base, and a transverse support I4 upon which the swivel connection is adjustably mounted. The harp swivel Iii preferably comprises a support member [5 substantially U-shaped swingably mounted upon the transverse support 14. A lamp shade mounting I6 is pivotally mounted upon the support member l5 at the point of connection thereto, so that it swings about its axis perpendicular to the axis of the transverse member I4. Suitable means for fastening the lamp shade mounting to the support member 15 is preferably formed as a rivet or rivet connection ll. In assembling the support member I5 and the lamp shade mounting l6 by riveting, the rivet I1 is so assembled that the harp swivel assembly I!) is retained in its adjusted position either about the transverse support I4, or in its adjusted position about the axis transverse to that of the support tending, threaded stud 2|. It is preferred to form the lamp shade mounting I6 as a molded or die cast member, although it is within the scope of the invention that it may be suitably fabricated of from rods of the diameter of the disk-shaped portion I9, preferably as a screw machine operation and a milling machine operation.
It is preferred to secure the support member I and lamp shade mounting I6 by riveting in order that the two members are so assembled that, in whatever adjusted position of the support member I5 about its transverse axis and the angular adjustment of the lamp shade It about its axis provided by the rivet connection II, the members I5 and It will be frictionally afiixed together to be held in their respective adjusted positions. It is to be understood, however, that it is within the scope of the invention that the members may be affixed together with any other suitable form of connection, such as screw and nut. Referring to Fig. 3, in order to provide this frictional joint, the member I5 is U-shaped, and when riveted or afifixed together to the lamp shade mounting I6, the legs of the U-shaped member I5 are frictionally clamped to the projection I8, and to the transverse support I4, as shown.
With this improved form of harp swivel, it is possible to adjust the lamp shade I2 in any position about the axis of the transverse support I4. It is also possible to swing the lamp shade about the axis of the rivet connection Il between the members I5 and I 6 in either direction in any adjusted position of the support member I5 about its tranverse axis. It is thus obvious that a simple form of universal connection has been provided for a harp swivel for adjusting the lamp shade mounted thereon in any desired position.
Referring to Figs. 4 and 6, I have also provided another embodiment of my invention in a harp swivel connection similar to that illustrated and described above in connection with Figs. 1, 2, and 3, but which provides a shield for the swivel connection, and also limits the angular adjustment of the harp swivel about the pivotal axis between the support member I5 and lamp shade mounting I6. Like reference characters will denote the smaller similar parts, and only those parts will be particularly described which have been slightly modified from that of the first embodiment.
The modified swivel connection or harp swivel 22 comprises the U-shaped support member I5 somewhat smaller than that of the previously described u-shaped member I5 affixed to a modified lamp shade mounting I6. The members I5.- and I6 are riveted together in the same manner by the rivet connection I! to provide for frictional engagement of the U-shaped member I5 with a downwardly extending projection I8. A disk-shaped support 23, similar to the diskshaped member I9 but smaller in diameter, is provided since it is only necessary to support a cup-shaped member 24 which, in this embodiment, serves as a support for the lampshade frame I2. The lamp shade frame is aflixed to the harp swivel connection 22 by an ornamental knob 20 in threaded engagement with the threaded stud 2 I.
The cup-shaped member 24, which provides a support for the lamp shade frame I2 by the surface 25, is formed with an opening 25 through which is positioned the threaded stud 2I for mounting the cup-shaped member upon the harp swivel 22, the member 24 and stud 2| being secured together by suitable means, as for example,
a press fit. The downwardly extending peripheral surface 21, which forms a shield for the harp swivel, is provided with diametrically positioned slots 28 in which is positioned the transverse member I4 of the lamp harp I I.
Upon adjustment of the harp swivel about its axis formed by the riveted connection II in any position of the support member I5, the slots 28 permit this angular adjustment, and the maximum adjustment about the rivet connection I! in either direction is limited by the depth of the slots 28.
A previously described above with respect to the embodiment of Figs. 1, 2, and 3, the support member I5, the projection I8, and the transverse support I4 are frictionally held together to maintain the harp swivel 22 in any of its adjusted positions, either about the axis of the rivet connection IT, or about the axis of the transverse member II. The member I5 frictionally engages the peripheral surface of the transverse member I4 as it, is angularly adjusted.
