My present invention relates to sewing machines of the type for closing, by sewing, the open mouth of a filled bag for carrying wheat or other material, or for joining, by sewing, cloth, fabric and canvas, or the like, the purpose being to improve the practicability of instruments of this kind, as well as to reduce their manufacturing cost, by the use of new and unique features made apparent throughout the specification.
The primary object of my present invention is to provide an electric-powered sewing machine of such external shape and such light and balanced weight that the same is easily carried by an operator in one of his hands and handled so as to follow the edges of the fabrics to be joined by sewing, irrespective of the inclination, direction, position and outline of such edges.
Another object of my present invention is to provide the machine with handling means and controlling devices so that the machine is easily controlled by the one hand of the operator which carries the same.
Another object of my present invention is to provide a mechanism to drive the severalmoving devices that start the formation of a chair-1 type seam and to move forth the joined edges of the bag-mouth, or the like, said mechanism to be easily enclosed in a casing shaped to produce the desired weight balance and practicability of the instrument.
Another object of my present invention is to provide a transmission device connecting the power source to the operating devices, so as to eration and the movement of the sewed edges,
and the second one of which comprises the driving electric motor, the transmission and the mechanism necessary to transform the continuous rotating movement of the motor driving shaft to produce reciprocating motion, properly timed, of the parts that finally provide the seam.

2 The first group of parts is enclosed in :a very little head casing which is supported, by a couple of parallel bars, in an advanced position relative to a main casing, which encloses the second group of parts and comprises a pistQl-gri-p handle. Enclosed in or connected to the rear end of the main casing is a small electric motor which drives the machine. In another embodiment of my invention, the power plant constitutes a separate unit from the hand-carried sewin machine, and the driving is made through a flexible shaft, which is joined to the rear end of the main casing. The whole machine looks substantially like a big pistol, in which the alignment of the head casing and main casing resemble the barrel, the head casing being similar to the muzzle.
The sewing and driving mechanism can be actuated according to any known system, provided that the chosen mechanism is divided .as above said, according to the invention. The .operating connection between the :two groups of parts is performed by means .of connecting rods or shafts passing through the bars joining the two casings. The rear face of the head casing acts as one of the two plates squeezing together the edges to be sewed, the second one being movably placed on the bars joining the two casings.
According to this disposition, the .edges to be sewed are kept at right angle in relation to the aligment of two casings, and during the regular sewing of the mouth of a filled and upright bag, the instrument can be easily held by an operator, as easily as he can hold and horizontally aim a pistol. This feature gives the advantage that the weight of the whole apparatus is well balanced on the pistol-grip handle, and the little head casing can easily follow the outline of the parts to be sewed together.
The variability of the working speed can be accomplished by means of any known suitable mechanical transmission or by .means of any known suitable electric device allowing gradual reduction of the current, AC. or D.'C. fed to the motor, the mechanical system being the preferred one.
In a preferred embodiment of my invention, the group of parts enclosed in the main casing (the group that, for simplicity, will be named the driving group through-out the remainder of this specification) comprises substantially one rotating disk-like member, the outline of which is shaped as a cam and gives axial --r-eciprocating motion to a shaft the end of which carries the against the rear face of the head casing. an embodiment allows the operator to handle feed dogs or toothed member for moving cloth placed between the two squeezing plates. On a face of said disk-like member is eccentrically placed a pivot which acts as a crank-shaft driving a connecting rod that gives the necessary reciprocating motion to the needle bar. On the other face of said member are two ring-like axial cams, one of which acts on the outer end of an arm carried by the abovesaid shaft, to which a reciprocating rotative motion is given, that in turn moves the toothed member back and forth, the latter being connected to the same shaft by means of another arm. The second cam, by means of a second arm and a second shaft, gives reciprocating motion to the hook that in cooperation with the needle makes the chain type seam. Said hook is made according to any known system in the art of planning and constructing sewing machines. The hook, the toothed member and the arm connecting said member to its driving shaft are the movable parts enclosed in the head casing. The two shafts are enlcosed in tubes connecting said casing to the main casing, and the latter encloses all remain- 'ing parts of the mechanism.
