G. FANTON] ADJUSTABLE GUNSTOCK 2 SHEETS-SHEET 2 Filed NOV- 12, 1949 invent r:
Giannini F'ani'oni Patented Mar. 17, 1953 ADJUSTABLE GUNSTOCK Giovanni Fantoni, Bresciafltaly, assignor to S- cieta Italiana Ernesto Brcda per Costruzioni Meccaniche, Milan, Italy, a firm Application November 12, 1949, Serial No. 126,767 In Italy November 16, 1948 2 Claims.
It is the object of the present invention to provide a hunting gun, the butt of which may be orientated at will with respect to the pointing line by a simple manually-made adjustment.
It is well known that the butt of the conventional hunting gun has its axis deviated in both the horizontal and vertical senses with respect to the pointing line in order to permit the shooter easily to collimate the said pointing line with his eye while getting safe rest for the butt on his shoulder. It is also well known that every shooter ought to use a rifle having determined characteristics as to the orientation of the butt, in accordance with the body of the shooter himself. The present invention aims at embodying with the rifle a device that permits the butt to be given a definite orientation as desired, within definite limits, and in such a manner that the orientating operation may be very simple and easy to be performed by the shooter.
In the accompanying drawings there are i1- lustrated merely by way of example two embodiments of the invention, viz:
Fig. 1 is a part longitudinal section, part side elevation of a gun made according to one embodiment of this invention;
Fig. 2 is a plan view, partly in section of this Fig. 3 is a part side elevation, part longitudinal section of a gun made according to another embodiment of the invention;
Fig. 4 is a plan view, partially in section, of the gun of Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a section along the line 5-5 of Fig. 3.
In Figures 1 and 2, the rod 2 for fastening the butt 3 to the stock 6 is pivoted about the point C of the stock 6 by means of a ball joint 5. The rear end of the stock is shaped with a convex spherical surface Ba. and serves as a seat for the correspondingly shaped front face 1a of a washer 7 which surrounds the rod 2 and which is interposed between the stock 6 and the butt 3. The nut 8 and counternut 9, which are screwed on a threaded portion of the rod 2 press the washer 1 against the stock 6 and lock the said rod 2 in the desired position. The butt 3 will then be easily assembled on the rod 2 by means of the orientating pin ID and the fastening screw 4.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in Figs. 3 to 5 inclusive, the fastening rod 2 passes through a conical hole in the butt 3' and is rigid- 'ly connected to the stock 6' of the gun. It has adjacent its front end a spherical enlargement 2a and at its rear end, besides the ordinary fastening screw 4, a portion of enlarged diameter,
on which there is mounted an eccentric block l5. Spherical enlargement 2a is mounted in a bushing I6 which in turn is mounted in the butt 3. The eccentric block I5 is rotatable about the said rod 2 by the aid of a recess 5a that may receive a suitable adjusting tool. The selected orientation can be obtained by rotating the eccentric block IS in its seat inside the butt in such a manner as to cause rotation of the said butt 3 guided in the bushing IS round the spherical enlargement 2a. Then the fastening screw 4 is tightened to lock the butt 3 on the stock by pressing the butt against the concave spherical surface Ila of the rear portion of the stock 6'.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention, and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is:
1. A hunting gun comprising a stock having a spherical seat at its rear end, a rod rigidly secured to said stock and projecting rearwardly therefrom beyond said seat, a butt having a conical bore therein to receive said rod, said butt having its front end spherically shaped complementary to said seat to engage in said seat and to have angular adjustment relative thereto, a cylindrical block rotatably mounted on said rod adjacent the rear end thereof for adjustment on said rod about the axis of said rod and having its periphery eccentric of the axis of said rod, a bearing member on said rod adjacent the front end thereof but behind said seat, said butt having a cylindrical seat therein engaging the peripheral surface of said block and a bearing portion engaging said bearing member, and means for forcing said butt against said spherical seat to lock said butt to said stock in any adjusted position.
2. A hunting gun comprising a stock having a spherical seat at its rear end, a rod rigidly secured to said stock and projecting rearwardly therefrom beyond said seat, a butt having a conical bore therein to receive said rod, said butt having its front end spherically shaped complementary to said seat to engage in said seat and to have angular adjustment relative thereto, a cylindrical block rotatably mounted on said rod adjacent the rear end thereof for adjustment on said rod about the axis of said rod and having its periphery eccentric of the axis of said rod, and its front end abutting against a shoulder on said butt, a spherical-surfaced bearing member secured to said rod adjacent the front end thereof but behind said spherical seat, said butt having a cylindrical seating portion in its bore en- 3 gaging the peripheral surface of said block, a bushing secured in said bore and engaging said spherical-surfaced bearing member and forming a bearing for said butt on said bearing member, and a member threaded on the rear end of said rod against the rear end of said cylindrical block to secure said butt to said stock in any adjusted position.
