"RACKCILI'PTFOHDISP A NG BAGS or POTATO CHIPS AND THELIKE John T. Maker, Berwick, Pat, assigli'fio Wis'e -Potato Chip GoJBer'wic'k, "Paa corporation in! Pennsylvania "Applicationbecember 15, 1950, "Serial 'No."20o,99a
- My invention relates toimprovements indis- 'play racks for "bags of potato chips, and other goods, the primary object in view being to pro- "vide for suspending a number of such ba'g s at "opposite sides of a rack in vertical rows -by bag- :imp'aling means securely holding the "bags in position for convenient easy grasping ahd detachment selectively by tearin'g the same loose from :the impaling mwea'n's with 'a minimum of damage to thebags in the tearing operation.
zAnother object is to provide 1 in such a Tack improved bag impaling 'clips designed for interlocking with supporting uprights of a 'f'rame to suspend the bags in'verticalopposite rows upon 'ODDOSitE SidGS ofthe frame'with'the bags in 69,011
claims are read with reference to the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification.
in said drawings: I Figure l is a view in perspective of my improved display-rackin the preferred embodiment thereof;
Figure 2 is --a --fragmentary'view in side elevationof the frame and one of the clips viewed from one side thereof and drawn to a larger scale;
Figure 3 is a similar View of the same viewed from the other side thereof;
Figure 4 is a view of the same with the frame and clips turned at an angle of 90;
Figure 5 is a View in perspective of one of the clips detached and drawn to a still larger scale;
Figure 6 is a view in transverse section taken on the line 6--6 of Figure 2;
Figure 7 is a similar view taken on the line 1---'! of Figure 2;
Figure 8 is a fragmentary view in side elevation of a modified embodiment of my invention;
Figure 9 is a view of the modified embodiment turned at an angle of 90; and
Figure 10 is a fragmentary enlarged view in bottom plan of the tip of the prong of the modified embodiment.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, according to the preferred embodiment of my invention illustrated in Figures 1 to 7, a rack is provided comprising a frame l of inverted U shape an'd fiat bar metal withside uprights 2 fix'ed ihanysuitable'manner toa base 3 of ien- *ta'ngul-ar skeleton'form andiia't bar metal, preferably. 'I'he uprights are provided with ver- --'-tica11y spaced and aligned conical sockets 4 for a purpose presently seen.
therein alternating in opposite sides of said uprights and 'c'o'mparati'vely shallow. A plurality of "clips 5 are "provided on each upright '2 for coacti'o'n withthe sockets 4'to suspend bags B of potato 'chip's thereon. The clip-s5 being alike, a description of one will-sufiice for all.
E'achclip S'isformed of comparatively heavy auge, resilient wire-bent upon itself and including a straight sha'nk "6, an upper end'hook 1 transverse to said shank, "and a lower end, right angled pron'g Bhavi'n'g a depending stem 9. The
hook J and'prong B 'are both located at one and the same side of the shank 6 withthe prongii shank-Why a right angled lateral bends i I. The
hook Textends upwardly from the shank 6 and lies in a plane oblique to the axis'of the shank'6 Obviously clips 5 are vertically spaced.
The clips '6 on "each upright a are attached thereto by springing the hooks 1 apart-so that the same may be slippedover the uprights 12 in straddling relation thereto and-partly surrounding the "same with the shanks 6 of successive clips 5 located on oppositesides of the uprights 2, the bends H of successive clips 5 extending across and straddling opposite edges of the uprights 2 to position the prongs of successive clips 5 alternately on opposite sides of the uprights from the shanks 6 for seating of the tips I!) in the sockets 4. The shanks 6 slant downwardly and outwardly of the uprights 2 and are sprung toward the uprights 2, thereby placing the prongs 8 under tension to maintain the same seated in the sockets 4 while also placing the hooks 1 under tension to frictionally bind the same against the sides of the uprights 2. When thus attached, the bends ll space the stems 9 of the prongs 8 from the sides of the uprights 2 to accommodate a bag 13 impaled on each tip I0 between the stem 9 of the prong and the uprights 2.
To load the described rack with bags B of potato chips, or other goods, the prongs 8 are pulled out of the sockets 4 by pulling on the stems 9 or by pressing on the shanks 6 at the juncture thereof with the bends I I, so that the sealed upper edges of the bags may be interposed between said prongs 8 and the uprights 2. Then, upon release of the stems 9, the shanks 6 will spring, or react, away from the uprights 2 to cause the tips ID to pierce and impale the bags B and the tips 10 to seat in the socket 4. To detach the bags B, it is merely necessary to pull the same downwardly and tear the upper edge of the same loose from the prongs 8, the tear, as will be apparent, being slight and notopening the bags sufliciently to permit escape of the contents thereof while at the same time facilitating further tearing of the bags to open the same.
In the modified embodiment of my invention illustrated in Figures 8, 9 and 10, the clips I2 coact with plan-e sides on the upright I3 to suspend the bags B, the sockets 4 or the preferred embodiment being eliminated to reduce the cost of manufacture. The clips 12 with the exceptions presently noted are like the'clip'si in construction and arrangement. that the tip M of each prong I5 is bevelled longitudinally, and laterally in opposite directions, to
provide a sharp point It and a longitudinal cutting edge Ii, the point engaging the facing side of the upright 13 when the shank [8 of the clip reacts away from the upright to pierce and impale the bag While the cutting edge ll cuts through the bag and thus facilitates the impaling operation. Another exception is that the clips 12 are arranged on each upright so that the tip IA of each prong underlies the hook 19 of the nextlower .clip 12 so that each hook l9 offsets the sealed upper edge of the bag B from the upright l3 to facilitate piercing of said edge by the tip i4 underlying the hook. Also each tip 14 in this embodiment acts to support the hook 19 of the next lower clip l2 if the latter should slip down.
The foregoing will, it is believed, sufiice to im part a clear understanding of my invention without further explanation.
'Manifes-tly, the invention, as described, is susceptible of modification, without departing from the inventive concept, and right is herein. reserved to such modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
-1. A clip for attachment to a bar of rectangular cross section to suspend an article comprising .a hook partly surrounding said bar, a shank having said hook on one end thereof and extending longitudinally along one side of the bar, and a right angled prong at the other end of said shank on the opposite side of the 'bar and having an 4 article impaling tip facing said bar, said shank having a lateral bend connecting the shank to the prong and straddling one edge of the bar to dispose said prong on said opposite side of the bar, said shank being resilient and reactive to bind the hook against said .bar and to engage the tip with '7 said :bar, whereby said bar and tip form jaws coacting' to impale-the article on said tip.
2. A clip according to claim 1, said prong including a. stem connecting the tip to said bend and being spaced from said opposite sides of the ,bar. by engagement of the tip with said bar to therefore accommodate a portion of the impaled article between said stem and bar.
One exception is.
rectangular cross section to each suspend an .article, each clip comprising a hook partly surrounding said bar, a shank having said hook on one end thereof and extending longitudinally ,alongone side of the bar, and a right angle prong at the other end of said-shank on the opposite -side of the bar and having an article impaling tip facing said bar, said shank having a lateral bend connecting the shank to the prong and straddling oneedge of the bar to dispose said prong on said opposite side of the bar, said shank being resilient and reactive to bind the hook on said bar and to engage the tip with said bar whereby said bar and-tip form laws coacting to impale the article on the tip, the hook of one clip being disposed between the bend and tip of the other clip to space the article impaled on the tip of the other clip from said bar to facilitate impaling action by the tip of said other clip.
