My invention relates to a container and relates particularly to a container for garbage or trash constructed in such a manner that the cover cannot be lost, stolen, or inadvertently removed by animals or children, nor can it be misplaced by accident or carelessness.

Containers for garbage and trash have been made and used but these containers were provided with a cover which was easily lost and misplaced, or which could be removed easily by mischievous children and used as an article of play. Animals could also remove the cover to gain egress to the contents within the container permitting the offensive odor of the garbage or trash to pollute the air. The animals as well generally scattered the contents about causing unsanitary conditions. In addition, the prior art containers had the disadvantage of being useless when the cover had been accidentally lost, misplaced, or stolen, necessitating the purchase of a new container, or if used permitting access to the contents of the container to insects and rodents and resulting in unsanitary conditions and offensive odor in the vicinity of the container.

It, therefore, is an object of my invention to provide a garbage or trash container having a cover slideably and permanently attached to the container carrying bail, thereby preventing the loss, stealing, or inadvertent misplacing of the cover.

Another object of my invention is to provide a garbage or trash container, wherein the cover cannot-be separated from the container by mischievous children wishing to utilize it as a toy.

Another object of my invention is to provide a garbage or trash container wherein the cover cannot be removed by a stray animal such as a dog or cat and lost as well as preventing the egress of stray animals to the contents of said container.

Other objects of my invention are to provide a garbage or trash container which is easily and economically produced, which is sturdy in construction, and which is highly effective in use.

With the above and related objects in view my invention consists in the details of construction and combination of parts as will be more fully understood from the following description when read in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, in which:

Referring now in greater detail to the drawing wherein similar reference characters refer to similar parts,-I show a garbage or trash container, generally designated as A, having a cover,` Vgenerally designated as B, to seal the container- A against animals and to prevent thevoffen'sive'odor of any garbage or trash deposited therein from polluting the air. The cover B is slideably and permanently fastened to the container carrying bail, generally designated as C, by means off the cover guide and holder, generally designated as D. A cover lock, generally designated as E, is provided to lock the cover B to the top of the carrying bail C when placing garbage or trash into, or when emptying the container A.

The container A is made of a suitable metal such as a heavy gauge galvanized steel or iron, and it may be corrugated for added strength. The container may be of any size or configuration but the container illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 has a circular bottom I0 to which is attached a substantially perpendicular, continuous wall I2 to confine any garbage or trash which may be deposited on the bottom IB. The continuous wall I 2 is attached to the outermost circumference of the bottom IIJ in any suitable manner.

The cover B may be made of any suitable material, but I prefer that it be made of the same material as the container A. The cover B consists of a circular top I4 which is slightly larger in size than the bottom I9 of the container A. A short continuous wall I6 is attached to the top I4, or may be made integral with, the cover B to closely embrace the wall I2 of the container A when the top I4 is in contact with the upper portion of the wall I2 of the container A. A handle I5 for lifting the cover B from the container A is provided. The handle I5 is fastened to the cover in any suitable manner but in line with the top of the container carrying bail C so that the cover lock E, which will be hereinafter described, will engage the top of the bail C.

The bail C is substantially U-shaped and is provided with an eye I8 at the end of each leg of the U-shaped bail C. Each eye I8 is made partly open so it can be passed through a bore 20 in the leg 22 of a substantially T-shaped bracket 24. A bracket 24 being attached to each side of the container A in any suitable manner. However the brackets 24 must lie in the same plane and on a common diameter through a cross-section of the container. The eyes I8 are closed over the legs 22 after the eyes are passed through the legs 22, thus securing the bail C to the container in a pivotal manner. The bail C may be of heavy galvanized wire or formed of a suitable rod of metal which will not rust or corrode.

The cover guides vand holdersD are made of a suitable heavy piece of steel or other metal. The cover guides D are provided with a generally U-shaped portion 26 to pass over .the sides of the bail C and with bent overportions 28A and 28B integrally formed with the legs of -the U-shaped portion 26. The guides D-arefastened securely to the cover B in any suitable manner in line with the handle l attached to the top I4 of the cover B, thereby retaining the cover `B z in i slideable, yet permanent engagement -With ithefcontainer carrying bail C.
