Description
unirnn strains PATENTOFFJ" Specification of Letters Patent No. 26,348, dated December, 6, 1859.l i
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, A. B. FURBEE, of Dresden, in the county of Muskingum and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Corn-Crib; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making y a part of this specification, in which- Figure l, is a side elevation of my invenn tion. Fig. 2, is a transverse vertical section of ditto, taken in the line y, y, Fig. l. Fig. 3, is a longitudinal vertical section of ditto taken in the line m, Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several gures.
The object of this invention is to obtain a crib that cannot be entered by rats, mice and like vermin, and also one from which the corn can be taken as desired Jfor use with the greatest facility. i e
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention I will proceed to describe it.
A, represents posts on which the criblrests. These posts are of wood and slightly in clincd as usual as shown plainly in Fig. 2. On the top of the posts A, sills a, are placed and the framing of the crib`B, is built there on. The body of the crib may be constructed in the usual form, the sides and ends provided with or formed of slats laced a suitable distance apart. There is this difference however in the construction of my crib-I place the doors b, in the roof instead. of at the ends as hitherto, one small door o, may be placed in one end in orderfto` afford one entrance in that way for the purpose of cleaning, repairing etc. .e
Each post A, is covered with sheet metal (l, of a smooth kind, the metal extendingfentirely around the posts as shown `in all the igures. Sheetbrass would probably be a good material. Tinnedplate would answer but it would not be as durable as Vthe brass. This covering of the posts A, with' sheet metal efectually prevents animals from climbing the posts and obtaining an entrance into the crib. y
The sill a, at one side of the crib is deeper than the one at thehopposite'side ide that the flooring C, mayV be inclined,see;Jfig.1` 2. The flooring may beiformedloff lats a suitable space being allowed between and to the outer side of thecrib at its lowe` end in line with thedepressed `or loweryend of the flooring boxes or trunks D, ar`eplaced longitudinally, said "trunks y or boxes municating withmtheinterior of thelcrib"` B by openings f, which `entend alongthewhole` length of the` criblatfone sidejust aboveits.. sill. The trunks or boxes` D, are provid with lids g,whichthavefan inclined positie in consequence-of being attached to the "side of the crib some distanceabove the trunkslor y boxes, as shown plainly in 2. Thisfin clined position of the lids relativelylfwith the trunks or boxes admitfoffthesforme closing by their owngravity "and ret ni themselves in a closed position. e .13V y if The corn as it isrequiredfor use is takei from the trunks.orjboXesf` D, saidbloxesbm ing replenished asthe corn isremoved fr them by the superincumbent weightfofth corn in the bodyoftheferibgthe` inclined',` flooring C, permitting `such result. Bywthisfi 1* arrangement it will `be seen thatthejacrib will be kept closed atall tinies,`for there are e no doors to be leuftnopenwto admit `vferfn'iin. The crib is iilled through` thefdoors infthej roof and they are of course not required to .1 be open Vonly during the time of harvestw` The small door c, is usedyonly as `the grain x gets low in the crib `and `to facilitateclean`` mg. f Q
Having thus described my inventionwhat I claim as new and desire to secure by` Let ters Patent, is,--` N Vl .l u ffl l. The arrangement H ofl the inclined iloor-` f ing C, with the trunksorboxes `D,`"substa`n tially as and forthe purposeset forth. 2. I also claim covering the posts A, the crib with sheet metal d, when said post are usedin connectionwitha cribprovided l with an inclined flooringG,-andj`trunks or boxes D, as and for the purpose specified.
