This invention relates to improvements in wood working machines of the shaper types. More particularly, it has reference to the equipping of a shaper type machine with devices of novel construction and arrangement that adapts it for the manufacture of window sash parts and the like; thatis, a machine equipped with a cutter head designed to out tenons, grooves, or slots, and to shape the surfaces of pieces such as those used in the making of window sash and a carriage whereby pieces for that purpose may be held in position and moved past the cutter head for its operation thereon.
More specifically stated, the present invention resides in the provision of certain attachment parts designed for application to a well known type of shaper, now in general use, whereby wooden pieces, such as used for the making of window sash, can be readily formed with the necessary grooves and tenons for their being fitted, joinedand secured together.
Another object of the invention is to provide a combination of parts for the above purpose that may be applied to the frame structure of the selected shaper without requiring that it be reconstructed. i
Yet another object of the invention resides in the-provision of attachment parts of the char acter and for. the purpose above recited that are substantial and-long lasting; that are easy to use and which provide for the holding and moving of a plurality of pieces for the simultaneous formation of grooves and'tenons therein.
Still .further objects of the invention reside in the details of construction and combination of 3 Claims. (Cl. 144--136) parts, and in their mode of use, as will hereinafter be fully described.
, In; accomplishing the above mentioned and other objects of the invention, I have provided th'e'improved details of construction, the preferred' forms of which are illustratedin the accompanying drawings, wherein Fig. 1 is a'perspective view of a shaper of that type or kind to which the present invention has been designed for attachment.
Fig. 2 is a top or plan view of the present mechanism as applied to the shaper after removalo the usualtable top from the latter.
Fig. 3 is anend view of the shaper with the present attachment parts applied thereto.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged back side elevation of parts of theshaper, and the'present attachment parts applied thereto; a part of the shaper frame structure being brokenaway for better showing of the carriage and trackway. a
Fig.5 is a perspective view of the end portion of a wooden window sash rail, as formed with a tenon by use of the present devices.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the end portion of a sash rail as formed with a groove by use of the present devices.
Referring more in detail to the drawings- For better understanding of the present invention, I have, in Fig. 1, illustrated a type of shaper to which, after removal therefrom of the usual table top and cutter head, the present equipment may be readily applied to complete the present invention. The machine, as shown in Fig. 1, is complete as a shaper. It comprises a metal base frame structure In, of hollow housing form and on which a horizontal table top I2 is removably secured. To adapt the base for the purpose of mounting and'securing the table top, it is formed at its upper or top edge with laterally projecting flanges l3, as shown in Fig. 2, and these are formed with holes 14 through which the bolts which secure the table top in place may be applied. After removal of the table top from the base structure It), as has been indicated in Fig, 2, a saw-dust and chip collecting hood I5, for use as presently explained may be secured thereto by clips [6 and bolts l1. 1 p r The shaper also is equipped with a vertical, cutter head mounting shaft l8 that has a driving pulley wheel i9 fixed thereto. An electric motor 20 is adjustably mounted on the back wallof the frame ID, as illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4, and this i has a pulley wheel '22. fixed on its drive shaft 23. Abelt 24 operates about the'pulleys l9 and 22 in the usual Way to drive the shaft I8. The shaft 18 which in the present adaptation mounts the groove and tenon cutter heads, presently to be described, is rotatably mounted in a bearing 25, that is vertically adjustable in guideways 26-26, as shown in Fig. l, and vertical adjustment thereof is effected by means of a vertical screw threaded shaft 30 that is revolubly fixed at its lower end in a bracket 3| rigidly mounted on the front wall of the frame structure 10,- and threaded through a forwardly-projecting flange or lug 32 on the bearing 25. A hand wheel 33 is fixed to the lower end of the shaft 30 for itsrotation to effect vertical adjustment of the bearing in which the shaft miscarried. l
- The present equipment comprises. as its principal parts, a wheel supported carriage with a material holding clamp mounted thereon, and a track structure on which the carriage is mounted for reciprocal movement to carry. wooden pieces, asgclamped thereon, pastspecial cutters of cutter.
heads that are fixed on the motor driven shaft l 8.
In Figs. 2 and 3, it is shown that the cover plates of the bearing guideways 2626 have been removed and paired brackets 40-40 have been bolted to the front wall of the base frame structure ID to extend in parallel relationship directly forward therefrom.
In so attaching the brackets 40-40, the bolts and bolt holes provided for the securement of the cover plates for the guideways, 26-26 are used. The base portions 40:r40r of the brackets 4040 when secured in place by the bolts 4|, serve the purpose of the cover plates to hold the bearing 25 in place.
The brackets 4040 as thus secured, serve as" supports for two spaced and parallel rausnane 43 which, as presently explained provide a track that supports the carriage for its reciprocal travel. The rails are fixed in place by bolts 45 that extend upwardly through flanges of the brackets and are threadedinto the rails in the manner shown in Fig. 3. The rail 43 has a flat top surface but rail 42 has a longitudinal ridge formed thereon as seenin Figs. 2 and 3.
The carriage used in this combination com prises a horizontally disposed rectangular plate 50, supported at one end by means of two grooved rollers 52 that travelon the ridge shaped rail 42. At its other end, it is equipped with two rollers 53 that travel on the flat top surface of rail 43. The rails are .of; such length that the carriage can be moved in either direction thereon past the cutter head on shaft l8, as has been indicated in Fig. 2, and suitablemeans is provided to keep the rollers on the rails.
