1 Claim. 1
My invention relates to cartons for use in shipping or storing bottles, jars or other articles. The carton is made of corrugated paperboard or the like and is provided with partition strips forming individual cells or compartments for the articles placed within the carton. The invention provides an improved form of partition strips including a strip or strips extending the full length of the carton, combined with and in interlocking relation to a strip which is bent back and forth or in a zigzag form to provide transverse cell walls, the strips being fitted within the carton in a manner to rigidly hold the strips in position.
Referring to the accompanying drawings which illustrate a preferred form of the invention:
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of a carton with the lid in open position and the partition strips in position therein.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the assembled partition strips.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary elevational view of the longitudinal partition strip.
The carton is of rectangular construction and comprises vertical side walls 5 and 6, end walls 7, and a hinged top or cover 8. The interior of the carton is divided into individual cells or compartments by partition strips including a longitudinal strip and a cooperating strip II. These strips are made of corrugated paperboard, cardboard, or the like. The strip H! as shown, extends the full length of the carton, its ends abutting against the end wall I of the carton. The strip II is folded or bent at parallel fold lines l2, to form rectangular sections or panels I3 which are parallel with and bear against the vertical side walls 5 and 6 of the carton. The sections l3 alternate with transverse sections l4 perpendicular thereto and extending the full width of the carton.
To strips I 3 and M are proportioned to provide cells or compartments l5 which may be square in cross section to receive circular bottles It or other articles. The longitudinal partition strip I0 is provided with a series of vertical slots ll through which the transverse strips l4 extend and in which they have a close lit. The length of the slots I! may be equal to the width ofthe strip ll so that the bottom edges of .both strips rest on the floor of the carton. The upper edge of the strip 10 may be in the same plane as the upper edges of the sides and ends of the carton.
The two partition strips serve in cooperation with the carton walls to provide a multiplicity 01 cells 15. The zigzag or snake strip l l is 2 rigidly held in position as the sections 13 thereof lie flat against the side walls of the carton while the intermittent transverse sections [A are held against movement by means of their interlocking engagement with the strip I0.
Modifications may be resorted to Within the spirit and scope of my invention.
I claim:
A carton comprising vertical parallel side walls, end walls perpendicular thereto and a cover hinged along the top edge of a side wall and of a length and width substantially equal to the length and width of the carton, and partition strips separate from the carton and its cover; said strips including a longitudinal strip extending the full length of the interior of the cartonand a second strip having a width less than that of the first strip and bent to provide a plurality of transverse sections united by integral sections lying against the inner surfaces of the side walls of the carton, the said strips together forming four sided cells, the cells on one side F of the longitudinal strip alternating with those on the other side of the strip, the said transverse sections being united by inte gral sections lying against the inner surfaces of the side walls of the carton, the said transverse sections which form the end portions of said second strip being spaced apart from the end walls of the carton a distance substantially equal to the width of the said cells, the ends of the second strip abutting against the side walls, the longitudinal strip being formed with vertical slots extending upward from the bottom edge of the strip and through which the said transverse sections extend, the latter hav ing a close fit within said slots throughout the length of the slots, the length of the slots being at least equal to the width of the second strip, the upper edges of said cells being spaced below the upper edges of the said walls of the carton, the assembled strips being bodily removable as a unit from the carton.
