2 Claims.

This invention reates to a combined curtainrod and carriers, and means for raising and lowering same in front of a window.

The primary object of the invention is to provide a combined curtain-rod and carriers for the ends of the rod and means for raising and lowering the rod and carriers while standing on the floor, thus obviating the necessity of standing on a chair, step-stool, ladder, or the like, when removing and/or hanging a curtain on the rod, as is now necessary in removing and hanging curtains on rods which are supported on brackets fixed to window frames.

A further object of the invention resides in providing a combined curtain-rod and carriers for the ends thereof that are movable up and down as a unit with the rod.

A further object of the invention resides in providing the ends of the rod with carriers integral therewith.

A further object of the invention resides in providing the ends of the rod with carriers having pull-cord receiving openings adjacent their upper edges and providing the window casing with eyelets through which the pull-cords pass and the carriers provided with the conventional bracket arms for detachably supporting the ends of the curtain-rods.

A further object of the invention is to utilize the pull-cord eyelets to serve as stops to limit upward movement of the curtain-rod by the carriers coming into contact with the eyelets.

A further object of the invention resides in providing the rod carriers with downwardly projecting leg portions to limit outward tilting movement of the rod by having sliding contact with the window casing when raising and lowering the curtain-rod and carriers as a unit.

A still further object of the invention resides in providing each rod carrier at its upper edge with a forwardly projecting flange having a cord receiving opening to facilitate a straight line pull on the cord when raising and lowering the curtain-rod and carriers therewith connected.

A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a combined curtain-rod and carriers, and means for raising and lowering same, that shall be simple and comparatively inexpensive in construction, sturdy, light in weight, and admirably adapted for the purpose intended Without any inconvenience to the user thereof.

The embodiments of the invention herein disclosed are merely illustrative, and may be modified and departed from in various ways without departing from the spirit and scope of the inven- 2 tion, as pointed out hereinafter, and limited solely by the appended claims.

To the attainment of the above stated objects and others which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the invention further resides in the novel features of construction, combination and association of parts, a practical embodiment of which is disclosed by the accompanying drawings.

Referring to the drawings:

Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a Window frame, showing the embodiment of my invention, the combined curtain rod andcarriers and a pair of curtains hung from the rod, all being shown in their raised position.

Fig. 2 is a front elevation of a, curtain frame, showing the embodiment of the invention, the combined curtain-rod and carriers and a pair of curtains hung therefrom, all being shown as lowered to a position to be removedvfrom the rod while standing on the floor, by merely allowing the weight of the rod, carriers and. curtains to descend under the control of pull-cords.

Fig. 3 is a fragmentary front elevation showing the combined curtain-rod and carriers in a lowered position in front of a window casing.

Briefly, the invention comprises a suitable sectional telescopically connected curtain-rod, carriers at the end of the rod, pull-cords attached to the carriers, and window casing supported eyelets through which the pull-cords pass for raising and lowering the combined curtain-rod and carriers by a person standing on the floor.

In one embodiment of the invention,'it will be noted, by reference to the drawings, that the rod of the combined curtain-rod and carriers therefor, as illustrated, is formed of sections, or elements I, 2 and 3 telescopically connected, as a unit. The

8, 2 and 3-are of channel shape, in cross-section, and their flanges i integral with the upper and lower edges thereof, are fiat, inclined and converge to reinforce and stiffen the rod elements. The rod elements, or sections i, 2 and 3 are all of the samegeneral shape and the sections I; and 2 have telescopic connection with section 3. a

Carriers 5, in one embodiment thereof in their cheapest and most simple form, as shown in Fig. 5, are integral with the outer ends of the rod elements l and 2 and project inwardly from the outer ends of the flanged rodelements toward each other, and, they are each provided with an opening i5, preferably, although not necessarily, midway the side edgesof the carriers and adjacent the top edge thereof The carriers 5, in the modified form shown in Fig: 6, are'lengthened to provide leg portions 7 which help to balance the rod when raising and lowering-the same with, or Without a pair of ourtains A hung therefrom, thus preventing the rod and carriers from swinging approximately 180 degrees downwardly when raising and lowering the combinedcurtain-rod and carriers with, or without a pair of curtains hung therefrom.

In the modification shown in Fig. 7, the opening 6 shown in Fig. 5, is eliminated and the carriers provided with a horizontal flange 8 projecting forwardly from the upper edge of the carrier and provided with an opening 9.

The modification shown in Fig. 8 is the same as the carrier shown in Fig. 7, excepting that it is provided with a leg 1, the same as in Fig. 6.

In the modification shown in Fig. 9, each carrier 5 is separable with the ends of the curtainrod elements I and 2 and is provided with a suitable forwardly projecting side arm lll, as is usual, with brackets fixed to a window frame H for telescopic connection with the ends of the rod elements I and 2, or each carrier 5 may be provided with a right angularly shaped pin l2, as illustrated in the modification shown in Fig. 12, to pass upwardly through the usual openings in the outer ends of well known curtain-rod elements now on the market.

It may here be stated that the arms III, or pins l2 which serve as connections for detachable connection with the ends of the

rod elements

1 and 2 may be of any conventional, or well known form, or design so as to fit the ends of any of the present well known makes of curtain-rods, whether of telescopic design, or not.

