This invention relates to work holders, esp cially as adjustable to variable diameter rotatable work treating tools.
This invention has utility when incorporated. with a grinder, wherein there is a drive for the abrasive element or wheel, and diameter reduction from wear in which the element and the holder for the work have adjustment for adap tion to the range of conditions thereby developed in practice.

Upon a bench or support l, screws 2 may anchor sheet metal feet or brackets 3 as weld-assembled with a receptacle or vessel 4, adapted to retain a cutting-promoting substance or water 5. Set screws 6 provide for mounting a removable lid or cover 1 forming an extension means or housing portion on the top of the vessel or support 4 therefor.
A base 3 on the bench I provides a support for a prime mover or electric motor 9 having, on its shaft ill, a pulley H for a V-type belt 12 to a driven pulley l3, fixed by a set screw M with a shaft 15. The shaft 15 has bearings 16 in a U"-bracket l'l swingable on "a bearing 'pin I8 mounted by parallel cheek portions or flanges l9 rising from the lid 1 about an opening 2:]. A cover 2|, spanning between the pin I8 and the shaft l5, forms a partial shield 22 over a friction drive rubber-faced roller 23. The roller 23 is yieldably held to peripherally engage an abrasive disk or grinding element 24 upwardly protruding from the opening 20 between the flanges l9.
the flanges l9 and with spring wraps about the pin l8, has a medial loop 21 engaging the underside of the cover 2|, thereby urging the roller 23 against the grinder or work treating tool 24'.
The grinder wheel 24 is rotatably mounted with the wheel having its bearing on a shaft-28'. The shaft 22? has flattened end portions 29 having centrally thereinto intern-ally threaded seats adapted to be engaged by externally threaded cap screws 35 thru slots 31 in the lid 1 adjacent the flanges ill. The slots 3| are parallel in a plane lateral to a horizontal radius from the shaft [5. The shaft or bearing 28 for the Wheel 24 is thus adjustable relatively to the support 4 and along the lid I. Adjusted proximity for efiicient contact between the driving friction roller 23 and the driven disk 24' is determined and caps 32 on the stems 30 clamp lock the disk 24 against shifting therefrom during operation.
Inasmuch as the disk 2t is of approximately uniform abrasive body thruout and the use grad-- tact, this means that, even tho the diameter or the work-engaged wheel 2'4 may be reduced, its lineal peripheral speed will be maintained. Notches 33 in the flanges [9 provide clearance for the shaft [5 to swing downward in maintaining its frictional driving contact with the disk 24.
Remote from the notches 33, the flanges I 9 have a higher shield or housing portion '34 'astride, or embracing the wheel 24. The portion 3'4 has therein a pair of slots 35, transversely in regis ter, which slots 35' extend toward the frame lid or cover I and the bearing for the Wheel 2 4' on the shaft 28. The lot 35 are parallel to a top edge region or portion 36 extending to the 'fi'an'ge portions Hi. There is thus provided the primary work rest section in the form of an adjustment seat portion or base.
A air of angle plates have downwardly extendingwings 31 from outwardly-extendin plate portion 38. The portions 38 are adapted to ride on the edge portions 36 with the wings ai -oven lapping a portion of the inner face of the slots 35. The upper portions of the portions 38 away from the edge portions 36 provide a pivot bearing 39 alignment feature of this secondary work rest section.
A pair of arc flanges 40 extend downward away from top connecting or cross portion 4|. This tertiary section of the Work rest is hinge mounted on the bearing 39. The are flanges or wings 40 ride on the side of the slots 35 opposite from the overlap 37. The flanges 40 have are clearance 42 from the pivot bearing 39. Offsets or lugs 31' from the plate 31 ride in the slots 35 and hold the intermediate or secondary section plate 31 from tilting. Radially outward from the clearance 42, there are arc slots 43 in the wings 40.
