Cooking Range. No. 26.257. v Patented Nov. 29,1859.

UNITE GEORGE COOPER, OF CONCORD, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
COOKING-RANGE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 26,257, dated November 29, 1859.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE COOPER, of Concord, in the county of Herrimac and State of New Hampshire, have invented an Improved Elevated Oven Cooking-Range; and I do hereby declare that the same is fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, of which Figure 1, denotes a front elevation of the said range. Fig. 2, a transverse and central section of it. Fig. 3, a vertical and longitudinal section taken through the boiling chamber, the flues and ovens. Fig. 4, is a horizontal section of the three flued pipe T, leading upward from the boiling chamber.
In the drawings, R, represents the fireplace S, the ash pit, and P, the boiling chamber of the said range they being constructed and arranged together in the ordinary manner.
At some distance above the boiling chamher, two ovens O, O, are arranged as shown in Fig. 3, against whose bottoms outer sides and tops, flues D, E, F, G and H, are carried as shown in said Fig. 3. Furthermore, from the boiling chamber, P, a pipe T, is extended vertically and divided into three separate flues A, B, C, the middle one of which, viz., A, is extended upward between the two ovens and the flues, D, and, G, and is provided, at its top, with one or more passages opening into the flue, F, such passage or passages being furnished with a damper or register valve, a. Furthermore, the two lateral flues, B, and C, leading upward from the boiling chamber, P, and on opposite sides of the flue, A, should be respectively provided with dampers, b, c, and be made to open respectively into the flues, B, and, C, running underneath the ovens, O, 0. Under the said combination and arrangement of flues, the two ovens, O, O, may be placed directly against the central flue, A, or what is better, each oven may be isolated from such flue, A, by means of a flue I, or K, arranged between the central flue and the oven and made to open into the flue which is directly underneath the oven. When such isolating flues I, K, are employed each should communicate with the flue, A, by
one or more openings to which a damper or register (Z, should be applied, such damper and opening or openings being arranged at or near the upper part of the flue A, as shown in the drawings. By the aforesaid collection of flues, connecting passages and dampers arranged relatively to the boiling chamber and the two ovens as described, the smoke and volatile products of combustion from the fire place or boiling chamber thereof can be made to pass between the ovens without going through the flues D, E, G, and H, or instead thereof, such smoke and volatile products may all be caused to pass through the flues D, E, G, and H, and thence over the tops of the ovens and to the escape flue, U, leading to a chimney. By the employment of the isolating flues I, K, the smoke and heated volatile products of combustion may'either be all carried off through the direct flue A, without contact with either the right or left hand oven or both of them, or such smoke and heat may be turned through the openings of the dampers, (Z, (Z, into the said isolating flues and made to descend through the same into the flues D, and, G, in which case, the dampers, I), 0, may be supposed to be closed either in whole or in part.
So by the above described combination and arrangement of flues, connecting passages and dampers, all the heated currents of smoke may be made to circulate in contact with either of the ovens, at pleasure, or may be divided and made to pass around them in such proportion as circumstances may require.
The removal of the entire heated products by the flue, A, when provided with the insulating flues, I, K, affords to the range an important advantage in warm or summer weather, especially when it may be desirable not to heat the ovens.
I do not claim arranging an upright flue between two ovens when it and the flues around the ovens open into a single flue leading upward from the fireplace or the boiling chamber thereof, but
\Vhat I do claim is-- 1. The combination and arrangement of the separate leading flues A, B, C, (each provided With a damper a, b, or 0', arranged the bottom flues, D, and, G, and to communiin it as explained) With flues D, E, F, G, H, cate With the flue, A, by openings provided 4 disposed around the ovens as specified. With dampers all as herein before specified. 7
2. And in combination therewith I claim GEORGE COOPER.
5 the separate insulating fines I, K, arranged Witnesses: V between the ovens and on opposite sides of ISAAC A. HILL, 1 the leading flue, A, and made to open into I WM. E. CHANDLER.
