The present invention relates to a sleeve construction and it particularly relates to an adjustable sleeve construction.

It isamong the objects of the. present invention to provide a simple, readily manufactured and readily adjusted sleeve which may be readily varied from. a loose. bell to a shoulder drape.

Still further objects and advantages will appear in the more detailed description set forth below, it being understood, however, that this more detailed description is given by way of illustration and explanation only and not by way of limitation, since various changes therein may be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the scope and spirit of the present invention.

It has been found most satisfactory according to one embodiment of the present invention to provide a draped sleeve construction which may be readily reversed in part or whole and by suitable eyelets or fasteners attached to the shoulder and to the sleeve to give a novel draped effect.

The invention also consists in certain new and original features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter set forth and claimed and as to its other objects, features and advantages, the mode of operation and manner of its organization, these, inter alia, may be better understood by referring to the following description considered in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part thereof in which:

Referring to Figs. 1 to 3; the wearer A is shown in a dressin gown B with waist buttons Ill and shoulder buttons H preferably of matching design and with draping bell shaped sleeves C. This invention is particularly applicable to housecoats, housedresses, negligees and robes although preferably applied to wide loose bell or angel sleeves, it may also be applied to narrow sleeves having longitudinal slide fastener openings along the bottom thereof, to permit the lower par-t of sleeve to be reversed and draped up over the upper arm.

The sleeves C may be slit with or without slide fasteners on the edges of the slit part. way up the forearm or up to or beyond the elbow as indicated at l2 and opposite the slit they are provided with loops [3.

As best shown in Figs. 9 and 10, the sleeve is joined by the stitching I4 and is turned over. The edge portions l5 are provided with a decorative edging tape [6 which may be stitched in position as indicated at H. The loop I3 is held down at its ends M3 by means of the edge tape E9. The loop I3 is. normally sewn into the sleeve so that it will be concealed or lie against the interior face of the sleeve.

To adjust the sleeves from the bell drape position of Fig. l to the lifted drape position or shortened drape position of Fig. 3, the loop I3 is turned upwardly and outwardly as indicated in Fig. 2 and then is lifted and engaged with the shoulder button I l as indicated in Fig. 3. When this is done on both sides as indicated in Fig. 3 the sleeve C has assumed a new artistic draped position with the edging [6 giving a decorative appearance to the upper inverted sleeve portion20.

In the construction of Figs. 2 and 3, the slit It should be deep enough to permit the ends 21 of sleeve C respectively carrying a button 22 and button hole. 23 to be fastened together over the top of the band It. This is shown at the left of Fig. 3. This will cause concealment of the wrong side 24 of material where no decorative lining is employed or where the print is only on one side. If desired completely to conceal and cover the reverse face 24 a slide fastener may be applied to the edges 25 which can be separable and initiated at the bottom of separated edges or permanent and initiated at the top of the separated edges.

In Fig. 4, the slide fastener 34 may be closed with the sleeve in down or elongated position, by moving the forearm down to contact the edging 40 as at M, followed by engagement of the

ends

42 and 43 of the slide fastener 34 and operation of the slider '35 to leave the edging 40 encircling the forearm.

With narrow sleeves in womens garments and in mens garments, the slit [2 may be extended to above the elbow and opened to permit elevation and shortening of the sleeve and when the sleeve is again elongated the slide fastener may be closed to give a long narrow sleeve. This will permit application of the invention to narrow sleeve constructions.

In the embodiment of Figs. 4, 5 and 6, the shoulder 30 is provided with a draping bell shaped sleeve 3| having an eyelet 32. The edge 33 of the sleeve is provided with a slide fastener 34 having a slider member 35.

The slide fastener element 34 is desirably made of a plastic of a contrasting or con-forming color to the color of the gown 36.

