This invention relates to door post constructionfor railway box cars and has for its rimary purpose to provide a post adapted to serve the combined functions of post, lading. strap anchor, and as a receptacle for: load partitioning elements or braces which may be disposed across the car or across the doorways.
The principal object of the invention is the provision of a box car door post formed froma commercial rolled. member or pressed from a plate and shaped to provide. one or more vertically extending channel shaped grooves for the reception of removable partitioning elements, and having slotted openings at vertically spaced intervals for the attachment of lading straps The invention has for one of its objects the provision of a door post having a plurality of vertical channels for receiving load partitioning. and bracing elements at right angles with a common opening for entering the elements into either of the channels or removing them therefrom, located at a point remote from the zone of the normalv operative positions of the partitioning elements.
Another object of the invention is to provide a door post having lading strap anchor openings at intervals and a continuous vertical channel for receiving load partitioning members, and so disposedand arranged in relation to the inside lining of a railway box car as to provide another channel for. receiving partitioning elements at right angles to the first suchmembers.
The foregoing and other and. more specific objects of the invention are attained by the arrangement illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure l is a fragmentary cross sectional view of a railway box car taken through a doorway in one side wallof said railway box car and showing the door post arrangement involving. a pressed plate formed to provide the load brace receiving. channel. and. ultili'zing a separate member securedto the post member for the. attachment of. lading straps through slots provided therein and affording load brace and partition receiving channels at right angles to each other;

Figure 7 is a plan sectional view of a railway box car showing the partition panels extending acros the doorways and across the width of the car and showing the lading straps extending across the doorways and across the width of the car,- the partition panels and the lading straps being held by the type or door post shown in Figures 4, 5, and. 6.
The invention proposes to provide a door post construction for box cars adapted to aiford convenient lading. strap anchorage for straps extending either across the car or across the doorways, and contemplates the provision of open channel ways in the respective posts disposed in confronting relation acrossthe doorways or across the car or both, and designed to receive removable partitioning or load bracing elements which, when in place, enable theutilizationof so-called bin type loading methods, less than'car load shipments partitioned from other lading, or to brace the lading at the doorways to prevent interference with the operation of the sliding; side doors. The invention may take any of several forms. The structures illustrated in Figures 1 through 7- provide channelsa at right angles for the reception of load partitioning or bracing elements disposed either across the car from side to side, or across the doorways, or both and include lading strap anchor provisions.
In the drawings, Ill represents a railway box car having a side sill including sub-sill [2, a side plate l3 and side wall sheathing M. A roof structure I5 is supported on the inwardly extending upper flange of the side plate, and the wooden floor It or the car is supported upon the inwardly extending flange of the side sill ll. The sub-sill |2 extends in the area of and beyond opposite sides of door opening I! to brace the side wall structure in this area. Inside lining I8 is secured to nailing member 19 at the door post positions, and this member in turn is secured to the door post by means of bolt 20. A finish strip or element 2|, at the inside, protects the edge of the lining and is disposed between the lining and the doorpost and secured to the nailing member. The wooden floor is protected at the side edges in the area of the door openings by metallic threshold member 22.
In Figures 1, 2:, and 3, the door post 44 is fabricated from a plate member and is supplemented by a separately attached member which, in combination with the pressed plate, affords a cross sectional shape having trackways at right angles to accommodate removable panel boards, extending either across the width of the car or across the doorways. The post section includes wide outer flange 45 inwardly directed flange 4B which is offset in a direction away from the door opening at 41, then extends inwardly at 48, thence returns at 48 in a direction parallel to the offset 41 to the original plane of the flange 4B and terminates in an inwardly directed flange 50. The bolt 20 passes through the flange portion 45 to secure the nailing strip I9. The offset portion of the door post affords a channel-shaped trackway open on the side toward the doorway, and with such tracks at opposite sides of the door opening, is adapted to receive removable panels 5| extending across the doorway to brace the lading against any possible interference with the operation of the sliding doors used on cars of this type. The panels 5| are of a length extending substantially continuously between the webs 48 of opposing tracks and are comprised of a plurality of units of the desired width, which may be inserted individually into the guideways to build the barrier thus provided across the doorway to the height necessary as required by the particular type of lading. The panels 5| are guided between the portions 4'! and 49 of the tracks as they are lowered therein from the top, and are confined therebetween against displacement. The portions 49 and 50 of the post are coped out at the top as at 52, as best shown in Fig. 1, to provide an opening in the respective trackways for the insertion of-the panel members into the tracks. The coped-out portion is of suflicient depth to accommodate panel members 5| of the width desired.