In the modification shown in Fig. 10, the carrier is lengthened, as in Fig. 6, to provide a leg portion 13 therefor.

In the modification shown in Fig. 11, the hole 6 shown in Figs. 9 and 10 is eliminated and the carrier 5 is provided with a horizontal flange 14 projecting forwardly from the upper edge there- 4 of and the flange is provided with an opening l5.

In the modification shown in Fig. 13, the carrier 5 is lengthened to provide a leg portion 16 below the pin 12, and the carrier 5 is provided with a horizontal flange I! projecting forwardly from the upper edge thereof, and the flange is provided with an opening Hi.

In order to raise and lower the curtain-rod, While standing on the floor, sitting in a chair, or the like, I employ a pair of screw, or other suitable eyelets I9 and 20 which are stationary and carried adjacent their respective upper corners of the window frame I l.

.Two pull-cords designated 21 and 22, each being secured, or attached at one end to its respective carrier 5 by passing through the opening 6, or if-the carrier is provided with a horizontal flange having the openings 15, or 18, passing through such openings. The pull-cord 2| passes through the eyelet l9 and then through the eyelet 29, while pull-cord 22 passes through the eyelet 20.

In the modification shown in Figs. 14 and 15, the pull-cords 2| and 22 act, or serve as the carriers for the rod elements I and 2. In this embodiment of the invention, the cords 2| and 22 are suitably connected to the rod elements I and 2 such, for instance as passing upwardly through openings 23 in the rod elements adjacent the outer ends thereof and the pull-cords pass through-the eyelets l9 and 20, as hereinbefore described. The outer ends/of the rod elements I and 2 in this embodiment of the invention are provided with suitable plug members 24 having their outer ends provided with a rubber, felt, or

equivalent head element 25 acting as a facing for contact with the window casing H, and is so arranged to prevent marring, or scratching the surfaces of the side members of the window casing H when the curtain-rod is raised and lowered.

It may here be stated that all of the carriers 5 may also be backed with a facing 25 of rubber, felt, or other soft material.

The two pull-cords 2i and 22 are connected by means of a suitable buckle like device 26, which is so positioned along the cords as to allow the combined curtain-rod and carriers to be lowered to the desired elevation in front of the Window so that curtains can be removed, or hung on the curtain-rod while standing on the floor, or even sitting in a chair. The buckle 26 will, when lowering the combined curtain-rod, come into contact with the eyelet 28, thereby preventing further downward movement of the combined curtain-rod. The buckle 26, as is clearly apparent, may be adjusted along the cords 2i and 22 to allow the desired drop of the curtain-rod.

A suitable supporting element 27 is secured to the window casing i! at the desired elevation to which the pull-cords may be anchored when the combined curtain-rod and carriers are in their uppermost position.

It wil1 be clearly apparent from Figs. 15, 17 and 18 that the eyelets serve also as stops to limit upward raising movement of the curtainrod. As shown in Fig. 15, the rod elements l and 2 contact the bottom faces of the eyelets i9 and 29, respectively, whereas in Fig. 1'7, the upper edge of the carrier 5 contacts the eyelets, and as shown in Fig. 18, the forwardly projecting flange having the cord opening will contact the eyelets.

Rods of two sections, or elements such as l and 2 are all that is necessary, or required for narrow windows, and in such instance elements I and 2 are telescopically connected. Rod element 3 is only required for windows of greater width than elements I and 2 will accommodate.

The many advantages of the invention Will readily suggest themselves to housewives, maids whose duty, occasionally is to take down and to hang clean curtains on curtain-rods, as well as to those skilled in the art to which the invention relates such, for instance as manufacturers of curtain-rods.

The invention is not limited to the structure shown, therefore it is to be understood that it may be embodied in specific forms other than those illustrated, as will occur to those skilled in the art, without departing from the principle or essential characteristics thereof, and the exclusive use of all such modifications shown and changes therefrom which come within the meaning and range of equivalency of the claims are therefore contemplated and intended to be included therein. The embodiments shown are therefore to be considered as merely illustrative and not restrictive, the scope of the invention being defined by the appended claims rather than the foregoing description and drawings.

What I claim is:

1. In a curtain-rod carrier, an elongated flat plate-like carrier member having a front face with parallel side edges and having parallel upper and lower edges adapted to assume 'a vertical position when suspended from a pull-cord, said member having a flange projecting forwardly from the upper edge thereof at a right angle to the front face of said member and having a pullcord receiving opening adjacent the front edge of the flange and midway the side edges thereof, and said member having a flat curtain-rod supporting arm projecting forwardly from the upper end portion of one of the side edges of the fiat plate-like carrier member and with its upper edge lying in a plane with the lower face of the aforesaid flange.

2. A curtain-rod carrier comprising an elongated fiat plate-like member of greater height than width having a front face with parallel side edges and having parallel upper and lower edges, the upper edge of the plate-like member terminating in a forwardly projecting horizontally disposed flange having an opening therethrough and the upper end portion of one of the side edges of the plate-like member terminating in an arm projecting forwardly beyond the front edge of the flange.