In a particularly preferred embodiment of my invention, the rotating disk-like member is driven by a helical gear meshing with a worm gear, the latter being driven by a transmission system comprising two staggered disks, facing a each other, and an idle wheel squeezed therebetween, and means that allow the operator to vary the distance of the point of contact between the idle wheel and the faces of both disks so as to vary the transmission ratio between the first disk,
driving the worm gear, and the second disk,

causing a transmission on the lowest ratio position, while a gradual pushing on the trigger causes corresponding gradual movement of the idle wheel towards the highest transmission ratio position. As shown in Fig. 1, the pistol-like general outline of the machine comprises variou aligned parts; the small head casing I comprises, as its rear face, a plate 2 against which the edges of the mouth 3 of a bag can be squeezed by a counter-plate 4 acting as a pressure foot and being axially movable along the tubes 5 and 5 extending from the front face 1' of the main casing 8 and firmly connecting casings I and 8 together. On th rear face of main casing 3 is mounted the casing 9 of a suitable lightweight electric motor.
This motor, if desired, can be separated from the machine, which then can be driven by any suitable source of power through a flexible shaft, one end of which joins the machine on the same rear end of casing 8.
From the lower face of casing 8 a pistol type handle I0 extends, said handle I0 comprising a trigger ll easily operable by the forefinger of the hand which holds the handle and the thumb of the same hand easily acting on the flattened end of the lever l2 extending from the left side face of easing 8; said lever I2 is connected, by suitable means, to the movable counter-plate 4 so as to move said counter-plate from the plate 2, while when no action is exerted on said lever, said counterplate, being pushed by suitable sprin s is allowed to freely move against the plate 2.
Fig. 5 discloses one possible linkag mean for interconnecting the operating lever 12 and the pressure foot member 4 so that the latter may be moved against the action of springs I8 by operation of lever l2. As is shown in Fig. 5, the rod 60 is fixedly connected to the lever 12 and rotates about its own longitudinal axis upon operation of lever (2. Rod 60 has fixedly connected thereto a cam 6| which cooperates with the arm 62 of rod 63 which is connected at one end thereof to plate 4 so that when the outer operating end of lever l2, shown in Fig. 5, i moved downwardly the cam 6| will engage arm 62 to move the rod 63 and plate 4 against the action of springs I8.
From the front face 1 of casing 8 extends the front end of a bar l3, said front end being constructed to carry the needle I4, which operates through the plates 2 and 4, the latter being provided with suitable openings for this purpose.
On the upper face of easing 8 can be mounted a tension device l5 for the twine fed to the needle M, as well as a feeding reel or bobbin, not shown, or any other suitable known device intended to carry and feed twine, or thread, or sewing cotton, with which the seam is to be made.
The counter-plate 4 is firmly mounted on the front end of two tubular members l6 and I1,
placed around and being slidable along the two tubes 5 and 6, respectively. Between the rear end of said tubular members I6 and I1 and the front face I of casing 8 springs l8 are inserted (as shown in Fig. 3) so as to urge the counterplate 4 against plate 2. Said springs 18 are enclosed by outer tubular members l9 and 20, also mounted on the front face I of casing 8, and

The actuating mechanism enclosed by theabove casings and parts is outlined in Fig. 2 and comprises a rotating disk-like member 2| connected with a helical gear 22 meshing with worm 23 borne by driving shaft 24. On the lower face of member 2! an eccentric pivot 1!] extends down, as is clearly illustrated in Fig. 6 which shows disk 2| a viewed from the underside thereof, and said pivot and disk constitute a crank thatreciprocates the needle bar l3 by means of a connecting rod, or link 25 pivotally connected at one end to bar I3 and at its opposite end to pivot 10. On the periphery of member 2| a cut-out 26 is formed, and said periphery acts as a cam cooperating with a roller 21 borne by the free end of an arm 28. Said free end bears another roller 29, arranged to run over outer part of the upper surface of member 21 and cooperating with a cam 38] mounted on the top surface of disk 2| and having the shape shown in Fig. 2.
