10 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD R. EDWARDS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book Binding, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improved method of sewing books; and it consists in securing together the folded sheets or signatures composing a book by the ordinary binding twine or cord arranged in notches out in the back of the signatures, and the longitudinal thread passing within the fold of each signature and up through the same, the binding-cords and longitudinal thread being united together by means of a loop-thread passing alternately over the binding-cords from side to side, and looping with the longitudinal parallel thread within the signatures, so that with each alternate pass of the lock-thread over the cord it loops with thelongitudinal orsignature thread, thereby firmly uniting the three threads and forming a superior method of sewing books, especially adapted to being performed by a machine employing straight needles for making the loop-stitch.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing several signatures of a book attached together by my improved method of sewing. Fig. 2 is a skeleton plan view, showing the arrangement and combination of the twine and threads comprising my invention.

and combining its parallel series with bindingcords B. The longitudinal thread D passes within the fold of each signature and in parallel array from signature to signature through the slits b b.

In the operation of my method of sewing books the signatures are all properly sawed to receive the binding-cords B and slitted in the ends. Then they are taken, one at a time, and spread partly open on a suitable ope-ratingtable, the needles, with loop-threads G, are then passed into the fold of the signature on one side of the cord B and form loops 0 within said fold, through which passes the longitudinal thread I). The thread D then passes through the slit 1) in one end of the signature and into a similar slitin the succeeding signature in position for its passage through loops formed in a like manner to those above described, except that in making the loop-stitches in the second signature the cords B are shifted a trifle to one side of the path of the needle containing the loopthreads 0, so as to pass the threads 0 over them and make theloops con the opposite sides thereof to those of the first signature, and so on from signature to signature until the book is completed.

Instead ofthe binding-cords B, strips ofparchment attached in the usual manner may be used, and the book sewed as herein described.

I claim- The method of sewing books, consisting in placing the transverse binding-cords in notches on the folded side of the signature, running a thread longitudinally in the fold of one signature, and then passing said thread up through the signature and carrying it over to and into the fold of the next signature, and looping a thread around the said transverse cord and longitudinal thread, as set forth.
