SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 264,407, dated September 12, 1882.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES P. GAGE, ot' Villisca, in the county of Montgomery and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and 'useful Improvements in VVashing-Machines;

and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.

The object of this invention is to construct a washing-machine by means of which the usual hand process of dipping the goods into the Water, rubbing them over a scrubbingboard, and squeezing out the water from the various articles can be accomplished by mechanical means in a rapid, effective, and easier manner.- These objects I attain by means of the devices illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved washing-machine. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central section on an enlarged scale.

The frame of this machine consists of aback, A, with the two side boards, B, secured to the back and braced by appropriate-cleats O. This structure, which is in the nature of a trough, is provided with legs D, hinged to its back and adapted to be spread out from the same, so as to rest upon the floor or other stand and support the machine in the inclined position shown in Fig. 1, it being understood that when the machine is in use and thus supported its lower end will rest. on the bottom of the wash-tub.

The scrubbing-board E, which can be ribbed or fluted upon one or both of its sides, is located between the sides of this trough or case and between its open front and back, and the said scrubbing-board is normally held parallel with the back of the case by means of springs F, arranged between the said back and the scrubbing-board.

The clothes to be washed are carried over the scrubbing-board and'between the latter and a longitudinal partition, G, by means ofa pair of endless cords, H, which are provided with strings or tapes I for tying around the clothes. These endless cords travel between the scrubbingboard and the partition, and also over the outer side of the latter at points adjacent to the sides of the case, pass around a grooved roller, K, at the bottom of the machine, and also over a fluted roller, L, located a short distance below the top of the case and somewhat above the upper end of the partition.

A second lower roller, M, is arranged between said partition and the upper roller, and both of these rollers are provided with annular grooves for the cords to run in. The upper roller is turned by means of a crank; N, and the lower roller is operated by endless cords or belts 0 from the upper roller.

In order to allow the scrubbing-board to yield and swing as the goods saturated with water are carried up over it by the endless cords, I connect or hinge the top end of the scrubbing-board at the upper end of .the case in any suitable way, and at the lower end of said board I provide the laterally-projecting pins P, which pass through and Work in slots Q formed in the sides of the case.

In operating this machine its lower end can be placed in the tub and its legs extended and rested upon the floor or other support. The operator will then tie the clothes or goods to be washed onto the endless. cords or bands, and then turn the crank, so as to cause the endless carriers to pass the clothes into the wabing-board. As the. articles reach the two rollers they will be successively compressed between the two rollers and the scrubbing board and then carried over the top roller, after which they can be subjected to the same operation as before as often as may be required. v

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is The combination, in a washing-machine, of scrubbing-board E, provided with pins P P, side boards, B B, having slots Q Q, springs F F, fluted rollers L M, crank N, endless cords H H, and roller K, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as set forth.
