This invention relates to a carbon paper support for use in manifold typewriters and the like and more particularly to a carbon pack support- An object of this invention is to provide an improved detachable supporting blade or arm for use in supportin carbon paper packs in manifold typewriting machines such, for example, as
that shown in my issued Patent No. 2,236,155.
Still another object of this invention is to provide attaching means for a'carbonpack supporting arm which may be readily disengaged from a supporting post to permit a quick removal of the arm and replacement of a new supply of carbon paper thereon.
A further object of the invention is to provide a supporting arm for carbon paper in a machine of the aforesaid type which will not necessitate separation of the plies of paper being typed in order to permit of the removal of the arm from and its reinsertion between plies of paper.
In accordance with the general features of this invention there is provided a manifold typewriter machine carbon paper supporting arm for lateral clamping engagement with a post at the side of the machine and provided on its supported end with latching means laterally engageable with the post without necessitating vertical movement of the arm in order to remove it from the post.
In accordance with other features of the invention there is provided a carbon pack sup:
porting arm for a multi-fold typewriter machine, the arm having an openin in an edge portion thereof for laterally receiving a supporting post of the machine and latching means movable into the opening to hold and prevent the arm from coming on said post until the means is moved out of the opening.
Other objects and features of this invention will more fully appear from the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing which illustrates a Single embodiment thereof and in which Figure 1 is a fragmentary plan view of a carbon paper supporting arm engaged with a post on the framework of a typewriting machine;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary side View, partly in section, taken on substantially the line IIII of Figure 1 looking in the direction of the arrows showing a plurality of supporting arms latched to the post;

As shown on the drawing:
The reference character 9 designates generally a portion of the framework of a manifold or multifold typewriter or billing machine. As shown in my aforesaid patent, it is old in the art to support on this framework 9 a plurality of vertically spaced carbon paper or pack arms which extend horizontally between the plies of paper in the machine. Such arms may extend from either or both sides of the machine between the plies of paper. I have designated my improved arm or blade by the reference character Hi. Any suitable number of these arms may be employed and for purposes of illustration, I have shown two of them in the drawing (Figure 2).
The arms are all identical and are carried in vertical spaced relationship on a supporting post ll fastened to the frame 9. Any suitable means may be employed for securing the post H to the frame such, for example, as spaced studs I2 extending through spaced openings in the frame 9 and held in place by locking C-shaped washers 13. My present invention is not concerned with l the manner in which the post II is fastened in place, but specifically with the manner in which the blades or arms Ill are detachably fastened to the post.
Heretofore it has been the practice to slide such arms vertically on the post I I, but I have found that this manner of attachment is disadvantageous in that it necessitates that the operator separate the plies of paper in order to permit of the vertical movement of the blades when it becomes necessary to remove them for any reason such, for example, as. to replenish the supply of carbon paper carried by the blades or arms. In some instances, new packs are applied to the armsand in other instances the arms permit of the unwrapping must be disengaged to of additional portions of carbon paper for insertion in the platen of the typewriting machine. I have designated generally by the reference character C a carbon pack carried by one of the arms IO although it is to be understood that the carbon paper or pack may be of any suitable construction or arrangement, my invention being here concerned with the detachable engagement of the arm to'the post and not specifically with the construction ofthe carbon paper pack.