At: emeral hem-late 3- 5.0. has upstand n verticalfla-nge fixed thereto, and adjacent the flange ashelfor block 51, as best shown in Figs. 2 and 4,.-is d the n- The present use of the'combination of parts is for the formation of grooves and tenons on wooden, railsjtoj.;be;used for the making of window sash; some railsbeing formed at their opposite ends with ,tenons; as that designated at 60 on the rail-til; in Fig. Other rails are formed with grooves, asthat designated at 62 in the rail 63 in Fig. 6.
for the-purpose of; cutting such grooves and tenonfhall have applied a succession of cutter heads ;to th per end of the shaft 18, and have so ,arrangedgthem thereon that if it is desired, two sash rails can-be worked .on at the same time, to form one with a, tenon and the other with a groove. Thegwthree cutter heads herein employed are arranged in spaced relationship on the upper end of the shaft was; shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 4. The two upp.er, .cutter heads comprise the disks 65 and G6 which areof substantially the same diameter, andspaced apart as shown. Mounted in the peripheral portions of these disks are shaper cutters 51 and 68 as seen in Fig. 4. These two cutter heads are at such position on shaft l8 relative to the line ,of travel of the carriage, that when a Wooden rail, placed on the carriage in the position ofthat idesignated at in Fig. 4, is moved past the-cutter heads 65 and 66 the cutters thereon will operate tov cut material from the top and lowersides of the piece, thus to provide itwith a tenonvsuch as that shown at 60 on the piece-6,! ;in3Fig g5.
.,It. will "be here explained that the wooden piece, or ra il; 1:0 .for thisgparticular tenoning operation, isplaced flatly;.-upon the shelf 510i the carriage 4 and against the vertical flange 56, and i held securely in that position while the carriage is moved along the trackways to advance it past the cutter heads.
For the grooving of the end of a rail, in the manner illustrated in Fig. 6, I utilize the lowest of three assembled cutter heads. This head comprises a disk-like body 12 equipped at its periph- V cry with cutters [3; the disk bodybeing so disposed on the shaft it that it will operate on a piece or rail that has been properly placed on the carriage, flatly upon the base plate 50 thereof and against the vertical face of the shelf 51,
as is the piece 14 in Fig. 4.
The three cutter heads are equipped with spacing collars, as at 15, and the assembly of heads is normally locked on the shaft by a nut 16 that is threaded" onto the upper end of the shaft and tightened thereagainst. It will be understood that the wooden rails can be worked on indi-v vidually if such is desired, or they can be worked on simultaneously. vAlso, the cutter heads can be adapted for work on rails of different thickness by use of spacing collars of different length or thickness. Y I I In order to hold the rails secure, I have equipped the carriage with a clamp comprising a horizontally directed hand lever 80, fixed at one end by a pivot bolt 8| to -the upper end of a post 82 that is fixed vertically. to the forward edge of the carriage as best shown in Fig. 4. The lever extends in a horizontal direction across and beyond the rear edge of the carriage. Pivotedon the lever between its ends, as at 84, is a downwardly directed leg 85 with arcuate foot 86 adapted to engage with the rail to be worked on.
Downward pressure on the rear end of the lever 85) will operate to hold the engaged rail securely in position while advanced by the carriage against the cutter head. The position of attachment of the leg 85 to lever can be changed to meet requirements, that is, for holding a rail in the position of that designated at 10 in Fig. 4, or one in the position of thatdesignated at 14.
Assuming the device to beso constructed, and applied to the shaper in the manner shown, its usual mode of use is as follows: With the-carriage shifted to the position relative to the cutter heads as shown in Fig. 2, a wooden rail isplaced on the carriage base plate and against the vertical face of shelf 51, as is the rail 14 in Fig. 4. Then, if desired, another rail is placed on the shelf and flatly against theflange 56 as is the rail 10. Then, while'holding the rails in place, by hand or by means of the clamp, the carriage is advanced past the cutter heads. The two upper cutters will operate on the end of the higher rail to form the tenon thereon,'and the lower cutter will form a groove in the lower rail. The rails are then released and removed from the carriage and it is brought back to' starting position for re-loading. The operation is easy, and the'work onthe pieces accurately performed.
While the present device has been described as designed for operation on window sash pieces, it can readily be adapted for the making of pieces for other uses, and itiis not desired that it be restricted to this use. p
The presentinvention is characterized by the specific parts employed and their combination, and in adaptation of this trackway and carriage, with its provision for holding one or two pieces, to a common type of shaper.
Having thus described my invention, what :I
claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is-- 1. An attachment device for a wood work n machine of the shaper type which is characterized by a pedestal having a side wall thereof formed with paired vertical guideways, a bearing mounted for vertical adjustment in the guideways, removable cover plates normally applied over said guideways to retain the bearing therein, a driven shaft mounted in said bearing and cutter heads mounted on said shaft; said attachment device comprising a pair of brackets having base portions adapted to be secured over said guideways in lieu of said cover plates to retain the said bearing and having horizontal arms extended therefrom at the same level, a pair of rails mounted on said arms, a. table mounted on said rails for reciprocal travel past said cutter heads, and clamping means on said table for holdin pieces of work thereon for engagement by said cutter heads incident to the reciprocal movements of the carriage.
2. A machine as recited in claim 1 wherein the said clamping means comprises an abutment rail that is fixed to the bed of the carria along one side edge thereof, at a right angle to the direction of travel of the carriage and a post extended upwardly from the opposite side edge of the said bed, a lever pivoted at one end to the upper end of the post and having a handle' portion extended across and beyond said abutment rail, and a holding shoe pivoted on thelever between its ends and extended downweirdly therefrom to engage against work pieces as placed on the carriage.
3. A machine as recited in claim 1 wherein a hand screw is fixedly mounted for rotation on the pedestal and is threaded through a lug on the bracket mounting plate for the vertical adlustment of the hearing as a means of adjusting the working level of the cutter heads.
