DISPLAY TRAY Eugen F. Prcstinari, Short Hills, N. J., assgnor to Gemex Company, Union, N. J., a corporation of New Jersey Application December 21, 1950, Serial No. 202,027
(Cl. 20G-75) Claims.
This invention relates to display trays, and more particularly to display trays for watch bands, bracelets or the like which are sold mounted on rectangular paper cards.
The object of the invention is the provision of a display tray for holding cards on which are mounted watch bands, bracelets or the like in neat array with the tray of lightweight construction so that it may be easily handled.
In general, a display tray of this invention oomprises an open rectangular frame having a width corresponding to the length of the cards which it is to hold. The frame has an integral inwardly directed flange forming a downwardly facing shoulder. At each of two opposite sides of the frame is a series of narrow partitions formed integral with the frame projecting down from the iianges and spaced at intervals slightly greater than the width of the cards, each partition at one side being opposed to a partition. at the other side. A rectangular bottom corresponding in size to the opening in the frame is fitted in the frame abutting the lower edges of the partitions. The bottom is held in place in the frame by retainers formed integral with the frame extending under the margins of the bottom. This arrangement is such thatthe downwardly facing shoulder of the anges, the partitions, and the bottom define two series of opposed pockets at the two opposite sides of the frame adapted to receive the ends of the cards to hold the cards in neat array. Other features will be in part apparent and in part pointed out hereinafter.
The invention accordingly comprises the elements and combinations of elements, features of construction, and arrangements of parts which will be exemplified in the structure hereinafter described and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the following claims.
In the accompanying drawing, in which one of various possible embodiments of the invention is illustrated Fig. 1 is a plan view of a display tray of this invention;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged section on line 2-2 oi Fig. 1, with parts broken away;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged section on line 3-3 of Fig. 1, with parts broken away; and,
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary bottom plan view of the tray shown in Fig. 1, with a bottom panel and backing strip removed.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several Views of the drawing.
Referring to the drawing, the display tray of this invention is shown to `comprise an open rectangular frame generally designated I having end members 3, and side members 5. The `tray is approximately twice the length of the card-s to be displayed therein, and has a central dividing member l' extending from one side member 5, to the other. Within the frame on opposite sides of the central member l are two lightweight bottom panels 9. In a preferred form, the frame is molded of plastic material, and the bottom panels are sheets of cardboard.
End members 3 and side members i5 are generally of angle shape in oros-s section throughout their lengths, and the central member 'l is generally T-shape'd in cross section throughout its length. The arrangement is such that the end members 3, and side mem-bers 5 have ilange portions Id and II, respectively, directed inwardly in the plane of the frame to form a flange around the inside of the frame. The central member l has oppositely directed ange portions I3 which lie in the plane of and form extensions of the above iiange portions Il! and Il. Extending perpendicularly to the plane of the frame are wall portions it and Vi formed on the yend and side members, respectively, and a stem portion i9 formed on the central T-shaped member 7. In eiect, the frame I consists of two smaller reotangular frames with inwardly directed anges.
The bottom. panels El are of such rectangular outline as to iit within the walls I5, il, i9 and lie marginally beneath the ilanges IG, I i, I3. The margins of the panels abutthe lower edges of a plurality of partitions 2l spaced along the bottom sides of the flanges Il) and flanges I3 at the ends 3 and center 'l of the frame. The partitions 2| are narrow bosses formed integral `with the frame extending `lengthwise. thereof projecting slightly from beneath the end ianges Il) and central flanges I3. They lie in planes generally at right angles to frame members 3 and 'i and to the plane of anges I!! and I3. The partitions on the end members are opposed to the partitions on the central member, and are equidistantly spaced apart to provide pockets -23 of width corresponding to the width of the cards.
The bottom panels 9 also abut against a plurality of bosses 25 on the bottom sides of flanges II at sides 5 of the frame. Bosses 25 extend lengthwise of the frame at the inner edges of the flanges, and serve the dual ,purpose of holding the bottom panels 9 spaced from the side vanges II and preventing the cards from slipping under these side flanges.
A plurality of inwardly projecting lugs 21 and 29 at the back of the frame abut the rear faces of backing panels 9. Lugs 2l are formed integral with wall portions I5 at the ends 3'of the frame, and lugs 29 are on the Wall portions. I1 at the rmit removal.
sides of the frame. Thus, the bosses 25 and lugs 29 at'the Sides of the frame, and the partitions 2| and lugs 21 at the ends of the frame define channels along three sides of each half of the frame for receiving a bottom panel 9. Thepanels are inserted endwise from the center of theframe, and are secured in place by a removable backing member 3l which is fastened by screws 32 to the stem portion I9 of the T-shaped central member 1.
The bands or bracelets B or the like to be displayed in the tray are i-lxed on'the cards 33, which are of long narrow rectangular form and made of cardboard or the like. rlhe cards are adapted to be inserted at their ends 35 into the pockets 23 formed at the center and ends of the tray by partitions 2l in conjunction with flanges l) and i3 and bottom panels 9. For example, a band B is tiedon'a card 33 Aasshown indotted lines in Fig. l, andthe `ends '35 of the card are caught beneath 'the'end and center flanges ld and i3, respectively.
At Vthe 'ends of the frame under the ilanges are stops -39 adapted to Ycooperate with the ends 35 'of Vcards 33. The cards 3S are of a width correthe end and center flanges l@ and i3, respectively.
Sidewise movement of the display 'cards isprevented by the vpartitions 2l 'and bosses 25.
example, Ythe tray illustrated carries ten such items. When an item Bis sold,'it is removed together with the display card to which it is attached. The flexibility ofthe display cards per- As various items are sold, new display cards may be placed'in the tray. Also, the backing panels `9 may be readilyreplaced if they vshould become 'damaged It will'be notedthat certain of the rear lugs 2l' and 29 have 'feet`4l formed inwardly and projecting rearwardly from the tray. These feet are adapted to cooperate with the top of another frame so that several trays may be readily stacked. A top molding is provided at 3 for cooperation with such feet.
In view of the above, it will be seen that the several objects of Vthe invention are achieved and other advantageous results attained.
As many changes could be made in the above constructions without departing` from the scope of the invention, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing be interpreted as illustrlative and not in a limiting sense.
