Be it known that I, J OHN COOPER, of Mount Vernon, in the county of Knox and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in the Mode of Giling the Boxes of Vertical Sugar-Mill Rollers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and complete description of the con struction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure l, is an elevation of one roller and boxes, Fig. 2 is a Vertical section of the same, Fig. 3, is a top view of theupper box, Fig. 4 is a top view of the upper head of the roller, upon the line X X in Fig. 2, and Fig. 5, is a cross section in the line Y Yin Fig. 2.

Sorghum, and other sugar mills, are usually constructed with vertical cylinders, such being much preferred to those that are horizontal, for obvious reasons, the chief of which, are, cheapness of construction, and their ready adaptation to horse or mule power.` But a great difficulty has hitherto been experienced in keeping the journals properly lubricated with oil, without the waste o-il becoming mixed with the juice of the cane, and thus injuring the flavor of the syrup. y

The nature of my invention relates, therefore, to the construction and arrangement of devices, by which this difliculty is entirely obviated. In setting forth the nature of my invention, I have represented but one roller, there being three generally used, but this one fully illustrates my invention.

A, represents the body of the roller, and B the shaft that passes through the center.

In Fig. 2, C C represent the heads of the cylinders or rollers. These may be separate, or cast solid with the cylinder. y
