.- severed into shorter lengths by the cylinder.
Heretofore considerable difiiculty has been experienced inthose instances wherein rotary cut off means have been utilized for severing continuous lengths of sheet material, such as paper, into shorter lengths orsheets, and particularly when the rotational speed of the cut off cylinder has been relatively high. When paper, in particu1ar,.is severed under such conditions, there is a pronounced tendency for the forward edge of the sheet next to be severed from the continuous web to adhere to the outer periphery of the cylinder, rearwardly of the cutting blade, thereby elevating. or lifting said forward edge. Thislifting of the forward edge or" the sheet next to be severed precludes its proper discharge upon, and registry with the last severed sheet, and often results in a bunching up of severed sheets adjacent the cut off cylinder. Y
A further object of the invention is .to provide means for effectively eliminating the tendency of the forward edgeof the sheet next to be severed from a continuous roll to lift or tend to adhere to the outer periphery of the blade cylinder.
Still a further object of the invention is to provide simple, inexpensive, yet highly eflicient means 'ior positively deflectin the forward portions of the sheet next to be severed from a continuous web downwardly toward and onto the previously severed sheet, thereby facilitating high speed operations of the cut off blade cylinder with precise registry of the severed sheets.
These and other objects are attained by the means described herein andas' disclosed in the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a side elevational View of a cut off blade cylinder embodying the teachings of the present invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross sectional view on line 2-.-2 of Fig. 1, the cut ofi blade cylinder being shown in the association with other portions of a typical cut off machine assembly and with the cut offblade in position at the: moment of cut off.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing the relationship of the cut off cylinder after cut off.

With particular reference now to Fig. 1, them].- meral I0 denotes generally a cut oil cylinder such as used in the printing industry, said cylinder including a transversely extending blade I2 having a cutting edge I4 projecting outwardly beyond the outer periphery l 6 of the cylinder.
As best illustrated in Fig. 2, the cutting edge M of blade I2 is adapted to make-kissing contact with the cutting edge of a fixed blade l8 for there.- by severing a continuous web 20 into a plurality of individual sheets22, which sheets will be deposited in echelon relationship upon a suitable support 24 thence onto the upper reach 26 of an endless conveyor denoted generally by the numeral 28.
The present invention is neither 'directed'to nor concerned with the specific structural details of the cylinder or its blade, these devices being old and well known to the art.
The present invention is directed to the provision of simple, highly effective means for inducing a steady flow or current of air for positively deflecting the free outer, or leadin edge 40 of the next sheet to be severed from web 22: downwardly, that is, away from cylinder l0 and toward the upper face of the preceding sheet severed by blade I2 on the preceding revolution of the cylinder.
Such means may comprise a plurality of laterally spaced conduits or passageways 42 each having an inlet endv 44 in the periphery of the cylinder immediately forwardly of bladev I2, and an outlet port 46 in the cylinder periphery adjacent the rear end 62 of blade l2. Such a conduit'or passageway may be provided in the body of cylinder l!) by a milling or any other conventional operation.
Suitable means are provided immediately in advance of the outer or forward end 50 of blade I2 fOr scooping air into conduit 42 incident to rotation of cylinder l0.
As illustrated in Figs. 2, 3 and 5, such means may comprise an elongate panel 52 mounted between adjacent portions of cylinder I0 and rear face 54 of the blade, wherein the term rear face amount less than the amount by which cutting edge IA of the blade projects from periphery 16.
If desired, panel 52 may be securely though releasably anchored by means of a plurality of bolts 60 which extend through suitable apertures in blade l2 for engaging tapped holes provided in cylinder It. It will be noted that the same means are thus utilized for anchoring panel 52 as are utilized to mount blade l2 relative to the cylinder.
In the preferred embodiment lot the invention discharge ports'46 are disposed immediately adjacent inner or rear end 62 of blade I2 for thereby dischargin the air scooped into conduit-542. as close to blade 12 as possible.
With reference now to Fig, 3, it will beobserved that a current of air denoted-generally:byrthe headed arrows 70 will enter conduitfi. .at'inlet 34, and be discharged via outlet 46, thereby positively deflecting the leading endttl ofithe-next sheetto be severed from web 20 downwardly toward the upper surface of the previously severedislieetifl.