On the same upper surface of member 2| runs along an inner circle of lesser diameter, a third roller 3| borne by the free end of a second arm 32, and along said inner circle the member 21 bears an annular cam 33, which covers the inner circle. The elements 30 and 33 act as axial cams relative to the rollers 29 and 3|, respectively. As consequence of this arrangement, the constant rotative motion of member 2| imparts to the arms 28 and 32 the following reciprocating and turning motions, timed with the reciprocating motion of needle 14: the arm 23 is moved up and down and moved back and forth, while the arm 32 only is moved up and down. Of course, the rollers 21, 29 and 3| are kept in contact with the respective cooperating cams by suitable spring devices, not shown. All the above described parts are enclosed in th main casing 8, and the described reciprocating motions are transmitted to the part enclosed in the head casing I by means of two shafts 34 and 35 firmly connected with arms 28 and 32, respectively, and movin inside the tubes 6 and 5, respectively. At their front ends, the shafts 34 and 35 bear, respectively, an arm 36 and a hook 31 that cooperates with the needle [4 to make a chain type' seam, according to a well known system. The arm 36 is connected to and moves the plate 33, working in an opening of the plate 2 and provided with toothed surface 39 and a hollow 40 that allows the needle to en ter in the head casing I and permit a loop of twine to be grabbed by the hook 31 to make a chain type seam. The shaft 35 imparts to the hook 3'! the necessary reciprocating motion,'while the shaft 34, with its double angular and axial reciprocating motions, imparts to the toothed plate 38, which acts as feed dogs, the necessary transversal back and forth movements, and the necessary setting back during its return transversal movement.
As consequence of the above described division of mechnical parts of the whole work of the machine, the primary object of my invention is attainedbecause the reduced space required to enclose the small and lightweight parts 36, 31 and 38 allows the construction ofa very'little head casing i and the construction of a very well balanced and handy instrument.
An important improvement of the machine according to this invention is accomplished by inserting between the worm gear 22 and the electric motor or the driving flexible shaft, atransmi device a s own-in -1 Sechdevice comprises two friction disks 4| and 42, respectively connected to the shaft 24 carrying worm 23 and to the shaft 43 of the motor, or coupled to the flexible driving shaft. Said disks 41 and 42 are parallel to and face each other, but are arranged in a suitable bearing frame (not shown) with the center of one disk substantially opposite the periphery of the second one.
Said disks 4| and 42 squeeze between themselves the idle wheel 44, the axis of which is perpendicular to the axis of both disks 4| and 42 and'lies substantially in the same plane as the axes of rotation of the latter. Said idle wheel 44 is rotatably carried by a fork supporting member 45, pivoting around an axis 46 and provided with a tail 4? connected, by means of any suitable known mechanical transmission or linkage to the trigger H. As is shown in Fig. 4, the trigger H is pivotally mounted by means of the shaft 50 connected thereto. To the trigger ll there is connected the lever 5| having the inclined surface 52 which is maintained in engagement with the lower end of lever 4'! by the spring 5'! which bears against the lever 4'! and urgesthe same towards the inclined surface 52. The spring 53 bears against the trigger H and urges the same in a direction opposite to the arrow 53. When the trigger is moved in the direction of arrow 53 against the action of spring 56, the inclined surface 52 is moved with respect to the lever 47 in the direction of arrow 54 so as to move lever ll against the action of spring 5'5 in the direction of arrow 55 and in this way move the roller is nearer to the center of disk 4! so as to increase the speed of rotation of disk 4!. When the trigger is released spring 56 moves it back to its original position, and spring 5! moves lever 41 back to its original position so as to thereby move roller 44 back to its original position over the center of disk 42. This arrangement allows the operator to run the machine at very slow speed while preparing the same for operation, and while engaging the parts to be sewed together, and allows the operator to gradually speed up the machine according to the difficulties of the sewing, and to obtain, at any instant, the best operation speed.
While Ihave described one form herein of my invention, I do not intend to limit myself thereby, it being apparent that several changes, modifications, additions and even omissions may suggest themselves to persons skilled in the art, and it being apparent that, without further analysis, the foregoing will so reveal the gist of my invention that others can, by applying current knowledge, readily adapt it for various ap-- plications without omitting features that, from the standpoint of the prior art, fairly constitute essential characteristics of the generic or specific aspect of this invention and, therefore, such adaptations should and are intended to be comprehended within the meaning and range of equivalence of the appended claims.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A sewing device, comprising in combination, a first casing having a side surface; sewing means located in said first casing; a second casing having a bottom surface and a side surface, said side surface of said second casing being located opposite to and facing said side surface of said first casing and said second casing being substantially larger than said first casing; elongated connecting means extending between said ,sides of said casings and interconnecting the; same;
operating means partly mounted in said second casing, extending along said connecting means and cooperating with said sewing means in said first casing for operating the same; and handle means extending from and connected to a substantially central portion of said bottom surface of said second casing, whereby the sewing device may be easily supported and balanced by an operator holding said handle means and maintaining said connecting means in a substantially horizontal position.
