An object of the present invention is to provide a padlock wherein the locking member is substantially inaccessible when the lock is in use and wherein the entire locking mechanism is well shielded and virtually tamper-proof.
Another object of my invention is to provide a padlock with the desirable characteristics referred to which is of relatively simple and inexpensive construction.
The above and further objects of this invention will become apparent from the followin description of certain embodiments thereof, refer ence being bad to the accompanying drawing in which: i y

Referring first to Figs. 1 through 3, there is shown a padlock comprising a housing III which consists of a front wall H, top wall l2, bottom wall I3 and side walls I4, IS. The housing I 0 may have solid walls on five sides, as shown, but may also be laterally recessed to receive spring clips or the like to hold it in place.
Integral with the housing and bisecting its interior, thereby forming an upper and a lower chamber, is a stationary center plate l6 having apertures I I through which pass vertical rods or pins I8; these rods join together an upper and a lower movable plate I9, 20, respectively, positioned above and below the center plate I6. Coil springs 2|, interposed between the plates l6 and I9, tend to raise the assembly l8, l9 and 20 from the operative or closed position shown in Figs. 2 and 3 to the inoperative or open position shown in Fig. 1. This action is assisted by a curved blade solaims. (01. -32
spring 22, positioned between the bottom wall (3 and the lower plate 20, which tends to assume the shape illustrated in Fig. 5.
The positioning of the assembly l8, l9 and 20 is controlled with the aid of a key 23 inserted into the lock cylinder 24 to the rotatable barrel of which, not shown, there is secured by screws 25 a tongue 26 rigid with a cylindrical cam member 21. Rotation of the key 23 to close the lock will swing the tongue 26 from its inoperative position, shown in Fig. 1, into its operative position.-
visible in dotted lines in Fig. 2, cam member 21 thereby depressing the plate 20 against the action of springs 21 and 22.
Hingedly secured to the upper plate 19, in the embodiment of Figs. 1-3, is a locking member 28 which may have the form of a fiat plate and which, when the lock is closed, is prevented from swinging outwardly and upwardly by an upstanding edge portion 29 extendingfrom the rear end of bottom wall l3. Fig. 3 illustrates how the padlock may be used to secure two latch members 30, 3| together, the locking member 28 engaginga loop or eye 32 extending from latch member 30 through a slot 33 provided in latch member 3|.
The locking member may also be given a shape difierent from that shown in Figs. 1 and 2, e. g. the horseshoe shape of member 28a as shown in Fig. 4, for the purpose of co-operating "with latch members of difierent construction, as will be readily apparent from the foregoing.
In the embodiment of Figs. 5 and 6 the hinged locking member 28 or 280. has been replaced by a depending apron 28b rigid with the upper plate [9. The member 28b as well as the co-operating edge portion 29b may be provided with one or more registering recesses 128b, 129b, respectively, adapted to close about headed bolts 32b extending from a latch member (not shown). Operation of the padlock shown in Figs. 5 and 6 is otherwise identical with that of the padlock previously described.
Fig. 7 shows how a locking member 280, rigid with plate H! as in the preceding case and cooperating with an edge portion 290, may be provided with one or more tongues I280 adapted to enter apertures I33c in a bolt 33c which passes through apertures in members 300 and Me. Head 233a of bolt 330 may be solid or may be traversed by a bore 333a adapted to receive a chain or the like, not shown. The open position or the locking member 280 is indicated in dotdash lines.
Figs. 8 and 9 show the central plate l8 provided with a vertical appendage 34 having vertical cutouts 35 of different sizes, each cutout receiving an operating element 36 swingably mounted in the vertical plate 34 by means of a rod 31 common to all of these elements. The elements 36 have upper portions of difierent length, each provided with a hook-shaped extremity I36, and lower portions of equal length extending. toward the plate 20. The hooked ends, I36 are all engageableby the suitably shaped key 23, shown in dot-dash lines in Fig. 8, turn.- ing of the key to open the lock causing the elements 36 to assume an inclined or horizontal. position as indicated in dot-dash lines in Fig. 9, thereby enabling the springs 2| and- 22 toraise the plate 20. It will be understood that only simultaneous engagement of all the elements 36 by the proper key will permit the plate 20 to rise, this enabling the padlock to be opened.
While certain embodiments of the invention have been. particularly described and illustrated, it is to be understood that the invention is: capable of numerous modifications and adaptations without exceeding the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is: 1. A padlock comprising a housing having an open. side, a rim partially obstructing said open side, a plate fixedly secured to said housing and transversely bisecting it, a. pair of interconnected:
movable members supported on. opposite sides of said plate, link rods slidably passing through said plate and serving. to interconnect and support said pair of movable members, spring means engaging at least one of said members in a manner tending to displace the members in one direction, operating means arranged to engage one of said members for displacing it in a direction opposite tov the. one in which it is tended to be displaced by said spring means, and a locking member secured to one of said movable members.
2-; A padlockaccordingto claim 1 wherein said locking member is hinged to one of said movable members.
3. A padlock according to claim 2 wherein said rim is arranged to prevent outward movement of said hinged locking member upon displacement of said movable members.
4. A padlock according to claim 1 wherein said spring means is positioned intermediate said plate member and one of said movable members.
5. A padlock according to claim 1 wherein said spring meansis positioned intermediate said housing and one of said movable members.
6. A padlock according to claim 1 wherein said locking member is rigid with said movable memher and. is. provided with at least one cutout, said rim being provided with at least one cooperating cutout' registering with the first-mentionedcutout, the two cutouts being adapted to retain a latch element between them upon displacement of said movable member by said operating means.
'7. A padlock according to claim 1 wherein said housing is provided with an interior plate having a plurality of cutouts and a plurality of spacing elements each swingably disposed in a respective one of said cutouts, each of said spacing elements having an extremity in contact with said movable member and another extremityengageable by a key, said spacing elements intheir totality constituting said operating means.
8. The combination, with a padlock according toclaim: I, of a latch element having at least one aperture, said locking member being provided' with an outwardly projecting extension adapted to enter said aperture upon displacement of said movable member by said operating means.
