PATENT FFICE.
ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
BOTTLE-WRAPPING, CARPET-LININGJ &C.
SPECIFICATION-forming part of Letters Application filed June ,To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES H. MGLEAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State ot' Missouri, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Bottle-Trappngs, Carpet-Innings, ttc., of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to punctured materials for bottle-wrappings, carpet-linings, Sto.; and it consists in sheets of paper or other suitable material provided with elongated punctured openings, the edges ot' which are raised above the surface of the fabric, so as to constitute cushions for the prevention of breakage when said material is used for wrapping, and to produce a lining which will retain dust, 86e., when said material is used as a carpet-lining.
In order that my invention may be fully understood, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the accompanying drawings, forming part ot' this specification, in Which- Figure l is a perspective View of a sheet of my improved material. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same.
In the said drawings, A B represent the elongated perforations with which the material is raised in the operation ot' punctury ng. These perforations may be arrangedin any suitable manner; but the arrangement shown in Fig. l is that preferred by me as tending to produce a perfect action of the cushioning-raised edges of the perforations-that is to say, the said perforations are arranged in zigzag lines or oblique series-as shown at A B in Fig. l.
I am aware that paper and vother fabrics for wrappings, Sac., have heretofore been per- Patent No. 262,452, dated August 8, 1882.
22,1882. (No model.)
forated by puncturing. Such punctures have, however, been in the form of round holes.
My invention consists in forming oblong punetured pert'orations in contradistinction to the round holes heretofore employed, and I claim great practical advantage in the oblong shape, as it avoids the collapsing of the raised edges, which is the objectionable feature in round punctures.
I am aware that carpet-linings have been heretofore provided with oblong depressions; but these are not the same thing as my perforations inasmuch as, while the former retain the dust and becoming filled therewith cause it to pass through the carpet when troddcn upon, my perforations, while forming receptacles for the dust, allow it to pass through to the floor. At the same time the raised edges do not collapse when trodden upon, as in round perforations.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A material for bottle-wrappings, carpetlinings, &c., provided with oblong perforations with raised edges, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
2. A material for bottle-wrappings, carpetlinings, Sac., provided with oblong perforations with raised edges, said perforations being arranged in zigzaglines or oblique ranges, as set forth.