In assembling the harp swivel connections I0 and 22 of each embodiment to a conventional form of lamp har II, the members I5 and I5 are fabricated into the U-shaped constructions shown in Figs. 3 and 5. The members I5 and I5 are then assembled upon their respective transverse support I4, after which the lamp shade mountings I6 and I6 are assembled to their respective support members I5 and I 5 by riveting, and the rivet connection I! provided is such that a frictional adjustment is provided between the members I5, I5 and their respective projections I8, I8 to which they are attached. Similarly, the members I5 and I5 are frictionally attached to their respective transverse support I4 so that in any adjusted position of the harp swivel, the variou members thereof are frictionally held in their adjusted position. The ornamental knob 20 may then be threaded upon the respective studs for the embodiment of Fig. 1, and in the embodiment of Figs. 4, 5, and 6, the cup-shaped member 24 is mounted upon its stud 2I, after which the knob 20 may be mounted as shown in Fig. 4. In either of the constructions, the lamp shade is attached or detached by removing the ornamental knob 20 and placing the lamp shade frame I2 in position upon the respective harp swivels II] or 22', as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 4, after which the ornamental knob is reassembled.
It is thus evident that there has been disclosed two embodiments of a simple form of harp swivel connection which permits of universal adjustment of the lamp shade upon the lamp harp, which is furnished with the harp swivel of this invention. Irrespective of the adjusted position of the harp swivel in any direction, the lamp shade is frictionally held in its adjusted position, but it. may be moved into any other adjusted position with a simple movement through the ornamental knob 20.
It is also obvious that there has been described two embodiments of a preferred form of harp swivel which are simple and economical to manufacture. Although the various parts of the embodiments of the harp swivels have been described as being fabricated from sheet metal and rods, it is to be understood that it is within the scope of the invention that they may be cast or molded from suitable material.
Having thu described my invention, it is obvious that various immaterial modifications may be made in the same without departing from th spirit of my invention; hence, I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact form, construction, arrangement, and combination of parts herein shown and described or uses mentioned.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with a lamp harp having a transverse support in the plane of the lamp harp for mounting a lamp shade, of a harp swivel comprising U-shaped means complementally formed to the transverse support for frictional engagement therewith and adjustably mounted upon the transverse support, stud means for detachably mounting a lamp shade, including a downwardly extending projection engaging the sides of the U-shaped means, adjustable angularly about a pivot connection to the U-shaped means, cup-shaped means for limiting the angular movement of the stud means for detachably mounting a lamp shade in either direction in a plane perpendicular to the axis of the pivot connection, and said cup-shaped means for limiting the angular movement provided with opposed slots complementally formed to the transverse support, whereby the stud means for detachably mounting a lamp shade is adapted to swing in either direction about the axis of the transverse support in any of the adjusted positions of the aforesaid means for detachably mounting a lamp shade about its pivot connection.
2. The combination with a lamp harp having a transverse support in the plane of the lamp harp for mounting a lamp shade, of a harp swivel comprising U-shaped means complementally formed to the transverse support to frictionally engage it and adjustably mounted upon the transverse support, stud means for detachably mounting a lamp shade, including a downwardly extending projection, and being adjustable angularly about a pivot connection to the U-shaped means, and cup-shaped means formed with oppositely spaced slots complementally formed to the transverse support and adapted to engage the transverse support permitting swinging of the harp swivel about the axis of the transverse support in either direction.
3. The combination with a lamp harp having a transverse support for mounting a lamp shade, of a harp swivel comprising a U-shaped support member swingably mounted upon the transverse support and complementally formed thereto to frictionally engage the transverse support, a lamp shade mounting provided with a stud and comprising downwardly extending means complementally formed to the U-shaped support, said lamp shade mounting swingably mounted upon the support member at an axis transverse to the support member, and rivet means extending through the support member and the downwardly extending means of the lamp shade mounting for frictionally affixing the lamp shade mounting to the support member and the U-shapecl support member to the transverse member, whereby the harp swivel is frictionally retained in its adjusted position either about the transverse support or in its adjusted position about the axis transverse to the support member.
4. The combination with a lamp harp having a rod-like transverse support for mounting a lamp shade, of a harp swivel comprising complementally formed members, one member of which forming a support member is swingably mounted upon the rod-like transverse support, and the other member is swingably mounted upon the first-mentioned member at an axis transverse to the transverse support, said last-mentioned member including a lamp shade mounting, a single securing means extending through the complementally formed members to form a pivotal connection for the complementally formed members at the aforesaid transverse axis, and said single securing means also frictionally ailixing the members together at the pivotal connection and the support member to the transverse support, whereby the harp swivel is frictionally retained in its adjusted position either about the transverse support or in its adjusted position about the axis transverse to the support member.
