Description

^ :UNITED srnrns PATENT (nuru Specification of` Letters Patent No. 26,302, dated November f2 g To all 'whom it may concer/n:
Be it known that LJ. E. STURDY, of
Augusta, in the countyof Kennebec and `State of Maine, have` invented a `new `and Improved Planing Attachment for Shingle- Machines;and I do hereby declarethat the following is a full, clear, and` exact descrip` fio tion of the same, reference beinghad to the annexed drawings, making `a part of this specification, in which- Figure l, is a side view of ashingle machine with my invention applied to it. Fig.
` 2, a transverse vertical` section of ditto,
taken in the line :12, Fig. 3. "Fig 3, a plan or top view of ditto. i t Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several gures.
`This invention is designed to be attached to that class of shingle machines, in` which a circular` saw, and reciprocating bolt-carriage are used.
The object of the invention is to obtain a planing device that will operate automatically by the movement of the bolt carriage and perform the desired Work, to wit, the
planing of the face side of the shingles as tudinally on the framing A, and at right angles with the saw arbor B. l
E, is a bolt carriage which is simply a quadrilateral frame mounted on wheels a, the peripheries of which are grooved and work on the ways D, D.
On the carriage E, two transverse parallel bars b, b, are placed to which the guides 0, c, of a head block F, are attached. To this head block the usual jaws d, d, are attached and to each end of the head block a rack bar e, is attached by a pivot.` In the oute ends of the bars b, b, a shaft Gr, is placed,
said shaft having a tappet c", at each end, see dotted lines Figure 1, each tappet being provided with two teeth and the two tappets placed in reverse positions and directly under the racks e. On the shaft G, there is SHINGLE-MACHINE. i
placed `two @ainsi/QG /",:ini reverse"positions.1
and a ratchet g, is also placed lonsa-idwshaft,
said ratchet having a `pawl It, engaging with it intermittingly, whichipawlyisj attached :to 160" Q the front part of aleverwH,`1atzthe outer of the bolt carriagefsee Fig.` l; 1
To thenner sidefoftheboltfcarriage` two arms `or guide `barsiL-fIhare.attached {Each-gul@51; 65:
by pins at i :opposite .1 ends has a bar Ji, connected toitlby ai jointe,` and the outer ends; of thlbarllworlr inzygroovesf made ltransversely inthe outersidepieceqof@ y the bolt carriage `and zngline with :the Cams f, f. The guides i, r, are attached athena bolt-carriage one directly over the `otheras f shown in Fig. 2, and thelbars J,J`, are; con,` t i nected to the guidesneartheir outer ends.` `l On the framing` A,landmjustyinzfront of the saw C, an upright `K,I'isplaced.; "This75 upright is attached toahorizontal platej,
which is fitted in aproper guide lc, secured f to a traverse bar l* ofthe framing. @The upright K, has two horizontal armsi Z`,j`Z, attached to it and these arms form;` the lbear-3l 80" fl ings for a rotary planerL, whichis formed` of knives m, attachedtolthe oppositejsidesw of a polygonal head n. To the ilowerpartw of the head a pulley o, is y attached, and to t the lower endoftheu rightjK, "a oord ori aid cordlor chain chain p, is secured. l t passing over a pulley oIguideIg, and having a weight r, attached toyitslower end," l said weight havinglaftendency to lieepthe` "l lower bearing in Contact with the outersides` l of the guides I, I." i
The bolt-carriage E,is operated byQarack 3f and pinion as usualin order` tofeedthe bolt 1 `3 to the saw, and by means of an ordinary` clutch arrangement the' pinionis disengaged 95 f from its shaft M, inorder that theboltl.
carriage may be readily` `gigglged back ur `'Illi'et` t saw C, planer L,.and shaft `Myrnay befro-Iy1 tated` in any proper way.I
The operation is as U follows Theboltlf shown in red is securedbetweenwtheljaws d, d, of the head block F,4 and *as thelbolt y carriage E, moves in the direction indicated Y by the arrow Fig. 3, `a shinglelissawedfrom the bolt. When the `carria e E,\reaches"the `11l05` termination of its;` forwar movement and, the shingle sawed from the` bolt, `Ithewcare v rage is gagged back andthe `head `biockifty I moved `forward at one end inorder that the` bolt may be presented obliquelytothe sawgllOV The head block F has itsz ends `moved alter! nately owing to the position 0f `the1tapptsw c on the shaft G, and the latter is rotated a certain distanceV just previous to the ter:- mination of each gigging back motion in consequence of the lever H, striking a pin ax on the framing and thereby actuating the pawl h. By this arrangement the shingles will be cut with their butts alternately from either side of the bolt. The above operation is substantially the same as that of many shingle machines in which circular saws are used. Y
Each time the shaft G, is turned by the pawl L, the guides I, I, are actuated one by a cam f, and the other by the pressure of the lower arm Z, of the upright K, against it. The guides I, I, guide alternatelyY the planer L, for they are alternately acted upon by the cams f, to assume a parallel position, with the face of the bolt so that the planer L, will be made, as the carriageV E, and bolt are moved forward toward the saw, to rotate in a plane parallel gles from the bolt, for they are in present use and are not of my invention but,
I do claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
The employment or use, in connection f with the shingle-sawing machine described,
of the guidesI, I, attached to the bolt-carriage E, and actuated alternately to perform their proper function to the planer L,
the whole being arranged substantially as l and for the purpose set forth. p
J. E. STURDY.
