F. E. HEINIG. MACHINE FOR PUNGHING AND FORMING METAL TAGS. No. 262,667. Patented Aug. 15, 1882..
trap TABS are FREDERICK E. HEINIG, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY, ASSIGNOR TO DICK &
' OEAVESON, OF SAME PLACE.
MACHINE FOR PUNCHING AND FORMING METALTAGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 262,667, dated August 15, 1882. Application filed August 20, 1881. Renewed June 19, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FREDERICK E. HEINIG, of Louisville, Kentucky, have invented a new and usefulImprovementin Machines for Punching and Forming Metallic Tags for Tobacco, of which the following is a clear, full, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure l is a perspective view of my in vention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. dis a vertical section through a: a: of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a tag formed. Fig.5 shows the lower face of the plunger with its recesses.
The object of myinvention is to cut and provide the fastener bent down ready for use at one and the same operation, cutting the spur from the body of the tag itself; and it consists in the combination of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the exact manner in which I have carried it out.
In the drawings, A represents the bed-plate of my machine, and B B the guides, between which the metal strips for forming the tags are passed to the die 0, formed in the end of the 0 plate A. The die (J is the exact form intended for the tag, and as the punch descends it passes into the die 0, carrying with it a portion of the metal strip of the form of the die. In the bottom of the die 0 are two triangular-shaped 5 punches, b l), with two edges sharpened and with the third edge dull. In the bottom of main punch are two recesses corresponding in shape to the small triangular punches secured to the bottom of the die 0, so that When the main punch descends into the die, carrying with it the piece cut from the metal strip, the triangular punches react on the main punch and force up the fasteners d 61 into the recesses of the main punch, and thus complete the tag at asingle operation. In the bottom of the 5 die 0' is also placed a spring, a, which yields to the main punch as the same descends, but rebounds when thepunch is raised, and throws the tag from the lower punches, b b, and allows it to pass from the die on an incline to a proper receptacle.
It is evident that any form of tag can be cut by my machine by having a suitablyformed die and punch, and in all cases the fastening spur is cut from the body of the tag and not outside of it, as is now generally the case with tag-cutting machines in use.
Having thus explained my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Ina machine for punching and forming metal tags for tobacco, the plate A, provided with the guides B B and die 0, in combination with a main punch provided with recesses in its face, and the triangular punches b b, all constructed to operate substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
