The invention proper consists of a diaphragmtype pump H) which is mounted on a subbase I A motor l2, also mounted on the said subbase, serves to drive the pump. It will, however, be comprehended that the pump may be otherwise mounted and may be driven by any suitable source of motive power.
The subbase I! is preferably constructed of sheet metal having a platform l3 with a lateral wall structure l4 extending downwardly therefrom. The lowermost portion of this wall structure is formed with an outwardly extending flange |5 which is adapted to rest on the surface von which the pump is to be mounted and through which suitable bolts or lag screws [6 may be inserted to clamp the base in position. The platform |3 has a depression I1 in the same which serves to collect any oil leaking from the pump proper and to discharge the same through the base through an opening H3 in said depression.
The motor l2 may be of any standard construction and description of the same will not be given in detail. This motor consists of a 'housing l9 and to which a base is attached. Bolts 2| extending through said base and through the platform |3 of subbase |l serve to attach the motor to' the subbase. The motor has an armature shaft 22 which carries a sheave 23 and substantially rectangular in form to provide end walls and 3| and side walls 32 and 33. These walls are constructed with spaced sections 34 and 35 which are connected together at their upper ends by means of webs 36. This type of construction reduces the amount of material required and at t'he same time gives an upper surface 31 to the wall structure of appreciable width.- By means ofthis construction the resistance of the wall structure to compressive force is greatly increased. Extending transversely between the walls 32 and 33 is a transverse partition 38. This partition is similarly constructed with sections 39 and 40 and with a web 4| connecting the same together at their upper ends. The surface 42 of this web lies in continuation of the surface 3? of the wall structure 29 and the said surfaces lie in a common plane. By means of the construction provided two elongated compartments 43 and 44 are formed in the body 25 and which extend transversely of the same. The wall structure 29 and the partition 38 are curved at the ends of these compartments to give the said compartments an ovular cross section. The corners of the partition 38 and the wall structure 29 bounding the compartments 43 and 44 are rounded as indicated at 45. The entire body 26 is constructed from a molded plastic material which forms the surfaces 31' and 42 accurately and smoothly and which gives a rounded contour to the edges of the wall structure and partition bounding the compartments 43 and 44. This base has a wall structure 46 corresponding in shape to the wall structure 29 of body 26 and which has end walls 41 and 4B and side walls 49 and 50. The upper edge of the wall structure 46 structure 29 of body 23. This wall structure has end walls 55 and 56 and side walls 51 and 58. The said head further has an inner wall structure 59 which conforms to the inner sections 34 of wall structure 29 and to the sections 39 and 40 of partition 38 of body 26 and which is connected to the outer wall structure by means of webs60.
These webs have a surface 6| which faces the surfaces 31 and 42 of the body 26. The upper 'end of the wall structure 54 has a surface 62 faces 31 and '42 is a sheet 63 of flexible material such as rubber or the like. This sheet is clamped in position betweensaid surfaces as will be presently explained. Extending outwardly from the surfaces 6|, 37 and 42 are beads 64 which bite into the rubber and hold the same in place and also assist in preventing leakage along the said surfaces.
V Overlying the head 55 is the cap28. This cap is dome-shaped in form having a top 65 and a circular wall structure 66. The wall structure 66 of the cap 28 is more nearly circular as shown in Fig. 1 as compared to the rectangular form of the wall structure 54 of head 21. At the corners between the said two parts are formed flanges 69. The lower end of the wall structure 66 and the flanges 69 have a surface 61 which corresponds with the surface 62 of head 21 and which facesthe surfaces 62. A gasket 68 is disposed between these surfaces and forms a tight joint therebetween. Cap screws 10 extend through these flanges, through bosses 1| formed in the corners of the head 21 and through similar bosses 12 formed'at the corners of the body 26. These 'ings' l5 and 16 which are fitted into bores 11 in bosses 18 formed in the end walls 41 and 48 of the wall structure 46. Washers |29 overlie the edges of these bearings to restrain outward movement of the bearings and are held in position by means of screws I30 screwed into the bosses 18.

The gasket- 69 disposed between the surfaces-62 and 195i and between the corresponding surface 61 of the cap 28 forms a fluid-tight connection therebetween. In the cap 25 is formed a tapped inlet I09 which communicates with the compartment I02. The said cap is further formed with a tapped outlet III) which communicates with the compartment I03.
