Description

March 31, 1953 E. H. BLATTNER ET AL COMBINED BOLSTER CENTER FILLER AND REAR DRAFT we UNIT Filed July 7, 1950 FIG. 1
FIG. 2
R Inventors:
Emil H. BIOH ner Glenn E Couch YWQ FIG.
their Attorney draft lug of a pair may be subjected to a greater bufling load than its companion draft lug and this unequal load is then, ordinarily, transmitted in unequal magnitude to the respective sill flanges 5. This invention is such that irrespective of the unequal or unbalanced loads which may be imparted to the respective forward walls, both flanges of the center sill will receive the loads in equal force. Toward the accomplishment of this function, each vertical inner extremity of a forward wall or draft lug is integgrally joined with a related extremity of a rib or intermediate, load transmitting wall [3. Each rib is directed preferably vertically for at least the full height of the side walls and is spaced inwardly of the unit from a companion, related or adjacent side wall. As clearly illustrated, particularly in Figure 1 of the drawings, the ribbing follows, for a given direction, the periphery of the bottomwall bifurcation and as such may be considered as starting from the inner extremities of the draft lugs as integral parts thereof and then being directed diagonally or transversely of the unit at an oblique or acute angle to the side walls. The ribbing forms an X design when considered in plan and therefore the ribs merge into one another when they cross as at [4 on what might be considered as the longitudinal center line of the unit as designated by the diagrammatic line marked AA on Figure 1 only of the drawings. This CIOSSiIlg of the ribs is preferably at the transverse center of the unit so that each rib is a substantial counterpart of the other rib. Continuing from a crossin of the ribs, each rib is directed in a substantially straight, however diagonal, line toward an extended vertical longitudinal plane of an opposed side wall, or stated in another manner, each rib extends from near one side wall to a plane of the other side wall where it terminates in an auxiliary side wall I5. Each auxiliary side wall is in longitudinal alignment with a side wall and as such is arranged to be in full surface bearing relation with the sill side flange inwardly of the center sill. It will be noted, therefore, that any load imposed on a particular draft lug will be transmitted to one sill side flange by a companion unit side wall and also to the other sill side flange by a companion rib.
In order to tie the ribbing together adjacent lower extremities thereof and particularly that port-ion thereof which grows out of the crossing toward the rear extremity of the unit, the bottom wall or base plate is extended rearwardly and horizontally as at It for this purpose. Because it is believed not absolutely essential to continue the bottom wall entirely transversely of the unit to the extreme rear end 3 thereof, the base plate at this location is cut away or omitted as at I! thus causin the formation of gussets [8 to strengthen or reinforce the auxiliary side walls and this omission also functions in lightening the unit-which is a desirable feature in units of "the present type.
So as to properly reinforce the ribbing against shocks to which it will be subjected in service, a diagonally arranged brace or stiffening wall 19 is spaced a predetermined distance in back of each draft lug. Each brace desirably upstands vertically from the bed plate as an integral part thereof but for only a distance approximating one-half the height of the side wall and rib in that area. As previously stated the brace extends diagonally of the unit and is interposed between and forms a part of a related rib and 4 side wall so as to be capable of conveying lateral component forces between a rib and its related side wall. For the same purpose as that above set forth, each rib in the rear of the crossing is also provided with a tie bar or plate 20 which extends from its juncture with the rib in a direction outwardly, diagonally or forwardly of the unit to merge with a rear extremity of an opposed side wall as at 21. A portion of each tie bar and a portion of each related rib are extended vertically or upwardly beyond the upper limits of the ribs and side walls to form an angle shaped crown or comb 22 which terminates preferably short of the center sill top web where it is joined to the top web by means of welds 23; see particularly Figures 2, 3 and 4. These crowns or combs not only assist in a proper positioning of the unit vertically within the center sill but also function as a bond or connecting medium between the unit and center sill about the latter of which more will be contained hereinafter.
As will be understood this unit is disposed in a car body at a location Of the body bolster and the car body is connected to a suitable truck (not shown) at this same location through the medium of a king pin (not shown). For the accommodation of the king pin, the unit is provided with a post or cylindrical sleeve 24 which stands upright from the bed plate as an integral part thereof. The post is located on the longitudinal center line of the unit or in longitudinal align ment with the rib crossing to be centrally located transversely of the unit. Because the post is subjected to service horizontal loads this post is reinforced, longitudinally, by aligned triangular knee braces 25 which merge with the base plate. For the same reason the post is joined to the ribbing by vertical, transversely directed tie walls 25. From an inspection of Figures 2 and 4 it will be noted that the post has a height equal to only a part of the height of the side walls and ribbing and for this reason, as well as presenting an adequate tie, the portion of each tie wall merging with the post is for a height equal to that of the post and the portion of the tie wall merging with a related rib is for a height equal to the main part of the rib. In order to further reinforce this area of the unit the bottom plate is extended as at 2'! outwardly or laterally of the unit beyond the ribs but preferably terminated short of a meeting with the sill side flanges. These portions 21 of the bottom wall are further joined to the ribbing by vertical backup walls 28 which desirably are in transverse alignment with the tie walls and therefore, the post is not only suitably reinforced but the entire area of the unit at this location presents a rugged, skeletonized component.
Various means may be employed to anchor the unit to the center sill and while the conventional means such as rivets (not shown) may be employed it is preferred to follow the teachings outlined in the copending application of Emil H. Blattner, Serial No. 93,800, filed May l7, 1949. This type of fastening may, for convenience, be classified as a plu weld but actually it goes far beyond what this simple classification implies. Both the side wall and the auxiliary side walls of the unit are additionally or inwardly thickened in local, vertically directed, longitudinally spaced areas by pads 29. Vertically arranged in each area are a plurality of drillings 30 which extend only partially into the pads and preferably do not project entirely therethrough. The center sill side flange is provided with a plurality of holes 3 F whiclr may; be of the samesize or slightly larger im-diam eter than thedrillingsy and with whichthe heles are in axial alignment- The holes-anddrillings arefilled completely: with welds 32 -andathusthe -unit is' not' only rfirmly- 5 attached-to the center -sill' but in addition all of the holding- -means are subj ected only'" to shear forcesth'erebyincorporatingan ideal condition in the'yrelationshipa To-* further bind the unit to" thecenter sill, an outer vertical edge-of each draft -lug "is-so formed tc -present*a-' triangularpocket =with the adjacent' 'sill side flange and-this pocket functionsas' a depository for a weld '33:
