SPlNNlNG-TOP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 262,354, dated August 8, 1882.
Application filed June 3, 1882. (No model.)
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN O. BENEKE, of New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and Improved Spinning-Top, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention consists in a top fitted to receive an explosive cap in such manner that when the top is thrown down for spinning the cap shall explode, as more particularlyhereinafter set forth and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, foriningapart of this specification,in which similar letters of referenceindicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure l is a sectional elevation of my explosive top, and Fig. 2 is a sectional top view of the same.
The top A has a body of wood or other material, as usual, and a metal pin, 1), extending through its center and projecting at thelower end to form the peg. The head 0 is a metal plug, attached preferably by screwing into a recess, and this head is formed with an opening or recess to receive the upper end of the pin 1). NVithin the head 0 and around the pin is a spiral spring, d, which, taking beneath a flange or shoulder on the pin, acts to force the end of the pin against the under side of head 0. The head 0 is slotted at one side, as shown at e, to allow insertion of a paper cap or percussion-disk at the end of the pin 11.
In use the pin 1) is to be drawn down and thecapinserted. The cord is then to be wound as usual, and on throwing the top down for spinning the blow will explode the cap.
The recess in the head 0 may be made square, and the end of pin of corresponding shape to prevent the pin from turning when the cord is wound.
The parts may also be formed to receive a percussion-cap of any form.
Having thus described my invention, Iclaixn as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A spinning-top provided with a sliding pin, and a head recessed to receive a percussion cap or disk at the end of the pin, substantially as shown and described.
2. 1n tops, the combination of the sliding pin 1) and recessed head 0, substantially as shown and described.
JNO. O. BENEKE.
