4 Claims.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in construction tools and the primary object of the present invention is to provide a tool for straight edging, plumbing and leveling.
Another important object of the present invention is to provide a straight edge and level tool involving a channel shaped member of bendable material that is bent to provide a scriber guide and level bubble supporting flange void of sharp, harmful edges.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a straight edge and level tool that is composed of relatively few parts which are quickly and readily assembled or disassembled in a convenient manner and which parts are relatively light and arranged for a balanced tool.
A still further aim of the present invention is to provide a tool of the aforementioned character that is simple and practical in construction, strong and reliable in use, small and compact in structure, inexpensive to manufacture, assemble and repair, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the present invention;
Figure 2 is a plane view of Figure 1, and,
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view taken substantially on the plane of section line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration, there is disclosed a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the numeral l represents an initially channel shaped member of bendable material having upper and lower flanges l2 and I4 that are joined by a web l6.
The flange I2 is bent longitudinally intermediate its inner and outer longitudinal edges, as at l8, to provide a portion 20 that parallels the web [6 and which is disposed perpendicular to flange [2. The lower part 22 of portion 20 is folded back upon the upper part of portion 20 to form a reinforced angulated extension of flange l2, void of sharp exposed edges.
Lower flange I4 is initially wider than flange l2 and flange I4 is bent longitudinally closer to its edge joined with web l6 than the outer free edge 24 of flange M, as at 26, to form a forwardly extending portion 28 that is juxtaposed with flange M and which projects laterally from the opposite side of web l6 than flanges l2 and I4.
Portion 28 is provided with longitudinally spaced apertures 30 that accommodate headed fasteners 32. Fasteners 32 are threadingly received in threaded apertures 34 in an elongated straight edge element or strip 35. Both longitudinal edges 38 and 40 of the strip 36 are beveled with the outer extremity of edge 40 being flush with part 20 and lying in a plane through the outer face of part 20 and parallel to web 16.
Web I6 is provided with a plurality of longitudinally spaced weight reducing openings 42. The Web is is also provided with a pair of transverse openings 44 and 46 that extend upwardly from the flange I4 to accommodate level bubble units 48 and 50. The bubble tube 52 of unit 48 is disposed perpendicular to the bubble 54 of unit 50.
The bases 56 are undercut, as at 58, to rest against portion 24 and the, upper face of flange I 4, and fasteners 60 extend upwardly through counter sunken apertures 62 in the strip 36, apertures 64 in theportion 28 and threaded apertures 66 in the bases 56.
In practical use of the present invention, the surface formed by flange l2 will constitute a guide surface for a scriber and the edges 38 and 40 will likewise constitute guide surfaces for a scriber, whereby horizontal and vertical lines may be applied to a suitable surface.
The various bends of the channel member In and the location of the level bubbles 48 and 50 will provide proper balance for the tool, so that the same may be conveniently handled.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A straight edge and level combination tool, said tool comprising an elongated channel having a pair of spaced flanges and a web connecting the flanges, one of said flanges being bent upon itself to provide a portion extending from the opposite side of the web than said flanges, an elongated rigid strip secured to said portion; and level bubbles secured to said portion.
2. A straight edge and level combination tool, said tool comprising an elongated channel having a pair of spaced flanges and a web connecting the flanges, one of said flanges being bent upon itself to provide a portion extending from the opposite side of the web than said flanges, an elongated rigid strip secured to said portion, said web having a pair of openings therein extending to said portion, and level bubbles positioned in the openings and secured to said portion.
3. A combination straight edge and level tool comprising an elongated channel shaped memher having upper and lower flanges and a web joinin said flanges, said upper flange being bent longitudinally intermediate its inner and outer edges to form relatively perpendicular portions one of which is disposed perpendicular to the web and the other of which parallels the web, said portion disposed parallel to said web being folded upon itself, said lower flange being wider than said upper flange and being bent upon itself to include a portion that extends outwardly from the opposite side of the web'than'said fianges',-an elongated rigid strip removably secured to the undersurface of the portion of said lower flange, said web having spaced openings therein extending upwardly from the lower flange, and' level bubble units secured to the lower flange and extending into the openings.
4 4. The combination of claim 3 wherein said strip includes a pair of spaced parallel longitudinal edges one of which is flush with the portion of said upper flange that parallels the web.
