I WASHING MACHINE. I i Patented Aug. 29, 1882,

NITED STATES PATENT QFF CE,
ELI H. CHAPMAN, OF WETMORE, KANSAS.
WASHING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 263,480, dated August 29, 1882.
Application filed October 10, 1881. Renewed June 29, 1882. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, E. H. CHAPMAN, a citizen ofthe United States, and aresident of Wetmore, in the county of Nemaha and State of Kansas, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in VVashing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a vertical longitudinal section of my invention, and Fig. 2 is a plan view.
This invention has relation to washing-machines; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of a rectangular box having side guides with triangular spaces at their lower ends, pivoted rubbers on a shaft, the ends of which work in the guides at the sides of the box, the arms of the machine embodying the rubbers forming pounders, rollers for assisting the rubbers, and a lever for operating them when the machine is in use and forming a rest for them when they have been lifted from the box, as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the sud s-box, provided at each side, about midway of the box, with strips 0 G, which form vertical ways D D and triangular spacesE E at the lower ends of said ways D. Arms F F are provided with slats G G in their outer ends to form the rubbers H, the lower slat, H, being wider than the others. The outer ends of the arms F F incline upwardly and inwardly to leave the greatest space between the tops of the rubbers and the ends of the suds-box. The arms F F are pivoted on a shaft, I, the ends of which enter the guides or ways D D. The shaftI is passed through the lower ends of two bars, J J, at the upper ends of which the lever K is pivoted, its fulcrum being between the studs L at the rear end of the box A. The arms F F rest upon rollers N N in the box, which form fulcra for them and lessen the friction.
The box A may have vertical rubbing-boardsto enable them to perform a'scooping motion in the bottom of the box, in order to not permit the clothes in the bottom to lie untouched. The arms F F are so coupled as to form a very strong hinge, and at the same time overlap each other so as to prevent lateral motion. It will be seen that the shaft I forms the journals for the arms F F, and also guide-pins in the ways D D.
When it is desired to use the box Afor rinsing purposes or to clean it the rubbers may be lifted from the box by swingingthe lever over until its power end touches the floor, the rubbers resting on the top rear end of the box in an easy and safe position.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a washing-machine, the suds-box A, having the strips G O at its sides forming the ways D D, and the triangular spaces E E, in combination with the rubbers H H, constructed as described, and the lever K, bars J, and rollers N N, substantially as and for thepurposes specified.
In testimony that I claim 'the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
- ELI H. CHAPMAN.
