Description

PETER M. BROWN, OF CARROLLTON, ILLINOIS.
PORTABLE FENCE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 26,413, dated December 13, 1859.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER M. BROWN, of Carrollton, in the county of Greene and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Portable Fence; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, maklng a part of this specification.
Figure l, is a side view of one entire section of my improved fence, represented as combined with a post and with a portion of another section of the fence. Fig. 2, is an end view of said fence; and Figs. 3 and 4, represent a modified form of a post which may be used for supporting the sections of my improved fence.
Similar letters indicate like parts in each of the drawings. i
Each section of my improved fence is composed of a double series of oppositely inclined board-strips a a and b, b', which are united to each other by means of a suitable number of pins g, g, in such a manner that the said section can be lengthened or shortened at pleasure; the said section diminishing in height as its length is increased, and vice versa. The manner of connecting the respective parts of the sections of my improved fence, also enables them to be condensed into an exceedingly compact form for the purpose of facilitating their removal from place to place.
The foremost strips a and b', of each of the series of inclined strips which compose a `section of my improved fence, is a little shorter than the others, and is notchedas shown in the drawings-for the purpose of enabling the sections to be more conveniently combined with their supporting posts and with the transverse base supporters d, d, of said posts.
The postsc, which I employ for uniting and sustaining the respective sections of my improved fence, have two mortises formed in each of them; which mortises are of such a length and breadth that the lower mortise in each post will receive the united lower ends of the outermost strip of each `of two united sections, while the upper mortise in said post, receives the upper ends of` the outermost strip of each `of the oppositely inclining series of strips in said` sections. l
A transverse recess 72 at the lower end of f 55` each fence post, receives a base-supporting plank d, which is held in its place by means of the notch in the lower end of the sectione, e, in their sides instead` of mortises, which recesses may becovered by ahinged strip f, that may be secured by a key or pin at its lower end. The fence-posts may, or may not have pointed ends descending below` their respective base-supporters d, d.
I am aware thatthe principle of conhe posts employed, fol` mtg s structing gates and the sections of fences, of
a double series of `oppositelyinclining connected slats, is notnew, and therefore to secure by Letters Patent,
` 75 What I claim asmy invention and desire p Giving such a shape to the slats at each i end of the sections ofmy improved fence,
that the said sectionscan `be securely inter` locked with each other, by means of supporting posts `of the within describedshape, in such a manner thatthe said sections can be either lenothened or shortened, when they are put up or use, substantially as herein set forth. l
The above specification of my improved portable fence signed and witnessed this 31st day of October '1859. l
PETER M. BROWN.