The wall structure 59 has a top portion I II which is formed with inlet ports H2 and with outlet ports II3. In the compartment 98 is disposed an inlet valve II4 which closes the port I I2 allowing fluid to enter the chamber 99 but preventing the escape of fluid therefrom. An outlet valve I I is located in the compartment I03 and is adapted to close the port I I3 leading to compartment 98. This valve is similar to the valve I I4 in construction. Similar inlet and outlet valves II4 and II 5 are located in the compartment 99 and the compartment I03 and communicate with the compartments I02 and 99 through certain of the ports.
The valves I I4, and H5 are all identical in construction and only one of the valves II4 which has been shown in detail in Fig. 2 will be described in detail. This valve consists of two discs of rubber H8 and H9 which are frusto-conical or dish-shaped in form. These discs are supported on formed backing members I and I2I which smooothly flt the interior of said discs. These backing members are mounted on a sleeve compartment 98.

The advantages of the invention are manifest. The device is extremely simple in construction and foolproof in operation. By the use of the plastic body and head, machining of the surfaces contacting the sheet of rubber is eliminated thereby permitting of manufacturing the pump with a minimum amount of machining. The parts are held together by means of four bolts and whenever the sheet of flexible material wears the parts can be taken apart and a new sheet readily substituted. By means of the type of valve used, grains of sand may readily pass through the same without injuring the valve. Hence the entire pump will operate for an extremely long period of time without attention. Both of the bearings for the crank shaft are mounted in the base independently of the body or head. Thus the machining for the bearings becomes exceedingly simple and correct alignment of the balls receiving the ball bearing races may be procured without eflort. The sheet of flexible material as well as formin diaphragms for the pump form a gasket sealing the head 21 and body 26. My improved pump by utilizing the ovularshaped pistons and piston chambers becomes exceedingly compact and utilizes a minimum amount of material.
Changes in the specific form of my invention, as herein described, may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is: 1. In a pump a body having a lateral wall structure forming a chamber therein open at the top, a partition in said body dividing said chamber into two compartments elongated in form, said wall structure and partition being curved at the ends of said compartments to make said compartments ovular in cross section, a piston in each ofsaid compartments ovular in form, a head overlying said body and formed with a lateral wall structure and having portions disposed opposite the ends of the'wall structure and partition of said body and forming two pressure compartments disposed above the first named compartments, a sheet of flexible material disposed between said head and body and engaging the ends of said wall structure and partition and said portions of the head and forming diaphragms for said pistons and a gasket between said body and head, a cap overlying said head and forming a space between said cap and said head, means on said cap and head forming a partition extending transversely of the partition in said body and dividing the space between said head and cap into an inlet compartment and an outlet compartment, outlet valves carried by the lateral Wall structure of said head and disposed in said outlet compartment one on each side of said first named partition and bringing said respective pressure compartments into communication with said outlet compartment, inlet valves carried by the lateral wall structure and disposed on the side of said last named partition opposite said outlet valves and disposed one on each side 01" said first named partition and bringing said inlet compartment into communication with the respective pressure compartments and means carried by the body and connected to said pistons for reciproeating said pistons.
2. In a pump a body, a head carried by said body and having a lateral Wall structure and a partition extending across the same and forming ,7 8 therein two juxtaposed elongated pressure compartments open at the bottom, flexible sheet like means clamped between said head and body and closing said compartments, and forming diaphragms, piston underlying said diaphragms, means carried by's'aid body and connected to said pistons for reciprocating said pistons, followers overlying said diaphragms and secured to said piston, said followers being elongated in form and conforming in configuration to the configuration of said compartments, a cap overlying said head and forming a space therebetween, means forming a partition between said head and cap and extending transversely of the partition in said head, and dividing'said space between said head and cap into an inlet compartment and an outlet compartment, outlet valves carried by said head and disposed in said outlet compartment one on each side of the partition in said head, and bringing the outlet compartment into communication with the respective pressure compartments, and inlet valves carried by the head and disposed on the side of said partition in said cap opposite said outlet valves and disposed in said pressure compartments and one on each side of the partition in said head, and bringing said inlet compartment into communication with the respective pressure compartments.