2. A sewing device, comprising in combination, a first casing having a side surface; sewing means located in said first casing; a second casing having a bottom surface and a side surface, said side surface of said second casing being located opposite to and facing said side surface of said first casing and said second casing being substantially larger than said first casing; elongated connecting means extending between said sides of said casings and interconnecting the same; operating means partly mounted in said second casing, extending along said connecting means and cooperating with said sewing means in said first casing for operating the same; pressure foot means mounted about said connecting means; spring means operatively connected to said pressure foot means and urging the same toward said side surface of said first casing; and handle means extending from and connected to a substantially central portion of said bottom surface of said second casing, whereby the sewing device may be easily supported and balanced by an operator holding said handle means and maintaining said connecting means in a substantially horizontal position.
3. A sewing device, comprising in combination. a first casing having a side surface; sewing means located in said first casing; a second casing having a bottom surface and a side surface, said side 1 rod means; spring means operatively connected to said pressure foot means and urging the same toward said side surface of said first casing; moving means extending from said second casing and being operatively connected to said pressure foot means for moving the same against the action of said spring means away from said side surface of said first casing; and handle means extending from and connected to a substantially central portion of said bottom surface of said second i casing, whereby the sewing device may be easily supported and balanced by an operator holding said handle means and maintaining said rod means in a substantially horizontal position, said handle means being located adjacent to said moving means.
4. A sewing device, comprising in combination, a first casing having a side surface; hook means mounted in said first casing for movement therein; serrated plate means for feeding material to be sewn, said plate means being mounted in said first casing for movement therein; a second casing having a bottom surface and a side surface, said side surface of said second casing being located opposite to and facing-said side surface of said first casing and said second casing being substantially larger than said first casing; a. first rod extending between and passing transversely through said side surfaces of said casings, said first rod being fixedly connected adjacent one end thereof to said hook means; a second rod extending between and passing transversely through said side surfaces of said casing, said second rod being substantially parallel to said first rod and connected to said serrated plate means, elongated, needle-supporting bar means extending through said side surface of said second casing toward said side surface of said first casing, said bar means beingsubstantially parallel to said rods and mounted in said second casing for reciprocal movement along the longitudinal axis thereof; operating means located in said second casing and being operatively connected to said first and second rods and said bar means for reciprocating the latter along its longitudinal axis, for oscillating said first rod about its longitudinal axis, for oscillating said second rod about its longitudinal axis and for reciprocating said second rod along its longitudinal axis; drive means operatively connected to said operating means for actuating the same; handle means extending from and connected to a substantially central portion of said bottom surface of said second casing; and control means operatively connected to said handle means and operating means for controlling the latter.
5. A sewing device, comprising in combination, a first casing having a side surface; hook means mounted in said first casing for movement therein; serrated plate means for feeding material to be sewn, said plate means being mounted in said first casing for movement therein; a second casing having a bottom surface and a side surface, said side surface of said second casing being located opposite to and facing said side surface of said first casing and said second casing being substantially larger than said first casing; a first rod extending between and passing transversely through said side surfaces of said casings, said first rod being fixedly connected adjacent one end thereof to said hook means; a second rod extending between and passing transversely through said side surfaces of said casing, said second rod being substantially parallel to said first rod and connected to said serrated plate means; at least one elongated tube extending between and being connected at its opposite ends to said side surfaces of said casings, respectively, so as to interconnect the same and so as to support said first casing from said second casing, said tube surrounding one of said rods; elongated, needle-supporting bar means extending through said side surface of said second casing toward said side surface of said first casing, said bar means being substantially parallel to said rods and mounted in said second casing for reciprocal movement along the longitudinal axis thereof; operating means located in said second casing and being operatively connected to said first and second rods and said bar means for reciprocating the latter along its longitudinal axis, or oscillating said first rod about its longitudinal axis, for oscillating said second rod about'its longitudinal axis and for reciprocating said second rod along its longitudinal axis; drive means operatively connected to said operating means for actuating the same; handle means extending from and connected to a substantially central portion of said bottom surface of said second --casing; and control means operatively "connected to said handle means and said operating means for controlling said operating means.
