PATEN. OFFI E DANIEL HUGH'EsfoF nocnnsfrnmnnw Yonne..
IMPROVEMENT IN Hoop-Locks@ To @ZZ Lohom t `may concern. n
Be it known that I, DANIEL'HUGHES, of
t Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented a newand Irnl proved HoopLock for `Securing to'ngether the `Ends of' Metal Hoops on Bales;` and I do hereby declare that the ,following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same,\reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of th-is specification, in which Figure l is a sect-ion of my invention, taken in the line x x, Fig. 3. Fig. 2 is a section of the case or box in order that the hoop may be snugly adjusted on the bale, and, when the ends of the hoop are slightly drawn back under the expansion of the compressed bale, cause the jaw to' `bind irmlyon the ends of the hoops, so that the latter will be firmly secured in the case or box, and `consequently locked or connected together.
The invention is more especiallydesigned to beapplied to thehoops of cottoirbales; but it may be appli'ed to all metal l bale-hoops.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it. t
A represents a case or box, which may be of cast metal `and of trilateral prismatic form, as shown clearly in Fig. 2. This case or box has a slot, a, made in two opposite `sides of it adjoining its inner side, b, said slots being of sufficient dimensions to allow" the ends c c of the hoop to pass freely through `the `box, one
end being lapped over the other,as shown f clearly in Fig. 2. l I i i Within the case or fbox A a clamp or jaw, B, is placed. This clamp or jaw is` simply a metal plate or bar having a journal, d, at each l side of it, which journals are tted in recesses e e in the inner surfaces of the ends of the case or box A, as shown clearly in Fig. 1. The inner edge of this clampor jaw is corrugated,
and it is somewhay eccent d d, one sideof the` clainlz n than the other,` asfshownlc ar l,
The device is applied asfollow any proper number being "used, aroundthe bale as usual and w is fully eompressedyo n i sired, the ends 'o oo -t ehoop through' the boxes A,`the`` hoe s b or drawnlsnugly around the al" n ure on the bale `is thenlrelaxe an it sion will draw the ends fgth outward in the direction nd rows, and this inoveinen wil or jaw `B to vbind onthe but the hoop, and bind both en i p the inner side, b, of fthebox,t e strong draw the greater the pressure ofthegcla jaw, which will'consequently;
ends of the hoop in the box y together. l I n it will be seenfroni the aboveldescr ti that a bale,jthe lhloops` of whichjhav he ends secured `by my.invention,` `may be o pressed andthe ends `of.` the hoops l, lwill be shoved along under the pressure v andsecured at the proper point `as soon a i the balcceases,it being undeistood. t
ends c c may be shovedg inthe direction n` cated by arrow2` without any resistan the clamp or jaw, fthe latter actingfonly the ends o are movedin the oppositedirect as indicated by `arrow 1L] The" edge of clamp or jaw Bis `inade slight order -to compensatefor any t position ot' theclanip orjaw W `or box, for if the edgewere co `variation in position mighty` .of the hoops to draw out from i i The clamps orfjawsfB arefpl `molds in which the cases" Ala the latter arecastaround th Having thus describedni i I claim as new,`and`desire o seci cub Le ters Patent, is-`-` l l The case or box n i h1 n opposite sides, and proyidedgwith jaw B, arranged si stan purpose set forth.,`