A tension spring 2| has one end anchored to the arm 81 and another to the bladeand is positioned to snap past'the center line of the pivot l9 so as to hold the latching arm I! in either engaged or disengaged position. In other words, itis a so-called dead center type of spring which upon movement past the dead center will operate in either direction to retain the arm' I! in whichever position it is moved.
In addition, I provide the underside of each blade 16 with a small right angle spacer 22, one leg of which is fastened to the blade and the other of which serves as a 'spacing means. Referring to Figure 2, it will be perceived that this spacer 22 serves to space the lower blade ill from the frame 9 and in the case of the uppermost blade l0 spaces it from the immediately lower blade H).
In the application of'the blade in to the post ll, latching arm ll is moved to the dotted line position shown in Figure 3 whereby the blade l0 can be laterally applied to the post H. That is to say, the arm can be mounted on the post by a horizontal-movement rather than having to be .moved vertically. Once the blade Ill is positioned on the post with the post I I behind the abutment or shoulder 16, movement of the latching arm I! .from the dotted line position to the full line position (Figure 3) results in the frictional binding .of the blade andpost together.
Removal of the blade is easily effected by snap- ;ping the latching arm H to the disengaged dotted .line position {Figure '3) at which time the arm canbe slid laterally oiithe post as the opening l5 is then available for the post to pass therethrough.
-It will be underst ood that modifications and variations may be effected without departing from the scope of the novel concepts of the present invention. 7
I claim as my invention:
1. A manifold typewriting machine carbon paper supporting arm for lateral clamping engagement with a post on the side of the machine, said arm comprising a blade with an opening in an edge of the same so that the blade can be pressed laterally against-the post to engage said blade with said post in said opening, and means for detachably binding said blade to said post when the post is inside said opening, said blade at said opening having an abutment for engaging around and over an edge of said post and said binding means being engageable with an opposite edge of said post to cooperate with said abutment in holding said blade on said post. 7

A manifold typewriting machine carbon paper supporting arm for lateral clamping engagement with a post on the side of the machine, said arm comprising a blade with an opening in an edge of the sameso that the blade can be pressedlaterallyagainst the post to engage said blade with said post in said openingpmeans for .detachably binding said blade to said post when the post is inside said opening, and means for swinging said binding means under resilient pressure into and out-of said binding position.
3. A supporting arm assembly comprising a blade-like arm having an aperture in a portion thereof, a supporting post positionable in. said aperture upon" relativehorizontal movement of said arm and post, and means for detachably binding said arm to said post comprising a pivotal arm with a cam portion for frictionally bearing against-the post when ingripping position and movable to a disengaged position by swinging of said pivotal arm whereby theblade-like-arm can then be removed laterally from the post.
4. A supporting arm assembly comprising a blade-like arm having an aperture in a portion thereof,. a supporting post positionable in said aperture upon relative horizontal movement of said arm and post, means for detachably' binding said arm to said post comprising a'pivotal' arm with a cam portion for frictionally bearing against the post when in gripping position and movable to a disengaged position by swinging'of said pivotal arm whereby the blade-like arm can then be removed laterally from the post, and spring means supported by said blade-like armto be moved past dead center for holding the bladelike arm in engaged and disengaged positions.
5. A supporting arm assembly comprising a blade-like arm having an aperture in a portion thereof, a supporting post-positionable in said aperture upon relative horizontal movement of said arm and" post, and means for detachably binding said arm to said post comprising a pivotal arm with a cam portion for frictionally bearing against the post when in gripping position and movable to a disengaged position b swinging of said pivotal arm whereby the blade-like arm can then be removed laterally from the post, said aperture having a reduced area at one end defined by a shoulder and presenting an opening in an edge of the blade-like arm through which the post may enter the reduced area for disposition behind said shoulder. A sup-porting arm assembly comprising a blade-like arm having an aperture in a portion thereof, a supporting post positionable in'said apertureupon relative horizontal movement of said arm 'and post, and means for detachably' binding said arm to said post comprising a pivotal arm with a cam portion for frictionally bearing against the post when in gripping position and movable to a disengaged positionby swinging of said pivotal arm whereby the blade-like arm can then be'removed laterally fromthe post,'said aperturehaving a reduced area at one end defined by a shoulder and presenting an opening in an edge of the blade-like arm through which the post may enter the reduced area for disposition behind said shoulder, and said cam portion being movable into said opening to hold said blade-like arm with said post behind saidshoulder and to prevent removal of the blade-like arm until said pivotal arm is'pivoted to a disengaged position.