In changing the drape of the sleeve the eyelet 32 is placed over the shoulder button 3'1 as indicat-ed in Fig. 5 and then the slider 35 is moved to top position in Fig. 6 closing the slide fastener as indicated at 34 giving an unusual drape to the sleeve as indicated at 39 in Fig. 6. In this position the V-shaped edge 43 will encircle the arm.,

In the embodiment of Figs. 4 to 6, the sleeve need not be flared or full and relatively narrow cut sleeve may be employed. This is not only applicable to ladies garments, but also to professional and industrial clothes such as uniforms, doctors and dentists clothing and so forth.

The edge 40 of the sleeve of Figs. 4 to 6 may be closed around the forearm in Fig. 4 by pulling up the sleeve and closing the slide fastener 3-3, in a similar manner to the closure around the upper arm in Fig. 6.

In Figs. 7 and 8 the sleeve 50 is provided with a lining 5| of contrasting color or design. The sleeve 50 has a slit 52 as well as a button 53 and a loop 54. When the loop 54 is placed over the button 53 the decorative facing 5| will then be apparent and the edging 55 will serve as a stripe along the top of the arm extending to the shoulder.

The variable or adjustable sleeve as shown is particularly adaptable to wide bell shaped or loose sleeves of womens negligees, house coats, dressing gowns, robes, beach coats and in general to lounging or sports wears or even for evening wear when the sleeves are lined with display fabrics.

Although the invention is shown as applied to a kimono cut sleeve where the sleeve and body of the garment are integral, the sleeve may also be of the set-in type.

Instead of button and loop attachments on the shoulder and lower sleeve, other cooperating attachments or engagements may be provided.

It is thus apparent that the present applicant has provided a novel adjustable sleeve construction which enables dressing gowns, night gowns,

or even outdoor garments to be readily changed in design at the will of the wearer by readily simple manipulation in a very short time.

The sleeves may be shortened to either decrease or increase the amount of the arm which is exposed to sunlight, because of varying temperature conditions or to permit of washing operations in and around the household.

As many changes could be made in the above sleeve construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope of the claims, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.

Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of the invention, and in what manner the same is to be performed, what is claimed is:

1. A reversible adjustable downwardly flaring bell-shaped sleeve construction for ladies housecoats, house dresses, negligees, robes and other intimate wear, having a shoulder attachment, which is convertible from a full length sleeve to a half length sleeve by doubling, telescoping and closing the lower portion below the elbow of the wearer when in full sleeve position upwardly around and over the upper portions of the sleeve above the elbow of the wearer and which in full length sleeve position takes the form of a single frustro-conical enclosure, the outer portion of said enclosure being unslit and said enclosure having a longitudinally slit portion along the inner portion thereof and said enclosure when doubled back to half length forming a double enclosure upon the upper arm of the wearer with the lower end of the extended sleeve below the elbow of the wearer being reversed and attached to said shoulder attachment at the top of the shoulder of the garment and fastener means positioned at the lower bottom edge of the sleeve when fully extended in full sleeve length and said fastener means serving to engage the shoulder attachment when converted into half sleeve position and to close together the slit portion of the sleeve.

2. The construction of claim 1, in which the fastener means consists of a loop sewn on the inside of the top lower edge of the sleeve when in full length position.

3. The construction of claim 1, there being also provided a slide fastener arrangement for closing the sleeve.

4. The construction of claim 1, there also being provided a slide fastener arrangement for closing the sleeve, said slide fastener arrangement extending along the bottom edge of the sleeve when in full sleeve position and extending longitudinally of the doubled-up sleeve in half sleeve position.

5. The construction of claim 1, there being also provided a slide fastener arrangement for closing the sleeve, in which the slit portion extends along the sleeve the full length from the arm pit of the wearer to the bottom edge of the sleeve and in Which said slide fastener arrangement extends along the slit portion from the arm pit to the bottom edge of the sleeve.

6. The construction of claim 1, there being also provided a slide fastener arrangement for closing the sleeve, said slide fastener extending around the bottom edge of the sleeve encircling the wrist of the wearer and upon reversal of the sleeve extending along the top edge and being closable together to close the sleeve when in half sleeve position.