A separate punched plate member or element 53 is secured to the post section to provide a second channel-shaped guideway for receiving panel members disposed at right angles to the panel members 5| across the width of the car between posts at opposite sides thereof. The separate plate is disposed parallel to the flange 5B and is integrally secured to the back of the web 48 by welding 54, as best shown in Figs. 2 and 3, whereby with return portion or base 49 and the flange 50 to provide a channelshaped track, open in the direction of the width of the car in order to receive panel members 55 extending across the car continuously between such trackways at respectively opposite sides of the car. The panel members 55 are similar to the members 5| except for length, and are inserted into the guideways in the same manner, by mean of the coped-out openings 52 at the top of the post sections. The portion 49 of the post section comprises a dividing wall between the two guideways, and it will be seen that with this removed, together with the flange 50, it is possible to insert the panel members into either of the guideways without inter-l ference. The plate 53 is provided with vertically spaced slots 55 affording 'lading strap anchorage, which may. be extended across the doorways H or across the car, as required.
The door post construction illustrated in Figs. 4, 5 and 6 also provides for load partitioning and bracing panels at right angles, but utilizes the fabricated metal door post in association with the inside lining and nailing members to provide one of the channel ways for the panels. The post 51, as shown, is pressed from a plate and includes an outer flange 58 parallel to the side wall and to which the side sheathing i4 is secured by riveting. The inwardly directed flange 59 is ofiset at E0 in a direction away from the door opening and then extends inwardly at 8| and returns at B2 to the original plane of the flange 59, where it terminates in an inwardly directed flange 63. The flange 63 is notched on its inner edge at intervals, as indicated at 54 and a member 65, which as shown comprises a round, extends along the inner edge continuously throughout the height of the flange and is integrally united therewith by welding 66 which extends continuously between the notches. The notches 64 are thus converted to openings for the passage of lading straps, which may be anchored to the edge member 65 and stretched either across the doorway or across the car. The channel-shaped guideway defined by the offset 6|) and the return portion 62, in combination with similar provisions at the opposite side of the doorway, forms aligned tracks for receiving removable panel members 61 shown in Figures 5, 6, and 7, which are inserted into the tracks at the top and lowered therein. The panels are comprised of individual units which may be inserted into the track, one on top of the other, to provide a barrier across the doorway of any height desired. The panels are inserted into the trackways through. openings 68 provided at the top of the door posts by coping out the flange 63 and the portion 62 back to the web 6| for a depth sufiicient to accommodate panels of the width desired, all as best shown in Fig. 4. The return portion 62 of the post forms the base of a second guideway at right angles to the first, and the inner flange 63 with the edge member 65 forms one side of the channel. The other side of the channel-shaped guideway is formed by the inside lining finish strip 2| secured to the nailing member I9, which in turn is secured to the web 6| of the post by bolt 2|]. A space is thus provided between the flange edge member 65 and the lining member 2| for the reception of panel members 69 shown in Figures 5, 6, and 7, extending across the car between door postsat opposite sides of the ear,- and which are inserted into this trackway from the top by means of the same coped-out openings at in the metal post portions as are utilized in the assembly of the panels 61 in the door opening. Thus, load partitioning or bracing members may be applied either across the car at one or both sides of the doorway, or across the, respective doorways, or any combination of these applications as adapted to the particular lading being handled. A plurality of lading straps it are shown in Figure 7 and these lading straps extend across the car and across the doorways. The ends of the lading straps iii are passed around the members 65 on the posts 51 and are placed upon the body portion of their respective lading strap and secured to the body portion by clips H.
Both forms of the invention provide door posts adapted to the application of lading straps which may be extended either across the car or across the respective doorways to secure the lading, and having guideways for removable panels which may be assembled therein to provide load braces or partitions of any height desired, extending either across the car or across the doorways or both. These barriers, extended across the car, serve to brace the lading or act as, partitions, permitting the handling of less than carload shipments in the same car for. different destinations, and when disposed across the door openings act to brace the lading against shifting and possible interference with the normal operation of the sliding doors, and when used in either place, permits so-called bin type loading of package or bulk lading.
