This invention relates to bed coverings and has for its general object to provide a compound covering comprising two washable covers and a washable casing or spread which can be used separate'ly as a complete covering independently of the other, or which can be used in. various combinations to provide single coverings of varied warmth.

,In the drawings, the numeral IE1 designates the spread of the compound covering which may be utilized separately as a light covering for a baby or as a casing for the cover members I i and 112 which may be in the form of washable blankets, quilts, puffs or comforters, and which may be combined with such spread in the manner hereinafter described to obtain coverings of varied weight and warmth. 1 preferably are slide fastener stringers whose interlocking elements are opened or locked in interiingered relation by means of a manually operated slider 26 in the manner usual with such fasteners. As is shown in Fig. l. of the drawings, the slide fastener structure may extend from one corner of the casing formed by the layers l3, and It, and along the top edge portions I8, It to a point short of the other ends of such portions, but along a suffiicient length of such edge portions to permit ready entry into the casing or spread it when the slider is completely opened. Each tab 26 is provided with a pair of complementary fastening devices such as the male snap member 21 and the female snap member 28, shown more clearly in Fig. 6 of the drawings.

The cover members II and I2 are each preferably, although not necessarily, made in the form of quilts. When made in the form of quilts, the members H and I2 are each preferably composed of outer layers of any suitable washable material such as silk, satin, rayon, chintz, etc. and are stuffed with a washable fiber material, such as lambs wool; the whole being united by quilting stitches in the usual fashion. It will be understood from the foregoing that each of the parts H), H and 52, may be used separately; the spread 50 when used alone, serving as a light summer coveringfor the baby, while the quilts H and/or 52 may be used when additional warmth is required. In such single use of the spread l and the quilts l i or 12, the complementary snaps on each tab thereof, are preferably interlocked, so as to reduce the size of the tabs and possible injury to the baby. Preferably also, the slider 20 of the fastener on the spread Ill has been moved to its fully closed position to cover theprojecting ends of the elements on the stringers i9, i9; the

23, 23 along the top edge of the spread concealing the closed fastener structure and preventing any possibility of the baby being scratched or otherwise injured by the same. Either one of the quilts H or ii may be used with the spread if! by inserting such quilt within the spread and interlocking the male snaps 27 of the spread with the female snaps of the inserted quilt and in the case of quilt 52 by also interlocking the female snaps 28 of the spread with the male snaps 31 of such quilt. If it is desired to use the two quilts II and I2 together as a unit, the complemental male and female snaps on the ends of such quilts are interlocked together. When maximum warmth is required, the snaps are interlocked in the manner shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings. In such use of the covering, the female snaps 33 of quilt II are interlocked with the male snaps 3| of quilt l2 and the female snaps 32 of quilt I2 are interlocked with the male snaps 21 of spread Hi.

It will be noted that whenever two or three of the parts 10, II and 22 are secured together in the manner previously described, the resulting compound covering. in which the quilts H and I2 in effect constitute a lining for the spread II can be handled as a single covering, by grasping the top edge of such compound covering and lay- .ingit. on thechildui. This facilitates the covering of the child and enables the several layers of the compound covering to be laid smoothly and evenly on the child with a minimum of effort. Besides the ease of handling and the varied conditions of temperature which can be taken care of by the compound covering, the latter also possesses the advantages that its separate parts can be readily disassembled and cleaned and that when the quilts l l and/or 82 are contained within the spread 50, they are kept clean and free from contamination by dirt.

