UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
PORTER B. SPEER, or MUSOATINE, IOWA.
OH I MNEY-TOP'.
SPECIFICATIOfi forming part of Letters Patent No. 263,235, dated August 22, 1882. Application filed January 24, 1882. (No model.)
a To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, PORTER B. SPEER, of the city and county of Muscatine, in the State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Im- 5 provement in Chimney-Tops, which improvement is fully set forth in the following speciflcation and accompanyingdrawings, which latter represent the chimney-top complete, so far as is necessary to fully illustrate myinvention.
to My invention relates to chimney-tops; and
it consists of a pipe adapted to-be adjusted on the top of a flue, and provided with a conicshape cap and a draft-opening immediately below the cap, in combination with a drum ad- 15 justed over and around the upper portion of the pipe, the drum being provided with a conic-shape cap and a draft-opening immediately below the cap, and having its middle portion enlarged to allow the downward currents 20 of air to be deflected outwardly away from the mouth of the pipe, as hereinafter fully described.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective,
showing the drum adjusted on the pipe. Fig.
2 2 is a vertical section of the same.
A is the pipe, adapted to be placed and held upon the top of a flue, and is provided with a conic-shape cap, D, and a. draft-opening, b, immediately below the cap.
0 B is the drum, havingits middle portion enlarged, as shown at c, and is provided with a conic-shape cap, 0, and a draft-opening, 01, immediately below the cap, and is adjusted and supported over and around the pipe, as shown The smoke escapes from the flue through the opening b into the drum, and, when not checked by downward current of "air, escapes from the drum through the opening'd. Downward currents of air entering the drum through the opening (I strike the inclined sides of the cap D and are deflected outwardly into the enlarged portion of the rents of air to be deflected outwardly by the inclined sides of the cap D, and that by that outward deflection the downward air-currents are thrown near the walls of the drum away from the draft-opening in the pipe, allowing space immediately around that draft-opening for the smoke to escape freely from the pipe and to be carried away by the air-currents, thus avoiding the usual liability of having the smoke checked and forced down the pipe and flue.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the pipe A, having the conic cap or deflector D, closed at the top, and the draft-opening b immediately below the cap, of the drum B, extended above the cap D, andhavin g the enlarged portion 0, extended below the opening I), and. having above thedrum the conic deflector 0, closed at the top, and the draft-opening d immediately below the deflector C, substantially as and for the purposes described. I
PORTER B. SHEER.