What is claimed is:
l. A load brace arrangement for a railway box oar having a door opening in respectively opposite sides comprising pairs of posts located respectively at opposite sides of each or said door openings and all extending substantially full height of the car sides, each of said posts having a flange parallel to an adjacent side wall of the car and a flange at an angle to the firstnamed flange, said last-named flange or" each post having an offset defining an open channel-shaped vertically disposed track-way intermediate the width or the flange and in opposed relation at opposite sides of the respective door openings for the reception of removable partition panels and each having a terminal flange at right angles to the tracicways, a separate member defining in cooperation with said offpost having an offset defining an open channel-shaped vertically disposed trackway on each post at right angles to the first-named trackway and in opposed relation at opposite sides of the car upon each side of the door openings for the reception of removable partition panels, and an opening in one side of said first-named trackway and the terminal flange on at least one post on each side of the car for insertion of said partition panels into said trackways to form partitions across the respective door openings or across the width of the car at each side of the door openings and thereby brace lading within said car.
2. A load brace arrangement for a railway box car having a door opening in respectively opposite sides comprising pairs of posts located respectively at opposite sides of each of said door openings and all extending substantially full height of the car sides, each of said posts having a flange parallel to anadjacent side wall "of the car and a flange at anangle to the first-named flange, said last-named flange of each post having an oflset defining an open channel-shaped vertically disposed trackway intermediate the width of the flange and in op.- posed relation at opposite sides of the respective door openings for the reception of removable partition panels and each having, a terminal flange at right angles to the trackways, a separate member defining in cooperation with said offset and the terminal flange a second open channel-shaped vertically disposed trackway on each post at right angles to the first-named trackway and in opposed relation at opposite sides of the car upon each side of the door open- P vertically spaced openings in one of said flanges on each post for the attachment Oflading straps adapted to be stretched between posts across the door openings or between posts across the width of the car at each side of the door openings thereby to reinforce. said partitions form.- ing panels.
3. A load, brace arrangement for; a railway box car having a door opening in respectively opposite sides comprising pairs of posts located respectively at opposite sides of each of said door openings and all extendingsubstantially full height of the car sides, each of said posts having a flange parallel to an adjacent side wall of the car and a flange at an angle to' the firstnamed flange, said last-named. flange of each post having an offset defining an open channelshaped vertically disposed trackway intermediate. the width of the flange and inv opposed relation at opposite sides of the respective door openings for the reception of removable partltion panels and each having a terminal flange at right. angles to the-trackways, a spaced flange parallel to said terminal flange defining with said offset and the terminal. flange a second open channel-shaped vertically disposed track..- way on each post at right angles to the firstnamed trackway and in opposed relation at opposite sides of the car upon each side of the door openings for the reception of removable partition panels, and an opening in one side of said first-named trackway and the terminal flange on at least one post on each sideof the car for insertion of said partition panels into said trackways to form partitions across the respective door openings or across the, width of the car at each side of the door openings; and
thereby brace lading within said. car.
4. A load brace arrangement for a railway box car having a door opening in respectively opposite sides comprising pairs of posts located respectively at opposite sides of each of said door openings and all extending substantially full height of the car sides, each of said posts having a flange parallel to an adjacent side wall of the. car. and a flange at an angle to the firstnamed flange, said last-named flange of each post having an offset defining an open channelshaped vertically disposed trackway intermediate the width of the flange and in opposed relation at opposite sides of the respective door openings for the reception of removable partition panels and each having a terminal flange at right angles to the trackways, a spaced flange parallel to said terminal flange defining with said offset and the terminal flange a second open channel-shaped vertically disposed trackway on each post at right angles to the first-named trackway and in opposed relation at opposite sides of the car upon each side of the door openings for the reception of removable partition panels, an opening in one side of said first-named trackway and the terminal flange on at least one post on each side of the car for insertion of said partition panels into said trackways to form partitions across the respective door openings or across the width of the car at each side of the door openings and thereby brace lading within car, and a plurality of vertically spaced openings in one of said flanges on each post for the attachment of lading straps adapted to be stretched between posts across the door openings or between posts across the width of the car at each side of the door openings thereby to reinforce said partition forming panels.
