PAINT BUCKET HOLDER FOR LADDERS Filed April 14, 1949 IN V EN TOR.
ATTORNEY Patented Dec. 23, 1952 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 3 Claims.
This invention relates to an attachment for suspending paint buckets or other containers from ladders.
In the past, devices of this nature have had several disadvantages. The first of these is that in many cases a special container was required to attach to the device. Secondly these devices have usually lacked satisfactory means of firmly supporting the same at different positions on either side of a ladder.
It is an object of this invention to provide a simple, durable attachment of the character described adapted for use with any container having the customary supporting bail.
A further object of the invention is to provide an attachment of the character described which is adapted to be easily and firmly mounted on the outside of either stringer of a ladder.
These and other objects of the invention will be manifest from the following brief description and the accompanying drawings.
Of the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the ladder having on one side thereof a paint bucket attachment embodying the features of the invention, the ladder being shown partly broken away.
Figure 2 is a perspective view similar to Figure l, but illustrating the attachment mounted on the opposite side of the ladder.
Figure 3 is an enlarged side elevation showing the attachment connected to the ladder, as viewed from the left of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary cross-section taken substantially on line 4-4 of Figure 3, and on the same scale.
Figure 5 is a, cross-section taken substantially on the line 5-5 of Figure 3.
Referring to the drawings generally, there is illustrated an attachment l0, embodying the features of the invention, mounted on a ladder I l of known type having laterally spaced stringers l2 and I 3 and vertically spaced rungs I 4.
The attachment Hi includes an elongated channel-shaped metal part Illa, defined by a web portion [5 and spaced side flanges l6 and i1 extending at right angles to the plane of the web, the spacing of said side flanges being proportioned to fit over the upwardly presented edge of one stringer 12 or I3 of the ladder, as shown in Figures 1, 3, 4 and 5. One side flange I1 has an extension l8 therefrom parallel to the plane of the web [5, to be substantially in a plane through or slightly above the outer portions of the rungs I4 in the angular position of the ladder shown in Figure 3.
Pivoted to the outer face of flange extension I8,
centrally of the length thereof, is an elongated shank portion I9 of flat bar metal terminating in a hooked portion 2%] adapted to engage around the upper portion of a selected rung 14 of the ladder. The shank 9 is adapted to extend flatly along approximately half the length of flange extension IS, longitudinally in either direction.
On the other flange l6, centrally thereof, may be pivoted a hook 2 l, of suitable metal stock, upon which a bail 22 of a paint bucket or like container 23 is received to support the bucket in vertically depending position for use, as by a painter on the ladder.
In use of the improved attachment [0, the ohanneL-shaped part Illa is engaged downwardly over the upwardly presented edge of either one of the stringers i2 and I3, as required and as illustrated in Figures 1 and 2. In either instance, however, the channel-shaped part Illa is arranged so that the flange extension I 8 is inwardly of the space between the stringers, the hook 29 being swingable accordingly in reverse directions to be engageable over a run It to prevent the attaohrnent from sliding downwardly along the stringer when a paint bucket 23 or other receptacle is hung by its bail 22 on the hook 2|. In both instances, also, the bucket 23 is suspended at the outer edge of the ladder, where it can be most conveniently reached by a person on the ladder. Moreover, the attachment I!) by frictional engagement of the channel-shaped part Illa with a substantial area of the ladder stringer, provides maximum support for the bucket 23, in addition to engagement of hook 2!] with a rung I l.
Modifications of the invention may be resorted to without departing from the spirit thereof or the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. An attachment for supporting a paint bucket or the like on a ladder having opposite side stringers and spaced rungs therebetween, comprising an elongated member having channelshaped cross-section defined by a web portion and opposed side flanges extending therefrom and adapted to be received over the upwardly presented edge of a side stringer of a ladder with said flanges engaging opposite sides of the stringer, one of said flanges having an elongated outward extension therefrom at an angle to the same, an element provided with a straight elongated shank portion pivoted at one end thereof to said flange extension centrally of the length thereof to extend in either of opposite directions superposed on said outward extension, the other end of said shank being hooked downwardly of the underside of said flange extension to be engageable over a ladder rung, said element thereby being rotatable on its pivot about 180 degrees for downward engagement of said hooked end thereof over a ladder rung when the channel member is selectively applied downwardly over one or other of said opposite ladder stringers, and a hook pivoted to the other said side flange to depend therefrom at the outer side of the selected stringer in all positions of said member and adapted to have a receptacle thereon, said hook thereby being pivotable generally in a plane which is parallel to the plane of said other flange and which is disposed angularly of the plane of rotation of said shank.
2. An attachment for supporting a paint bucket or the like on a ladder having opposite side stringers and spaced rungs therebetween, comprising an elongated member having channel-shaped cross-section defined by a web portionand opposed parallel side flanges extending therefrom and adapted to be received over the upwardly presented edge of a side stringer of aladder with said flanges engaging opposite sides of the stringer, one of said flanges having an. elongated outward extension therefrom at right angles to the same, an element provided witha straight elongatedshank portion pivoted at one end thereof to said flange extension centrally of the length thereof to extendfin, either of, opposite directions superposed on said outward extension, the other end of said shank be: ing hooked downwardly of the underside oi said flange extension to be engageable over a ladder rung, said element thereby being rotatable on its pivot for, downward engagement of said hooked end thereof over a ladder rung whenthe channel member is selectivelyapplied said hook, thereby being 3. An attachment for supporting a paint bucket or the like on a ladder having opposite side stringers and spaced rungs therebetween, comprising an elongated member having channel-shaped cross-section defined by a web portion and opposed parallel side flanges extending therefrom and adapted to be received over the upwardly presented edge of a side stringer of a ladder with said flanges engaging opposite sides of thestringer, one of said flanges having an'elongated outward extension therefrom at right angles to the same, an element provided with a straight elongated shank portion pivoted at one end thereof tosaid flange extension centrally of thelength thereof to extend in either of opposite directions superposed on said outward extension, the other end of said shank being hooked downwardly of the underside of saidflange extension to be engageable over a ladder rung, said element thereby being rotatable on its pivot about degrees for downward engagement 'of said hooked end thereof over a ladder rung when the channel member is selectively applied downwardly over one or other of said opposite ladder stringers, and a hook pivoted to the other said side flange to depend therefrom in all positions of said member and adapted to have a receptacle thereon, said hook thereby being pivotable generally in a plane which is parallel to the plane of said other flange and, therefore, which is at right angles to the plane of rotation of said shank.'
