Description

May 12, 1953 w. s. COOK EDGE ROLL FOR UPI-IOLSTERY AND THE LIKE Filed June 20, 1949 IN VEN TOR. [Way/r6 01 600 4 Patented May 12, 1953 EDGE ROLL FOR UPHOLSTERY AND THE LIKE Wayne S. Cook, Grand Rapids, Mich., assignor to Inc., a corporation of Sackner Products, Michigan I Application June 20, 1949, Serial No. 100,166
3 Claims. (Cl. 155-184) This invention relates to improvements in an edge roll for upholstery and the like.
The main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide an edge roll formed of a single strip of felted fibrous material which may be economically produced and provides a structure which is very strong and firm and maintains its shape for a long period under severe useage conditions.
Second, to provide an edge roll which may be formed of a single strip of material without the employment of reinforcing and at the same time is highly satisfactory for a wide variety of uses.
Third, to provide a structure of this character including a fabric covering, the covering being easily applied in manufacturing and very securely retained and which does not interfere with the desired resilience.
Fourth, to provide a structure having these advantages which may be economically produced in large quantities.
Objects relating to details and economies of the invention will appear from the description to follow. The invention is pointed out in the claims.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a section of an edge roll embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a short strip of the felt from which it is formed.
Fig. 3 is an edge view of the felt illustrating the first of the double or reverse folds.
Fig. 4 is an edge view illustrating the second of the double or reverse folds.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary perspective view of the edge roll of Fig. 1 provided with a fabric covering.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary perspective view of a modified form or embodiment of my invention.
In Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawing I illustrate one form of a completed structure embodying my invention, that is, it is ready for use as there illustrated. In Fig. 5 the same structure is provided with a covering. The strip of felt I from which the edge roll of my invention is formed is desirably formed with a major part or portion of jute fiber with which is mixed a substantial part of sisal fiber or hair, the sisal fiber or hair being relatively long as compared to the jute fiber but the jute fiber is effectively felted and embeds and retains the sisal fiber or hair. I have not attempted to indicate the jute or the sisal or hair as the characteristics of jute fiber and sisal fiber and hair will be well understood.
The edge roll of my invention comprises the body portion, designated generally by the numeral 2, and the flap or attaching web portion 3. The body portion is of generally rounded oval contour and is formed by reversely folding one edge portion of the strip. The inner fold or first fold 4 constitutes in effect a core and is embraced by the outer fold 5. The bight portion 6 of the outer fold is lapped upon the unfolded or flap portion 3 and secured thereto by a row of stitching 1 through the bight and through the portion of the strip on which the bight is superimposed. This imparts a generally rounded oval shape to the body portion which is desirable in an edge roll. The felt is of substantial thickness being desirably of the order of of an inch or more in thickness and while the felt is bendable it is relatively stiff and firm.
For many uses it is unnecessary to provide any covering for the structure described. However, some conditions may render a covering desirable and in such conditions a covering 8 of woven fabric, such as burlap or light fabric, is wrapped around the structure as shown in Fig. 1 with its edges overlapping at 9 and secured by longitudinally spaced rows of stitching l0 and II extending through the overlapped portion of the covering and securely binding it in place as well as securing the folds.
In the embodiment shown in Fig. 6 the double: or reverse folded strip is folded so that both edges:
I2 and I3 thereof project beyond the bight M of the outer fold. This in effect provides a stepped flap or attaching web and provides a graduated thickness from the roll edge [5 to the edge of the attaching flap. The stitching I6 is disposed through the bight portion of the outer fold and the superimposed unfolded portions. a desirable construction particularly where a relatively heavy edge roll is desired.
The edge rolls embodying my invention are desirable for a very wide variety of upholstering mattress edges and the like particularly where a strong reinforcing edge roll is desired. The structure may be economically formed by combined folding and stitching machines and is very uniform throughout the length thereof. The uses and applications of edge rolls are well understood in the art and therefore I have not illustrated my edge roll as installed. Edge rolls of different sizes may be formed of felt of different thickness but my invention is particularly desired where a relatively strong edge roll is especially advantageous.
Having thus described my invention, what I This is claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. An edge roll comprising a felted fibrous material double folded longitudinally upon itself with both edges projecting beyond the bight of the first fold which is superimposed, upon themfolded portions, and? stitches extending throu h such bight and the parts on which it is superimposed, one edge of the strip projecting SllbStflHztially beyond the other.
2. An edge roll comprising a strip' of felt of substantial thickness double folded longitudinally upon itself with one edge proafecting beyond the other, the bight portion of: the; first: fold; being: folded inwardly and disposed in superimposed spaced relation to the narrower of the unfolded 15 Number portions of the strip and secured thereto by stitching through the bight and both unfolded portions of the strip.
3. An edge roll formed of a strip of foldable felt double folded longitudinally upon itself with both edges extending beyond the folds to provide flap members one of which is narrower than the other, the folded parts being secured in their folded position.