5. A railway box car door post comprising a first flange fabricated of metal, a second flange fabricated of metal positioned at an angle to said first flange and secured thereto, said second flange having an offset providing a first trackway adapted to receive a partition panel, a third flange fabricated of metal secured to said second flange, and a member secured to said second flange and defining with a portion of said offset and said third flange a second trackway adapted to receive a partition panel.
6. A railway box car door post comprising a first flange fabricated of metal, a second flange fabricated of metal positioned at an angle to said first flange and secured thereto, said second flange having an offset providing a first trackway adapted to receive a partition panel, a third flange fabricated of metal secured to said second flange, and a member secured to said second flange and defining with a portion of said offset and said third flange a second trackway adapted to receive a partition panel, said member being provided with at least one opening therein adapted for the attachment of a lading strap.
7. A railway box car door post comprising a first flange fabricated of metal, a second flange fabricated of metal positioned at an angle to said first flange and secured thereto, said second flange having an ofiset providing a first trackway adapted to receive a partition panel, a third flange fabricated of metal positioned in aligned relation with respect to said second flange and secured thereto, and a member positioned in spaced parallel relation with respect to said third flange and secured to said offset to define with a portion of said offset and said third flange a second trackway at right angles to said first trackway adapted to receive a partition panel.
8. A railway box car door post comprising a first flange fabricated of metal, a second flange fabricated of metal positioned at an angle to said first flange and secured thereto, said second flange having an offset providing a first trackway adapted to receive a partition panel, a third flange fabricated of metal positioned in aligned relation with respect to said second flange and secured thereto, and a member positioned in spaced parallel relation with respect to said third flange and secured to said offset to define with a portion of said offset and said third flange a second trackway at right angles to said first trackway adapted to receive a partition panel, said member being provided with at least one opening therein adapted for the attachment of a lading strap.
9. In a railway box car having a pair of side walls and one of said pair of side walls having a door opening and the other of said pair of side walls having a door opening opposite the first named door opening, a first post positioned at one side of the first named door opening and secured to said one of said pair of side walls, a second post positioned at the other side of the first named door opening and secured to said one of said pair of side walls, a third post positioned at one side of the second named door opening and secured to said other of said pair of side walls, a first partition panel extending between said first post and said second post and in slidable engagement with said first post and said second post, and a second partition panel extending between said first post and said third post and in slidable engagement with said first post and said third post.
10. In a railway box car having a pair of side walls and one of said pair of side walls having a door opening and the other of said pair of side walls having a door opening opposite the first named door opening, a first post positioned at one side of the first named door opening and secured to said one of said pair of side walls, a second post positioned at the other side of the first named door opening and secured to said one of said pair of side walls, a third post positioned at one side of the second named door opening and secured to said other of said pair of side walls, a first partition panel extending between said first post and said second post and in slidable engagement with said first post and said second post, a first lading strap extending between said first post and said second post and adapted to assist said first partition panel in holding lading, a second partition panel extending between said first post and said third post and in slidable engagement with said first post and said third post, and a second lading strap extending between said first post and said third post and adapted to assist said second partition panel in holding lading.
11. In a railway box car having a pair of side walls and one of said pair of side walls having a door opening and the other of said pair of side walls having a door opening adjacent the first named door opening, a first pair of posts positioned at the sides of the first named door opening and secured to said one of said pair of side walls and the confronting faces of said first pair of posts being provided with tracks, a first partition panel extending between said first pair of posts and slidably engaging said tracks and adapted for vertical sliding movement relative to said tracks, a second pair of posts positioned at the sides of the second named door opening and secured to said other of said pair of side walls and the confronting faces of said second pair of posts being provided with tracks, a second partition panel extending between said second pair of posts and slidably engaging the second named tracks and adapted for vertical sliding movement relative to the second named tracks, one of said first pair of posts bein arranged in confronting relation with the adjacent one of said second pair of posts and the confronting faces of said one of said first pair of posts and said one of said second pair of posts being provided with tracks, a third partition panel extending between said one of said first pair of posts and said one of said second pair of posts and slidably engaging the third named tracks and adapted for vertical sliding movement relative to the third named tracks, the other of said first pair of posts being arranged in confronting relation with the other of said second pair of posts and the confronting faces of said other of said first pair of posts and said other of said second pair of posts being provided with tracks, and a fourth partition panel extending between said other of said first pair of posts and said other of said second pair of posts and slidably engaging the fourth named tracks and adapted for vertical sliding movement relative to the fourth named tracks.
