2 Claims. (Cl. 131*172) This invention relates to an improved pipe seasoner and rejuvenator which is adapted to break in new smokers pipes or rebuild a smoker's pipe that has become fouled with use.
An object of the invention is to provide a device that is extremely efficient in its operation and will break in or rebuild apipe slowly to prevent overheating or burning of the pipe.
Another object of the inventionis-to provide a device that will break ina pipe in the same manner as is accomplished naturally by the smoker and being provided with an absorbent filter will rebuild and season an old pipe to its former condition.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view the invention consists of the novel details of constructional arrangement and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of an embodiment of the invention with certain parts in elevation;
Figure 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-2 of Figure 1 with certain parts removed;
Figure 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a sectional view on the line 4-4 of Figure l with the rubber tube removed;
Figure 5 is a detailed sectional view in opposite position to that shown in Figure 3;
Figure 6 is a sectional view on the line 6-6 of Figure 5;
Figure 7 is a sectional view on the line I--'! of Figure l and Figure 8 is a sectional view on the line 8-8 of Figure 1.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, the reference numeral I9 designates a base member having a forward portion l2 formed with an indentation I4 which is adapted to receive the bowl I6 of the pipe 18. The deepest portion of the indentation I4 is near the extreme forward end of the base member ID so that the stem 28 of the pipe I8 extends angularly above the top surface of the intermediate portion 22 of the base member II]. A vertical rectangular bore 24 is formed in and depends from the top of the portion I2 and a complementary shaped bar 26 has frictional engagement with said bore and is provided on the top thereof with the supporting hanger 28 pivoted thereto :by the screw 38. The bar 26 may be moved upwardly or downwardly to elevate or lower the stem 28 of the pipe I8.
The portion 22 is continued upwardly to form the rear portion 32, and a partition 34 is secured at 38 to the bottom surface of the portion 22 and 2 also as at '38 to' the rear wall of the base member III; The rear wall has a partition 42 "positioned substantiallyat right angles thereto, the
Concentric with the rod 92, apertures 96 are provided in the partition 34 and are adapted to be completely covered by a disc valve 98 secured to the rod 92 and an expansion spring I89 on the rod 92 intermediate the partition 34 and shaft 84 urges the disc valve closed, when the cam 80 is in the position shown in Figure 3.
The portion 32 is provided with a tube-like portion I82 for connection to the stem 29 by the flexible tube I94 and the base is provided with inturned legs I36 for mounting the rubber feet I08. The partition 52 is provided with openings I09, and the bracket 52 is provided with openings I I0, and a switch I I2 on the base controls the operation of the electric motor 62.
During operation of the device, the pipe I8 is positioned in the indentation I4 with the stem thereof extending rearwardly and supported by the bracket 28 which is moved upward to the requisite level to properly position the stem 29 with respect to the flexible tube I04. The motor 52 is energized by the switch I I2 and the fan 10 will be caused to rotate to draw smoke through the openings I09 in the partition 42 and through the apertures 9B in the partition 34 to pass into the bracket 52 and then outwardly of the openings l l in the bracket 52 to be discharged through the opening in the base l0. As the shaft 66 rotates, the apertures 96 will be opened and closed by movement of the valve 98 actuated by the cam 80 and gear 14. Therefore, during the interval that the cam is in the position shown in Figure 5, the smoke will be drawn from the pipe I8 through the openings 96 as previously described, but when the cam is in the position shown in Figure 3, smoke cannot be drawn in by the fan. Thus, the pipe is prevented from becoming hot enough to burn and the actual manual smoking technique will be duplicated in a mechanical way. Y
Since it is a well known fact that tar, nicotine, saliva and tobacco residue collect in the bowl of the pipe after continually smoking, a pipe in the condition when placed in the identation and connected as described can be sweetened by placing a pipe cleaning fluid in the empty bowl and the fan will draw the fluid through the pipe into the filter 48 to sweeten the pipe and rebuild it.
Thus a device has been provided that will effectively clean and rebuild a pipe or break in a new one as desired.
It is believed that the operation and construction of the device will be apparent to those skilled in the art and it is to be understood that various changes in the size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
1. A device of the character described comprising a hollow base member, a horizontal partition dividing the rear portion of said base member into upper and lower compartments, members providing a transversely disposed housing in said upper compartment, an absorbent filtering medium positioned in said housing, openings in a member of said housing providing communication between said housing and a remaining portion of said base member, coupling means for connecting said housing to a flexible connection for connecting a pipe stem to said housing, there being apertures in said partition, a valve for controlling said apertures, a fan in said base member below said partition for creating a suction in said housing,
means for actuating said fan, and means operated by said fan to actuate said valve to intermittently control the suction in said housing.
2. The apparatus as described in claim 1, wherein said last named means comprises a cam, an arm, a roller mounted on an end of said arm and engaging said cam, and a rod connecting said arm to said valve.