6. A sewing device, comprising in combination, a first casing having a side surface; hook means mounted in said first casing for movement therein; separated plate means for feeding material to be sewn, said plate means being mounted in said first casing for movement therein; a second casing having a bottom surface and a side surface, said side surface of said second casing bein located opposite to and facing said side surface of said first casing and said second casing being substantially larger than said first casing; a first rod extending between and passing transversely through said side surface of said casings, said first rod being fixedly connected adjacent one end thereof to said hook means; a second rod extending between and passing transversely through said side surfaces of said casing, said second rod being substantially parallel to said first rod and connected to said serrated plate means; at least one elongated tube extending between and being connected at its opposite ends to said side surfaces of said casings, respectively, so as to interconnect the same and so as to support said first casing from said second casing, said tube surrounding one of said rods; pressure foot means mounted about said tube; spring means operatively connected to said pressure foot means for urging the same towards said side surface of said first casing, said spring means being located about said elongated tube; elongated, needle-supporting bar means extending through said side surface of said second casing toward said side surface of said first casing, said bar means being substantially parallel to said rods and mounted in said second casing for reciprocal movement along the longitudinal axis thereof; operating means located in said second casing and being operatively connected to said first and second rods and said bar means for reciprocating the latter along its longitudinal axis, for osci1- lating said first rod about its longitudinal axis, for oscillating said second rod about its 1ongitudinal axis and for reciprocating said second 1 rod along its longitudinal axis; drive means operatively connected to said operating means for actuating the same; handle means extending from and connected to a substantially central portion of said bottom surface of said second casing; and control means operatively connected to said handle means and said operating means for controlling the latter.
7. A sewing device, comprising in combination, a first casing having a side surface; hook means mounted in said first casing for movement therein; serrated plate means for feeding material to be sewn, said plate means being mounted in said first casing for movement therein; 'a second casing having a bottom surface and a side surface, said side surface of said second casing being located opposite to and facing said side surface of said first casing and said second casing being substantially larger than said first casing; a first rod extending between and passing transversely through said side surfaces of said casings, said first rod being fixedly connected adjacent one end thereof to said hook means; a second rod extending between and passing transversely through said side surfaces of said casing, said second rod being substantially parallel to said first rod and connected to said serrated plate means; elongated, needle-supporting bar means extending through said side surface of said second casing toward said side surface ."10 of said first casing, said bar means being substantially parallel to said rods and mounted in said second casing for reciprocal movement along the longitudinal axis thereof; operating means located in said second casing and being operatively connected to said first and second rods and said bar means for reciprocating the latter along its longitudinal axis, for oscillating said first rod about its longitudinal axis, for oscillating said second rod about its longitudinal axis and for reciprocating said second rod along its longitudinal axis, said operating means comprising a first crank located in said second casing and being fixedly connected to said first rod, a second crank located in said second casing and being fixedly connected to said second rod, a rotatably mounted plate located in said second casing, and cam means mounted on one side of said rotatably mounted plate and cooperating with said first and second cranks for actuating the latter in a desired sequence so as to thereby oscillate said first and. second rods about their longitudinal axes; drive means operatively connected to said rotatably mounted plate for rotating the same; handle means extending from and connected to a substantially central portion of said bottom surface of said second casing; and control means operatively connected to said handle means and said operating means for controlling the latter.

A sewing device, comprising in combination, a first casing having a side surface; hook means mounted in said first casing for movement therein; serrated plate means for feeding material to be sewn, said plate means being mounted in said first casing for movement therein; a second casing having a bottom surface and a side surface, said side surface of said second casing being located opposite to and facing said side surface of said first casing and said second casing being substantially larger than said first casing; a first rod extending between and passing transversely through said side surfaces of said casings, said first rod being fixedly connected adjacent one end thereof to said hook means; a second rod extending between and passing transversely through said side surfaces of said casing, said second rod being substantially parallel to said first rod and connected to said serrated plate means; elongated, needle-supporting bar means extending through said side surface of said second casing toward said side surface of said first casing, said bar means being substantially parallel to said rods and mounted in said second casing for reciprocal movement along the longitudinal axis thereof; operating means located in said second casing and being operatively connected to said first and second rods and said bar means for reciprocating the latter along its longitudinal axis, for oscillating said first rod about its longitudinal axis, for oscillating said second rod about its longitudinal axis and for reciprocating said second rod along its longitudinal axis, said operating means comprising a first crank located in said second casing and being fixedly connected to said first rod, a second crank located in said second casing and being fixedly connected to said second rod, a rotatably mounted plate located in said second casing, and cam means mounted on one side of said rotatably mounted plate and cooperating with said first and second cranks for actuating the latter in a desired sequence so as to thereby oscillate said first and second rods about their longitudinal axes, said rotatably mounted plate having peripheral portions which are located at different distances from the center of rotation of said plate, pin means connected to said second crank and engaging said peripheral portions of said rotatably mounted plate so that the rotation of said plate moves said pin means to thereby reciprocate said second rod along its axis; drive means operatively connected to said rotatably mounted plate for rotating the same; handle means extending from and connected to a substantially central portion of said bottom surface of said second casing; and control means operatively connected to said handle means and said operating means for controlling the latter.