12. In a railway box car having a pair of side walls and one of said pair of side walls having a door opening and the other of said pair of side Walls having a door opening opposite the first named door opening, a first pair of posts positioned at the sides of the first named door opening and secured to said one of said pair of side walls and the confronting faces of said first pair of posts being provided with tracks, a first partition panel extending between said first pair of posts and slidably engaging said tracks and adapted for vertical sliding movement relative to said tracks, a second pair of posts positioned at the sides of the second named door opening and secured to said other of said pair of side walls and the confronting faces of said second pair of posts being provided with tracks, a second partition panel extending between said second pair of posts and slidably engaging the second named tracks and adapted for vertical sliding movement relative to the second named tracks, one of said first pair of posts being arranged in confronting relation with the adjacent one of said second pair of posts and the confronting faces of said one of said first pair of posts and said one of said second pair of posts together with the adjacent portion of the adjacent side wall forming tracks, a third partition panel extending between said one of said first pair of posts and said one of said second pair of posts and slidably engaging the third named tracks and adapted for vertical sliding movement relative to the third named tracks, the other of said first pair of posts being arranged in confronting relation with the other of said second pair of posts and the confronting faces of said other of said first pair of posts and said other of said second pair of posts together with the adjacent portion of the adjacent side wall forming tracks, and a fourth partition panel ex tending between said other of said first pair of posts and said other of said second pair of posts and slidably engaging the fourth named tracks and adapted for vertical sliding movement relative to the fourth named tracks.
13. In a railway box car including a wall having a door opening and a door post at one edge of the opening, the door post comprising a first flange and a second flange positioned at an angle with the first flange and secured thereto, said second flange being provided with a first track adapted for engagement with a partition panel, a third flange secured to said second flange, and an element spaced from said third flange of the door post and secured to the wall, said third flange and a portion of said second flange defining one side and the base respectively and said element defining the other side of a second track adapted for engagement with a partition panel.
14. In a railway box car including a wall having a door opening and a door post at one edge of the door opening, the door post comprising a first flange and a second flange positioned at an angle with said first flange and secured thereto, said second flange being provided with a first trackway adapted to receive a partition panel, a third flange secured to the second flange, and an element spaced from said third flange and secured to the wall, said third flange and a portion of said second flange defining one side and the bottom respectively and said element defining the other side of a second trackway adapted to receive a partition panel.
15. In a railway box car wall having a door opening and a door post at one edge of the door opening, the door post comprising a first flange and a second flange positioned at right angles to the first flange and secured thereto, said second flange having an oiiset providing a first trackway adapted to receive a partition panel, a third flange positioned in aligned relation with said second flange and secured to said offset, and an element spaced from'the third flange of the door post and secured to the wall, said third flange and a portion of said ofiset defining one side and the bottom respectively and said element defining the other side of a second trackway adapted to receive a partition panel.
16. In a railway box car wall having a door opening and a door post at one edge of the door opening, the door post comprising a first flange and a second flange positioned at an angle with the first flange and secured thereto, said second flange being provided with a first trackway adapted to receive a partition panel, a third flange secured to said second flange, said third flange being provided with at least one opening therein adapted for the attachment of a lading strap, and an element spaced from said third flange and secured to the wall, said third flange and a portion of said second flange defining one side and the bottom respectively and said element defining the other side of a second trackway adapted to receive a partition panel.
17. In a railway box car wall having a door opening and a door post at one edge of the door opening, the door post comprising a first flange and a second flange positioned at right angles with the first flange and secured thereto, said second flange having an offset providing a first trackway adapted to receive a partition panel, a third flange positioned in aligned relation with the second flange and secured to said offset, said third flange being provided with at least one opening therein adapted for the attachment of a lading strap, and an element spaced from the third flange and secured to the wall, said third flange and a portion of said offset defining one side and the bottom respectively and said element defining the other side of a second trackway adapted to receive a partition panel.
