Description

June 30, 1953 P. A. FASOLI LUMP BREAKER CONSTRUCTION Filed July 1, 1950 aii'orney/@eni Patented June 30, 1953 LUMP. BREAKER CONSTRUCTION Paul A. Fasoli, Hudson Falls, N. Y., assignor'to The Sandy Hill Iron & Brass Works, Hudson Falls, N. Y., a corporation of New York Application July 1, 1950, Serial No. 171,730
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to improvements in paper and pulp making machinery and is directed more particularly to lump breaking apparatus.
The principal objects of the invention are directed to a novel combination and arrangement of parts providing apparatus for breaking lumps in a wet paper web or the like.
The novel construction will, for purposes of disclosure, be described in connection with a suction roll but it will be understood that the same may be used with other elements of a paper machine or the like.
The apparatus of the invention is in the form of a unitary self-contained structure arranged and adapted for association and use with various units of a paper making machine or the like.
All of the above objects I accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement of parts thereof, as will fully appear by a perusal of the description below and by various specific features which will be hereinafter set forth,
To the above cited and other ends and with the foregoing and various other novel features and advantages and other objects of my invention as will become more readily apparent as the description proceeds, my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more particularly pointed in the claim hereunto annexed and more fully described and referred to in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein:
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of lump breaker apparatus shown in association with the side frames in which a suction roll is journalled;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the apparatus shown in Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional elevational view through the tensioning means of the apparatus shown in Fig. 1.
Referring now to the drawing more in detail, the invention will be fully described.
The upper portion of a side frame is represented by 2. There are two such side frames spaced apart and a suction roll 4 has opposite ends rotatable. The roll 4 is driven by any suitable means and has a foraminous surface 5 over which a wet web of paper passes. A breaker roll of this invention later to be described, is in engagement with said web for breaking lumps therein.
The apparatus associated with one frame 2 will be described. It will be understood that similar apparatus will be associated with each side frame 2.
An elongated bracket I5 is supported by and secured to the upper side of side frame 2. Any form of securing means may be employed such as a bolt or bolts l2. One end of the bracket I0 is forked to have spaced portions I 2'.
An elongated arm M has one end disposed between portions l2 of the bracket which is pivoted thereto at [4 providing a free end which is swingable up and down relative to the bracket Ill.
A bearing box I8 is fixed to the arm [4 and a bearing cap 29 pivoted thereto at 22 is provided. A clamp bolt 24 pivoted at 26 to the box is received in a forked end 28 of the cap. Said box and cap are formed to receive an end portion of a shaft 38 of a roll 32. A nut 34 on the upper threaded end of bolt 24 is provided for drawing the cap and box together.
It will be understood that the roll 32 has shafts at opposite ends journalled as described and that said roll bears on a web passing between it and roll 4. Said roll 32 may be driven or not, as may be desired.
The roll 32 is provided with a yieldable face 32 which may consist of various materials such as rubber, rubber compositions or the like. As the web passes between rolls 32 and 4, lumps therein are acted upon by said roll 32 to reduce or eliminate the same and said roll 32 functions with more or less pressure accordingly as the free ends of arms [4 are moved towards and away from the bracket therebelow secured to the frames.
The free end of arm I4 is forked or is provided with end plates 34 secured thereto in spaced relation by any suitable means such as bolts 36.
A cylinder such as 38 is provided which has an extension 40 between plates 34. Trunnions 42 on the extension 40 are journalled in the plates 34.
A piston or diaphragm 38' is disposed in the cylinder and a rod 44 extends into extension 40 in fixed engagement with a reciprocable stem 46 as by screw threads and a pin.
A collar 48 is disposed in the outer free forked end 50 of bracket I0 and has pivots 52 journalled therein. An adjusting screw 54 is in threaded engagement with said collar 48 and its upper end extends thereabove. The upper end of rod 54 carries a cup 56 in which is a bearing 58.
A reduced portion 46' of member 46 extends downwardly therefrom and its lower end is slidable in a bore 54' of screw 54.
A lower spring seat 60 around rod extension 46' is disposed on hearing 58 and an upper spring seat 62 is disposed around the rod portion 45', as
shown. A coil spring 64 is disposed between the spring seats and around rod extension 46'.
In operation roll 32 bears on a web passing over roll 4 according to the adjustment of screw rod 54.
With rod 54 screwed downwardly to its lower position the spring 64 will offer little or no resistance to downward movement or arm 14 whereby the full weight of the roll and arm are on the web.
By screwing screw 54 upwardly to act on the spring 64 the said spring through upper seat 62 lifts the extension 49 of the cylinder 38 and thereby the arm [4. member 54, the weight of the roll or the pressure thereof on the roll 4 may be varied as desired.
Often times it is desired to quickly relieve the web of the weight of the roll and this may be accomplished by means of the cylinder and its piston or diaphragm. To that end, a connection 10 may extend from the upper end of cylinder 38 and above the piston or diaphragm 38' therein to a pressure system, air line or the like. By admitting pressure to the cylinder it is elevated relative to its piston or diaphragm so that extension 40 elevates arm l4. Thus, the arm may be quickly elevated to lift roll 32 independently of the screw rod 54 and spring means.
It will be observed that the lump breaker construction may be easily and readily associated with paper making apparatus for operation of the breaker roll with roll of such apparatus and that the action of said breaker roll may be varied to provide the desired pressure while at the same time the said breaker roll may be rendered substantially inoperative to release pressure.
Means is provided for holding members l4 and roll 32 in an upper position away from a web on roll 4 when desired for an extended time period as is often desired and necessary.
The invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the essential characteristics thereof. Hence, the present embodiments are therefore to be considered in all respects merely as being illustrative and not as being restrictive, the scope of the invention being indicated by the appended claim rath- Therefore by adjusting the.
4 er than by the foregoing description, and all modifications and variations as fall within the meaning and purview and range of equivalency of the appended claim are therefore intended to be embraced therein.
What it is desired to claim and secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
Unitary lump breaker apparatus for securing to spaced side frames of a paper machine having a roll rotatable between said side frames comprising, elongated brackets for securing to said side frames in parallelism and having inner and outer ends, elongated arms disposed over and along said brackets having inner and outer ends, inner ends of said arms pivoted to inner ends of said brackets for movements of the outer ends of the arms up and down relative to the outer ends of the brackets, a lump breaking roll between said arms having end portions journalled therein adjacent the inner ends thereof for cooperating with the roll between said side frames, lower spring supporting means pivotally connected to outer ends of said brackets arranged for up and down movements relative thereto, cylinders pivotally connected to outer ends of said arms for pressure responsive pistons reciprocable in said cylinders, rod means for connection to pistons depending downwardly from said cylinders, arm supports below outer ends of said arms movable downwardly by said rod means and adapted to abut lower ends of said cylinders for moving said cylinders and arms upwardly, compression springs between said spring supporting means and arm supporting means, and lower ends of said rod means axially reciprocable in said spring supporting means for maintaining axial alignment of said spring supporting means and cylinders.
