UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARTIN LANDENBERGER, JR., OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
HOSIERY AND METHOD OF CUTTING THE SAME.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 262,792, dated August 15, 1882,
Application filed March 20, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARTlN LANDENBER- GER, J r., a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Hosiery and in Cutting the Same, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain improvements in that class of socks and stockings which are cut from webs or tubes of knitted fabric, the object of my invention being to reduce the number of seams heretofore required in making the foot, ankle, and heel on a sock or stocking of this class.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view of a tubular piece of knitted fabric, showing my improved plan of cutting a stocking-blank therefrom; Fig. 2, a side view of part of the stocking made from said blank;. Figs. 3 and 4, views showing another method of carrying out my invention; Fig. 5, a view showing still another plan, and Fig. 6 a view illustrating the application of .my invention to the cutting of stocking-blanks from flat webs of fabric instead of tubes.
In Figs. 1 to 4, A is a tube of fabric of a diameter large enough for the heel, calf, and upper portion of the leg of the stocking.
In carrying out my invention I cut away a portion of this tube, as shown by the dotted line as in Fig. 1, so as to impart to the cut portion of the tube the proper shape for the ankle, heel, and foot of the stocking, the cut edges being then sewed together, as shown in Fig. 2, to complete the stocking, which has but a single seam, 3 extending from the point of dotted lines in Fig. 3, the continuity of the scam in this case beinginterrupted at w by an uncut portion of the tube; or the tube may be of sufficient width only for the ankle portion of the stocking, and the shape of the calf and heel may be imparted in the usual manner by stretching the stocking on a press-board, the foot only being shaped by cutting. (See Fig. 5.}
In applying my invention to the cutting of blanks from flat webs of fabric the plan shown in Fig. 6 may be adopted, the blanks being arranged in reverse order so as to lessen waste in cutting.
I claim as my invention- 1. A sock or stocking having the foot shaped by cutting, and in having in the foot one seam extending along the sole from the heel to the point of the toe, as set forth.
2. A stocking having the foot, heel, and ankle shaped by cutting, and having a singe seam extending from the point of the toe along the sole, around the heel, and up the ankle, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
MARTIN LANDENBERGER, .Ilt.
