UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
JACOB BLOOMER, OF BOISE CI'IY, IDAHO TERRITORY.
Fl RE-ESCAPE.
SPECIFICATION forming partI of Letters Patent No. 263,468, dated August 29, 1882.
Application filed April 5, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JACOB BLOOMEE, of Boise City, in the county of Ada and Territory of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in FireEscapes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention has for its object to provide a simple, durable, inexpensive, and eiicient means for aiding escape in case of lire.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective View, Fig. 2 alongitudinal sectional view, Fig. 3 a transverse sectional view, and Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view, of the bell and hook.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A designates a box or case of suitable construction having a horizontal ange, B, at its bottom, by which it may be secured to the window-sill or any other convenient place.
C is a longitudinal shaft or drum journaled in bearings D D in the ends EE of the casing, and provided at one end with an operating crank or handle, F, having a ratchet, Gr, engaged by a pawl, H, on the end of the box.
I is a longitudinal slot in the lfront ofthe box or casin g.
J designates a stout cord, wire, or rope secured to and wound around the drum C. Its front end, K, passes through the slot I, and has secured to it a bell or gong, L, of some white metal, so as to be readily seen at night, and under this a hook or other securing device, IVI.
The operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood. In case of re the cord or rope is let down, the bell striking the pavement and sounding, so that at night, when it is too dark to see the cord, its position can thus be detected. A rope, ropeladder, or other means of escape, or hose, 8vo., is then fixed to the hook and hauled up to the inmatesof the building byopcratlngthecrank. The ladder or other means of escape may then be'secured to a hook or ring inside the building and the inmates descend safely to the ground.
I am aware of patent to Gregory, No. 141,269, which shows a casing having a drum carrying a cord provided with a metallic ball which would sound on striking the pavement, and I claim no part of this invention, my claim being for my own improved construction and arrangement of parts. a
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 'lhe combination, with the box or casing A, provided with longitudinal slot I in its front, and having horizontal ange B at its bottom and longitudinal shaft or drum C jonrnaled in bearings D D in its ends, and provided with operating crank or handle F, having ratchet G, engaged by a pawl, H, of the cord J, or its equivalent, secured to and wrapped around shaft C, its free end passing through slot I, and having a bell or gong L, under which is arranged a hook, M, all arranged and operating substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aflxed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JACOB BLOOMER. Witnesses:
J. R. LITTELL, C. K. ALLEN.
