Description
` MACHINEFOR CTTING RAInwAY-BARsQ 3f ,j j l specicaton of Letteren/cent No. 26,441, dated neeejnbr 1 j f To all 'whom it may concern." s j j l Be it known that I, BENJAMIN A,MAsoN,
of Newport, in the State of Rhode Island,
have invented a new and useful Machine for 5 Cutting the Ends of Railroad-Rails for Splicing Them by a Species of Lap-Joints;
and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification,
in whichl Figure 1 represents the two ends ofrails after having been cut to the form required to produce the intended splice; Fig.2, is a side elevation of the machine; Fig.` 3, a vertical section taken at the line A, a, of Fig. 2; and Fig. 4, a horizontal section taken at the line B, b, of Fig. 3. l( j The same letters indicate like parts in all the figures.
The object of my inventlon is to cut the ends of T rails for railroads so as to form the kind of lap joint represented in Fig. 1,
. andthe better to understand the` operation of my said invention I will describe the kind of lap `joint by which the rails `are to be united. But I wish it to be understood that this kind of lap joint for uniting the ends of the sections of rails is not of illy-invention.
I form one end of a section (A) of a T rail by cutting out one half of its thickness for a distance of about six inches from the end and about two thirds theydepth from the tread or upper surface to the' bottom `or the under face of the web, so that the recess formed will present a longitudinal vertical face (a) in the plane of the middle of the thickness of the rail. The extreme end of the rail will present a plane at right angles 40 to the longitudinal plane of the rail, and the inner end of the recess a vertical face (d) parallel withthe end. And the bottom of this recess will present a plane (bf) which longitudinally is parallel with the tread or upper surface of the rail, and transversely a plane at an inclination to the base so as to be lowest at its junction with the central vertical face (af) and inclining upward to the outer surface of the rail, sothat at the cross section this recess will present one half of what is known as a dovetail rabbet. At
` a distance of one half the length of this rea vertical plane (c) at right angles to the longitudinal plane of the rail, and the under "y ndgthe cross vertical` planexc() ,cut to., aljpla (5) the exact `reverse" lof the bef scribed plane j (6')-` sotliatjfthe cross(sect1A j of this projecting part-will presentonehalf of what is termed adovetail tenon."
\ Having thus cut oneend ofjamse Uioxiof rail I cut or form` the adjacent endfgof the next section the exactreverse thereoysoos j that the central` longitudinal! vertical plane` (a) of the onewill comein contactgwith the corresponding planegof `the other, (the 1 end of the projecting part` ofthe one again` j the cross vertical p ane (d) at theendnf` the recesspof` the other, the transverse j, clined under face orfplane `(bf) of the onto the inclinedbotto1n(b)` ofhtliereesfs of the other, andthe crossl verticalfplane f1 f (c) ofthe web` of `one` against theicorr" spondingplaneof the othensofthatwh put together the two` sectionstwill` pletely locked, and prevent each oth moving vertically orlaterallywi ,F y:
In the accompanying drawings 05,111). represent ways to wh'chfare fitteda suitabl l carriage (b) adapted to `receive andylhol f T rail, as it is termediby railroad enginee there being suitable clips"(c, c, c,fc)}`on` the.. carriage to extend'over the web ofJtheurail j to hold itdown to the surface ofthe carriage. This carriageismoved forward by a g screw shaft (d)be-low the ways,themthread of which acts on ai projection at the (bottom) l of the carriage. F The fend `of the Ascrewshaft` j has a cog wheel (e) which is turnedone cog at each rotation of the maindrivinglshaft (f) by a single spur on a wheel (g) on the said drivingshaft. `Or thefeedingmotion may be imparted by` any other suitableme` chanical means adapted to impartin'gfanixr termittent feeding motion at the endof each complete operation of the seriesofcutters to be presently described. f! j In the frame (h) beyond the w`ays (rt,fa) -1"`00` are mounted the stocks of four cutters(i`, j, Ic, Z) adapted to slide `in suitable` ways represented.` The stock of "the l cutterl (2)" has a connecting rod"` (m)` the uppenendjof "l s which embraces an eccentric" (11,)jbyswhich the cutter is operated to give a vertical r`e` ciprocating motion to cut into therail as.` it is presented by the feedingjmotion ofthe j j Q1 carriage, beoinning at theend and byag succession o cuts removing the metall to forma rabbet, and leave the vertical plane (df) Parana with the end fthe faire@ s to insure the removal of the chip from and,
give the required face to the plane (ri) of the rabbet. This cutter projects from its stock (o) which slides horizontally in suitable ways, the motion being imparted by an eccentric (p) as in the case of the cutter y a connecting rod (g). This Vcutter is formed with its lower horizontal edge to go down to the bottom of the rabbet in the rail,
its cutting edges corresponding with the vertical plane (a). And just as the cutter (j) is completing its cut, the third cutter (7c) begins to advance so as to complete its cut just after. The cutter (7c) projects from its stock (7') which slides in suitable ways at rightangles to the longitudinal axis of the rail and at an inclination with the base of the rail to correspond with and form the inclined bottom (b) of the recess in the rail.
Vrlhe stock of this cutter. is connected with and receives motion from an eccentric (s) in the like manner as the other cutters. And the fourth cutter (Z) which is mounted on a Y stock (t) like the cutter (k) and which receives motion in like manner from an ece rail. ThisY cut- Motion is imparted to the eccentrics for operating the Y three cutters (i, le, Z) by means of a pinion (o) on the main driving shaft which pinion engages the cogs of three wheels (fw, fw, w) one on each of the shafts of the said eccentrics.. And the required motion is imparted to the eccentric of the horizontal cutter by two bevel wheels (w, y) one on the main driving shaft and the other on the shaft of the eccentric. In this way a series of cutters and the successive cutting operation of each as the rail is presented and gradually advanced by the intermittent feed motion the ends of the sections of rails are formed in the manner described-to form a splice or lap joint the excellence oi which has been fully recognized but which has not gone into general use for the want of suit-able machinery for givin@ at little cost the required form to the ends of the sections of rails.
I do not wish to be understood as limiting my claim of invention to the mechanical arrangment for imparting motion to the several cutters or the carriage as other and equivalent means may be substituted.
)Vhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent for giving to rails the form substantially such as herein described, is- Y Y The combination of the series of cutters arranged in relation to each other substantially as described. j