A head 44, on a pin 45 as a threaded extension or bolt, is toward the wheel 24 from the wings 31. From the head 44, the threaded portion 45 of the bolt extends thru an opening in the wing 37 and the slot 35, as well as on thru the slot 43. A nut 41 may shift a washer 4'1" to position astride the slot 35 and in such clamp assembly hold the secondary section at an adjusted Dosition with the primary section, leaving the threaded extension 45 protruding outward thru and clear of the slot 43. A clamp washer 45 of central clearance as to the nut 41' and the Washer 4'1", may be thrust along over the bolt portion 45 to contact the wing 40 having the slot 43. A wing nut 41 on the threaded portion 45 is now adjusted to force the washer 4B firmly against the wing 40. There is thus effected a holding of the tertiary work rest section at adjusted angle as to the wheel 24 and so fixed thru the intermediate and primary work rest sections.
It is thus seen that thru loosening of the wing nuts 41, as aligned transversely of the wheel, or parallel to the shaft 28, there may be a rocking of the tertiary work rest 40, 4|, to take a desired angle relatively to the working face of the Wheel 24, for the convenience of the operator in efficiently directing the work to be engaged by the wheel 24. While the bolts 44, 45, are common for this rocking adjustment, and for the radial slide adjustment, which latter is between the primary and secondary sections, this latter setting or adjustment is not disturbed in the relocation of the tertiary work rest 49, 41. However, in order to adjust the radial range of the secondary and tertiary sections relatively to the wheel 24, there is the release of the tertiary section from the secondary section to expose the nuts 41 to access for loosening and the shifting of the secondary section along the slots 35, with a retightening of the nuts 41. In the sequence of operations, it is now in order to complete the work rest assembly of its multi-sections b setting the wing nuts 41 to fix the tertiary section with the now reset primary and secondary sections.
An arrow 48 indicates the direction of rotation of the abrasive element 24, herein shown as clockwise (Fig. 1). This means that the friction driving roller 23 has a counterclockwise direction of rotation. The firm driving relation of the roller 23 on the periphery of the element 24 seems to reduce the liquid to a film condition of spreading and minimizes the tendency to have any liquid thrown therefrom toward the operator. A
down direction reach is indicated by an arrow 49 for the belt 12, which in conjunction with the spring 25 establishes a practical holding-in or driving relation for the roller 23 with the element 24.
This case is a division of Serial No. 43,393, filed August 10, 1948, which has developed into U. S. Patent No. 2,537,394 January 9, 1951.
What is claimed and it is desired to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In an abrasive wheel assembly having a bearing for the wheel and a support for the bearing, a tool rest device comprising: a wheel shield means rising from the support, said means including an inclined edge and parallel thereto a slot toward the bearing, plate means adapted to seat on said edge with an angular portion therefrom extending along the inner face of the shield means across the slot, said plate locating a bearing parallel to the wheel bearin axis, a work rest mounted in the plate-meansprovided bearing, said rest having flanges depending against the outer face of the shield means and having an arc slot aligned With the plate means bearing, and a clamp pin through the plate means angular portion, the shield means inclined slot and the flange arc slot, adapted to set the work rest at different angles relative to the plate means and at difi'erent positions along the inclined slot.
2. In a Work treating wheel assembly having a bearing for the wheel and a support for the bearing, and means for adjusting said bearing relative to said support, a tool rest device comprising: a housing portion fixed to said support and extending about a portion of said wheel said portion having an edge region parallel to a radius of said wheel from said bearing, slot means parallel to said edge region in forming one work rest section, another work rest section overlapping said slot means, and bolt connection means at said overlap and slot means providing adjustment of said another work rest section along said edge region toward the wheel to the location of the wheel from adjustment of the bearing relatively to the support.
3. In an abrasive wheel assembly having a rest adjacent the grinding surface of said wheel for articles to be abraded, said rest comprising: a shield adjacent the side of said Wheel and having a longitudinal slot extending substantially inwardly from said grinding surface permitting adjustment to compensate for wear of the abrading surface of said wheel, a hinge bracket, a bolt and nut extending through said slot and hinge bracket for adjustably clamping said hinge bracket in a preselected position along said slot, a tiltable table article support portion pivotally hinged on said bracket, said table having a flange with a slot arcuate to the axis of said hinge and straddling said bolt and nut, and clamp washer and second nut means on said bolt for adjustably clamping said table in a preselected angular position about said hinge axis.
