l YUNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BERNARD H. SCHONHOFF, OF CAPE GIRARDEAU, MISSOURI.
BARREL ROLLER AND GUIDE.
SPECIFICATIO forming part of Letters Patent No.'263,729, dated September 5, 1882.
` Appui-,anon med July 27,1832. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, BERNARD H. SCHONHOFF, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cape Girardeau, in the county of Cape Girardeau and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barrel Bollers and Guides; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had tothe annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and gures of reference marked thereon.
Figure lofI the drawings is a perspective view of my invention, and Fig. 2 a top plan view of the same.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in barrel rollers and guides, and the object thereof is to produce such a device as will be simple in its construction and equally adapted for use upon the smallest barrel to the4 largest hogshead, enabling the operator to have full control of the barrel or hogshead when transferring the same'from one place to another, guiding and directing the said barrel or hogshead with perfect ease, Without incurring any risk t0 his hands or limbs, at the same time saving much time and labor lost in the usual manner of transferring barrels and hogsheads from one place to another; also, from the peculiar construction of this barrel roller or guide additional strength is given to the headings ofthe barrel or hogshead while being handled, thus preventing them from being pressed out, and consequently the loss from leakage or tot-al destruction of the contents is avoided.
Another object of the present invention is to admit ot' barrels or hogsheads being raised or lowered on steep embankments with ease and security, thus doing away with skids or slides, which frequently break the hoops of the barrels and cause them to part, and thereby lose their contents.
These objects Iattain by the construction substantially as shown in the accompanying drawings and hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Arepresen ts a suitable handle, having an arm, B, in the shape of a tong, securely fastened thereto. Pivoted to the arm B is an arm,O,corresponding in form to the said arm B, but having its upper end free. The lower extremities ot' the arms B C are formed in the shape of bearings or sleeves b, in which are set rods D, pointed at their inner ends, c, to engage with theheads of the barrel or similar vessel, said rods being readily adjusted to or from the barrel and held in the desired position by means of thumbscrews d, passing through the top of the bearings or sleeves b and resting in niches e, formed upon the rods.
J ournaledupon the rods D, near their pointed ends, are circular plates E, made of a size to correspond with the head of a barrel, so that the pointed end of the rods will always strike the center of the headings, thus making the Weight equal during the revolution of the barrel, and do away with the necessity of the points being set by the operator. These plates E also serve to give additional strength to the head- 7o ings of the barrel and prevent them. from being forced out when the barrels are being transported from one place to another.l and when the arms are released from the barrel serve as wheels to facilitate the carrying of the device.
When a barrel is to be transferred from one place to another the arms B C, carrying the adjustable pointed rods D, are brought together, causing the points c to enter-the headings of the barrel just far enough to hold the plates E in place without causing any leakage or loss of contents from the said barrel, and the free end of the arm G secured and held against the handle Aby means ofa sliding ring, f, working in a groove, 1],cut in the said handle, thus firmly holding the arm G and preventing the barrel from becomingdisengaged.
It will be seen from the above description that a barrel roller or guide of this construction can be made at a small cost which will be easy of adjustment, light in weight, and equally applicable to barrels or hogsheads, and by its use time, labor, and loss are saved in transferring barrels or hogsheads from one place to 95 another without danger to the hands or limbs ofthe operator. At the same time it admits of the raising or lowering of barrels and like vessels upon an inclination or steep embankment without the aid ot' skids or slides, which roo frequently break the hoops from the barrels, causing them to break apart, and thereby lose their contents.
The device may also be readily used as a p grapple or sling, in connection with a hoistingrope, to-elevate barrels or like vessels from the ground to the upper stories of a building, or to lower the same from such buildings, or from a wharf or pier into the hold of a vessel.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a barrel roller or guide, the plates Il, journalcd upon the pointed adjustable rods D, said plates being made of a size equal to the headings of a barrel or hogshead, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. In a barrel roller or guide, the adjustable l vpointed rods D, working;` in bearings or sleeves' b, formed upon the arms B C, and provided with niches e, in combination with the plates E and thumb-screws d, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a barrel roller or guide, the handle A, having secured thereto the tong-shaped arm B and the similarly-shaped free arm C, pivotally connected to the arm B, and secured and held in place by the sliding ring f, working upon the handle A7 in combination with the adjustable pointed rods D, thumb-screws d, and journalcd plates E, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presenceV 3 5 of two witnesses.
