This invention relates to a button fastening device.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a button fastening device wherein sewing is unnecessary for the attachment of the button to the garment and wherein the button can be easily and quickly removed from the clothing or garment prior to the time when it is cleaned or pressed and thereby to render cleaning and pressing of garments easier.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a button fastening device which is separable from the button by the release of the element which fastens the button to the garment material and wherein by removal of this element the element which passes through the button can be made free of the button and wherein only two devices will be. necessary for standard buttons as where the button has either four holes or where it has only two holes.
It is another object of the invention to provide in the fastening prong element or button fastening devices a simple catch for receiving such prongs and whereby the prongs will be forcibly held under the catch notches.
Other objects of the present invention are to provide a button fastening device which is of simple construction, inexpensive to manufacture, easy to apply to the button and to remove from the button, has a minimum number of parts, of pleasing appearance and efiicient in use.
For other objects and for a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the button attached to a piece of cloth.
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the button and of the fastening device taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a collective and perspective view of the parts of the fastening device shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the button prong f- Referring now particularly to Figs. 1, 2 and 3, I represents a four-hole button having holes I I therein. In order to effect the attachment of the button to a garment piece I2, a two-part fastening device of the present invention is used. This device comprises a top part I3 and a bottom part I4. The top part It has a circular plate I5 adapted to rest in top recess I6 upon its projections I? being extended through the respective holes II of the button. These projections Ii pass through the material I2 and their lower ends are presentable from the opposite side of the material iii. In the end of each projection ll is a hole I8 through which prong I9 and 200i a U-shaped member 2| may pass. The prongs I9 and extend respectively through pairs of projections. The part I4 comprises a plate 22 as well as the U-shaped member 2I and to which the U-shaped member is hinged by extension into upturned projections 23. At the opposite side of the plate 22 is a rolled boss 24 having respectively notches 26 at the opposite ends of the same for receiving respectively the prongs I9 and 20. The boss 2 is formed by rolling up the end of the plate and the projections 23 are provided by turning up portions of the plate 22. By expanding the prongs I9 and 20 slightly under the pressure of the same being brought down over the boss 2% they will be directed to the notches 26 and in this manner the upper part I3 and the button IE] will be held against displacement from the garment and the projections I! will be prevented from being removed or from sliding through the garment material I2.
To release the device, the prongs I9 and 20 are slightly spread to be dislodged from the notches 26 and when pulled from the openings I8 of the projections Ii of the part I3, the part I3 and the button can be removed and the button finally separated from the fastening device.
Referring now particularly to Figs. 4 and 5, there is shown a modified form of the invention wherein the bottom part is slightly diiferent from the bottom part I4. The same top part I3 is used, however. According to this form of the invention the bottom part, as indicated generally at 28, is cast or molded and has at one side an upstanding boss 29 in which is pivoted U- shaped member 30 having prong 3| and 32 which pass through the holes I3 of the projections ll of the top part is. At the opposite side of the part 28 is a boss 33 which has at its opposite sides notches 34 and 35 for receiving respectively the prongs 3| and 32. The manner of using this part 28 i the same as in which the part [4 is used. This form is used for four-hole buttons the same as is the previous form.
In Fig. 6 there is shown a still further form of the invention wherein the fastening device is adapted for use with two-hole buttons. According to this form of the invention, there i provided an upper part 4| having a top plate 42 and depending projections 43 having respectively holes 44 therein. A bottom part 45 comprises a plate 46 which ha an upwardly struck projection 4'! in which a prong member 48 is hinged. This prong member has a bent portion 49 adapted to engage with a projection 5| upon the prong mem ber 48 being brought to its closed position and its end under projection 52 and in notch 53 thereof. The method of using this fastening device shown in Fig. 6 is the same as that above described. The projections 43 of the part 4| are extended through a two-hole button and through the garment piece. Thereafter the prong member 48 of the part 45 is extended through the holes 44 of the projections 43 and brought to a position where its end enters the notch 53. By the bent end 49 engaging with the retaining projection 5| the prong member 48 is kept well within the notch 53 and in a laterally shifted position and locked against lateral displacement out of the notch 53. The prong member 48 can be bent slightly, however, when it is desired to disengage the parts so as to free it of the notch 53 and while the bent end 49 is being lifted from the struck projection 5|.
It will be apparent that there has been provided fastening devices for buttons which are easy to use and wherein the button can be quickly and readily applied or disengaged from the garment. It will be further apparent that the device is particularly adapted for use with standard buttons and fits well within the recess on the top 40 of such buttons and without consuming space.
The fastening devices can be easily operated and detached from the garment.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
A button fastening device comprising an upper part having depending prong projections laterally spaced from each other with an opening in each end thereof; a bottom part comprising a plate having an upwardly-extending boss with an aperture therein, a pronged member bent at one end into J-shape and pivotally connected to said boss within the aperture thereof, said prong member adapted to enter the openings in the projections of the upper part, laterally-extending notch means on said plate opposite to the up wardly-extending boss for receiving the longer end of the pronged member, said plate having a lateral stop projection adjacent to and parallel to said upwardly extending boss to engage the shorter end of the pronged member when the prong member is in place and to prevent its outward lateral displacement from the notch means.