While I have hereinabove described a preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be apparcut to those in the art, that various changes and modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention. For example, instead of providing the spread I0 and quilts H and 2 with snap fasteners, these members may be provided with separable slide fasteners to obtain the results desired. This construction is shown in Figs. '7 to 10 of the drawings in which the spread and quilts illustrated are made similar to those shown in Figs. 1 through 6 of the drawings, but differ in regard to the following details. Layer M of the modified spread ii) is shown provided with a fastener stringer 35 similar to stringer IS on the layer M of spread Hi. Layer l3 of spread Ill however, has mounted thereon, a stringer 38 which is provided with a series of interlocking elements along both its top and bottom longitudinal edges. The upper series of interlocking elements on string-'- ers 35 is adapted to be interlocked with the elements on stringer 35 by means of the slider 20' in the manner previously described. The lower series of interlocking elements on stringer 38 form part of a completely separable fastener, the slider 31 of which is permanently mounted on the lower series of interlocking elements on stringer 35, and which may include either the series of complementary fastener elements on stringer 39 attached to the upper edge of quilt H or the series of fastener elements attached to the upper edge of a stringer 38 secured to the upper edge of quilt l2. It will thus be seen that either of the quilts H or l2 may be attached to the spread iii by causing the interengagement of the locking elements on the lower edge of stringer 36 with either the locking elements on stringer 39 or the locking elements along the upper edge of stringer 33, through manipulation of the slider 31. The stringer 38 may also form part of a completely separable fastener composed of such stringer, the series of interlocking elements provided along the lower edge of strin er 39 and the slider 4i] which is permanently connected to such elements on stringer 39. By this construction, the two quilts H and I2 may be connected toget-her as a separate compound covering, Ior the two quilts may be connected with the quilt 10' in the manner shown in Fig. 9 of the drawings to form a compound covering including all three parts. This construction in addition to possessing the advantages previously described with respect to the parts provided with snap fasteners, also enables the parts to be connected along the entire lengths of their upper edges, thereby facilitating handling and smooth layin of the com pound covers. I

I claim:

1. A compound covering comprising a casing having its top edges separable to permit entry therein and constituting a complete quilt and adapted to be used alone as such, a covering meme ber likewise constituting. a complete covering be;-

ing removably positioned within said casing and of such dimensions as to be substantially equal in area to the area of the enclosing sides of said casing, said casing having along its top edges complementary fastening devices for securing said edges together when said casing is used either alone or with the covering member contained thereon, a border of textile material projecting outwardly from the edges of said casing and along the top edges of the latter concealing said complementary fastening devices, additional fastening devices mounted on the top edges of said casing and wholly contained within the confines of such casing below said complementary fastening devices, and cooperating fastening devices mounted on the top edge of said covering member and adapted to be interlocked with the fastening devices within said casing to form a compound covering.

2. A compound covering comprising a casing having its top edges separable to permit entry therein and constituting a, complete quilt adapted to be used alone as such, complementary fastening devices provided on the top edges of said casing for securing said edges together when the casing is used alone or with a covering member contained therein a ruffle projecting outwardly from the edges of said casing and along the top edges thereof concealing said complementary fastening devices and supporting means connected to the interior top edge portion of said casing and depending downwardly therefrom within the casing to a point substantially below said complementary fastening devices and additional fastening devices mounted on the pendant portions of said supporting means and adapted to cooperate with fastening devices provided on a covering member to support the latter within said casing.

3. A compound covering comprising a casing having its top edges separable to permit entry therein and constituting a complete quilt adapted to be used alone as such, a covering member likewise constituting a complete covering and a second covering member likewise constituting a complete covering, said covering members being removably positioned within said casing and each being of such dimensions as to be substantially equal in area to the area of the enclosing sides of said casing, said casing having on its top edges complementary fastening devices for securing said edges together when said casing is used alone or with either or both of the cover members contained therein, additional fastening devices mounted on the top edge portions of said casing and wholly contained Within the confines of the latter below said complementary fastening devices, fastening devices on the top edge of at least one of said covering members cooperable with the additional fastening devices within said casing, and a second set of complementary fastening devices mounted on the top edges of said covering members for securing said covering members together whereby said covering members will be connected together at their top edges by said second set of complementary fastening devices and Will be supported as a unit by said additional fastening devices.
