LOCKING HANDLE FOR RECEPTACLE COVERS Filed Sept. 19, 1950 Inventor Char/es C. Bidd/ecambe 1 UNITED STAT Patented Mar. 24, 1953 7 LOCKING HANDLE FOR RECEPTACLE COVERS Charles 0. Biddlecombe, North Valley Stream, N. Y.
Application September 19, 1950, Serial N 0. 185,540
1 Claim.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in looking devices for the covers of trash and garbage can and other receptacles and more particularly to a locking handle for the cover.
An important object of the invention is to provide a pair of locking arms slidably carried at diametrically opposite sides of a cover and with their outer ends engageable under the beading of a receptacle on which the cover is placed and providing the cover with a pivoted handle connected to the locking arms to slide the latter into and out of locking position.
Another object of the invention is to provide the handle with a catch engageable with one of the locking arms to lock the handle and arms in locked position.
A still further object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is eflicient and reliable in operation, strong and durable, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, references being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view;
Figure 2 is an enlarged transverse sectional view taken on the line 2--2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a top plan view showing the handle in locked position, and
Figure 4 is a similar view showing the handle in locked position.
Referring now to the drawing in detail wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates a cover for a receptacle 6, such as a trash or garbage can, the cover including a skirt portion 1 positioned outwardly of the receptacle and over a beading 8 at the upper edge of the receptacle.
A handle 9 of strap metal is formed at one end with a leg 10 having an inwardly projecting flange ll pivotally or swingably connected to the top of the cover 5 by means of a rivet or similar fastening device, as at l2. The leg l supports the handle 9 in a raised position above the cover and the other end l3 of the handle is bent downwardly and is formed with a groove or lip l4 functioning as a catch.
The pair of locking arms [5 and I8 are slidable in guides 11 secured to the top of cover 5 and with the arms positioned radially with respect to the pivot l2 of the handle and extending toward diametrically opposite sides of the cover. The outer ends of arms 15 and I6 are formed with inwardly curved hooks or detents l8 slidable inwardly through openings [9 in skirt 1 of the cover 5 to engage under the beading 8 of the receptacle.
The inner ends of arms l5 and I6 are formed with inclined portions 20 and 2| respectively, positioned parallel to each other, and with end 261 pivoted on a rivet or the like 22 attached to flange H inwardly of pivot l2 and end 2| of arm I6 is similarly pivoted to flange II by means of a rivet or the like 23 positioned outwardly with respect to pivot l2.
In the operation of the device handle 9 is pivoted or rotated on its pivot or rivet l2 whereby to slide arms I5 and I6 inwardly or outwardly on top of cover 5. By turning handle 9 in a direction to slide arms l5 and I6 outwardly the hooks It at the outer end of the arms will be moved outwardly from beading 8 to unlock the cover from the receptacle 6 and the handle 9 may then be used to lift the cover from the receptacle.
By turning handle 9 in an opposite direction hooks 18 will slide inwardly under beading 8 to lock the cover to the receptacle.
The locking arms 15 and I8 are preferably constructed of a metal rod having sufficient resiliency whereby rod [6 may be engaged by catch M to lock the handle 9 from swinging or pivotal movement, the handle 9 being positioned at an angle with respect to flange ll so that the catch M will hold the arms l5 and [6 in a locked position with respect to heading 8. In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention, the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claim.
