Application October 14, 1949., 'Serial No. '121,375
1 Claim.
This invention relates to improvements in butchers gambrels, and more particularly to a butchers gambrel for safely and securely supporting thereon a number of animal carcasses of different weights, even though the gambrel be in an unbalanced or tilted position.
A further object of this invention is to provide a butchers gambrel of the character described above which is simple in structure and easy to use.
Other objects of this invention will become apparent upon consulting the drawings in conjunction with the accompanying specification.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is an end elevational view showing the butchers gambrel of the present invention dependingly supported from an overhead support;
Figure 2 is an elevational view taken on the line 2-2 of Figure l;
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken along the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Referring now more specifically to the drawings, wherein like reference numerals have been used throughout the several views to designate like parts, there is shown the butchers gambrel of the present invention, generally indicated by the numeral I0. The gambrel Il) includes a hanger bar I which is pivotally suspended intermediate its ends I2, I3 from a support I6 by means of a xed pulley I4. The upper edge of the hanger bar I| declines downwardly toward the ends I2, I3 from a point substantially midway between the ends I2, |3 thereof, the declining edges being designated by the reference numerals 33, 34. The xed pulley I4 is rotatably supported in a pulley frame I'|. A movable pulley I5 is supported from the xed pulley I4 by means of a pulley cord 20 which is xedly secured to the frame of the pulley I4 and looped over the movable pulley I5. The movable pulley I5 is rotatably supported in a pulley frame 2IA. The fixed pulley I4 is dependingly supported from the support I 6 by means of a hook I9 which is carried by the pulley frame I1, the hook I3 being received within an eye I8 xedly secured to the support I6 by means of bolts, as indicated at 22A. Dependingly supported from the pulley frame 2| is a hook 23, the hook 23 being received within an aperture 24 provided substantially midway between the ends I2, I3 of the hanger bar II. Accordingly, by exerting force on the pulley cord 23, movable pulley I5 may be raised or lowered with respect to the support I6, to thereby vertically position 2 the hanger bar I| of the butchers gambrel I0 oi the present invention.
Extending transversely of the hanger bar and opening through the sides of the bar adjacent the end I2 thereof is a rst pair of slots 2|, 22. The slots 2| and 22 are arranged inwardly from the end I2 and are spaced from each other along the bar II. Each of the slots 2|, 22 is provided with a narrow opening 23 1ocated intermediate the ends of the slot and extending crosswise of the bar through the top of the bar and opening into the top of the slot, for insertion in and withdrawal from the slots of gai hooks 2l. A second similar pair of slots 24, 25 is provided adjacent to the end I3 of the bar As shown in Figure 2, the bottoms of the slots 2|, 22 and 24, 25 are parallel to the declining upper edges 33, 34, respectively, of the bar I I, so that when the bar I I is in a level horizontal position, the bottoms of the pairs of slots decline in opposite longitudinally outward directions.
As is clearly shown in Figure 2, a gai hook 21 is supportably engaged within the slot 2| and the gaf hook 28 is supportably engaged within the slot 25. The gaff hooks 2T, 28 each support an animal carcass 29, 30, respectively, said carcasses being shown in dotted lines. The gaff hooks 21 and 28 include rectangular eyes 3|, 32, respectively whose upper cross bars 35 are insertable through the narrow openings 23, 26 of the desired ones of the slots 2|, 22 or 24, 25. As clearly shown in Figure 1, the gaff hook 21 is slidably supported in the slot 2| and the gaff hook 28 is slidably supported in the slot 25. Accordingly, the gal hooks 21, 28 will slide to the ends of the slots 2|, 25, toward which the bar II is tilted by dilierences in weight of carcasses 29, 30 supported on the hooks 21 and 28. This slidable arrangement of the gaff hooks 21, 28 within the slots 2 I, 25 allows the butcher to hang carcasses of different weights on the gaff hooks without danger of the gaff hooks falling out of their slots when the hanger arm II is tilted due to an unbalanced condition thereof.
Although one embodiment of the invention has been described, numerous modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the following claim.
What I claim is:
In a butchers gambrel, a normally horizontal hanger bar adapted to be pivotally suspended at a point intermediate the ends thereof, said bar having an upper edgeformedv with oppositely declining edge portions extending between said intermediate point and the ends of the bar, said bar being formed with slots adjacent the ends thereof extending transversely across the bar and opening through the opposite sides 0f the bar, said slots extending lengthwise of the bar and parallel to the declining upper edge portions of the bar, and gai hooks having cross bars positioned in the slots and slidably resting in the slotssaid cross bars being narrower than the lengths of the slots whereby the gaff hooks are free to slide gravitationally toward either end of the slots when the hanger bar is in a tilted position, said slots being spaced from the upper and lower edges of the bar, the bar being formed with transversely elongated relatively narrow openings positioned intermediate the ends of and opening downwardly into the slots through which 4 the cross bars of the gait hooks can be inserted and removed.