A sewing device, comp-risin in combination, a first casing having a side surface; hook means mounted in said first casing for movement therein; serrated plate means for feeding material to be sewn, said plate means being mounted in said first casing for movement therein; a second casing having a bottom surface and a side surface, said side surface of said second casing being located opposite to and facing said side surface of said first casing and said second casing being substantially larger than said first casing; a first rod extending between and passing transversely through said side surfaces of said casings, said first rod being fixedly connected adjacent one end thereof to said hook means; a second rod extending between and passing transversely through said side surfaces of said casing, said second rod being substantially parallel to said first rod and connected to said serrated plate means; elongated, needle-supporting bar means extending through said side surface of said second casing toward said side surface of said first casing, said bar, means being substantially parallel to said rods and mounted in said second casing for reciprocal movement along the longitudinal axis thereof; operating means located in said second casing and being operatively connected to said first and second rods and said bar means for reciprocating the latter along its longitudinal axis, for oscillating said first rod about its longitudinal axis, for oscillating said second rod about its longitudinal axis and for reciprocating said second rod along its longitudinal axis, said operating means comprising a first crank located in said second casing and being fixedly connected to said first rod, a second crank located in said second casing and being fixedly connected to said second rod, a rotatably mounted plate located in said second casing, and cam means mounted on one side of said rotatably mounted plate and cooperating with said first and second cranks for actuating the latter in a desired sequence so as to thereby oscillate said first and second rods about their longitudinal axes, said rotatably mounted plate having peripheral portions which are located at different distances from the center of rotation of said plate, pin means connected to said second crank and engaging said peripheral portions of said rotatably mounted plate so that the rotation of said plate moves said pin means to thereby reciprocate said second rod along it axis, and an elongated link member pivotally connected adjacent one end thereof to said needle-supporting bar means and being pivotally connected adjacent an opposite end thereof to the side of rotatably mounted plate opposite to said one side thereof and at a point spaced from the center of rotation of said plate so that the rotation of said plate reciprocates said bar means; drive means operatively connected to said rotatably mounted plate for rotating the same; handle means extending from and connected to a substantially central portion of said bottom surface of said second casing; and control means operatively connected to said handle means and said operating means for controlling the latter.

A sewing device, comprising in combination, a first casing having a side surface; hook means mounted in said first casing for movement therein; serrated plate means for feeding material to be sewn, said plate means being mounted in said first casing for movement therein; a second casing having a bottom surface and a side surface, said side surface of said second casing being located opposite to and facing said side surface of said first casing and said second casing being substantially larger than said first casing; a first rod extending between and passing transversely through said side surfaces of said casings, said first rod being fixedly connected adjacent one end thereof to said hook means; a seccond rod extending between and passing transversely through said side surfaces of said casing, said second rod being substantially parallel to said first rod and connected to said serrated plate means; elongated, needle-supporting bar means extending through said side surface of said second casing toward said side surface of said first casing, said bar means being substantially parallel to said rods and mounted in said second casing for reciprocal movement along the longitudinal axis thereof; operating means located in said second casing and being operatively connected to said first and second rods and said bar means for reciprocating the latter along its longitudinal axis, for oscillating said first rod about its longtiudinal axis, for oscillating said second rod about its longitudinal axis and for reciprocating said second rod along its longitudinal axis; drive means operatively connected to said operating means for actuating the same, said drive means comprising a driving disc and a driven disc each having a side surface spaced from and facing the side surface of the other disc, the center of said driving disc being located opposite to the periphery of said driven disc, a roller member mounted between said side surfaces of said discs and having the periphery thereof in engagement with said side surfaces and linkage means operatively connected to said roller for locating the same at a desired position between the centers and peripheries of said discs so as to control the speed with which said driven disc is rotated by said driving disc; handle means extending from and connected to a substantially central portion of said bottom surface of said second casing; and control means operatively connected to said handle means and linkage means for operating the latter.
