Application July 17, 1950, Serial No. 174,158
2 Claims.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in hack saw frames and more particularly to a collapsible frame having means by which the saw blade may be easily and quickly attached to the front and rear ends of the frame when the frame is collapsed and wherein the blade is tightly held in the frame when the latter is moved into its working or fully extended position.
An important object of the invention is to provide a hack saw frame composed of front and rear sections pivotally connected to each other at the center of the frame for breaking the frame horizontally at its joint to release the saw blade attached to the front and rear ends of the frame and which tightens the blade in the frame by the movement of the front and rear sections of the frame into a working position and for locking the sections of the frame by movement of the sections thereof past the longitudinal center of the frame.
Another object is to provide a collapsible hack saw frame of simple and practical construction, which is strong and durable, which is locked in its working or fully open position without the aid of fastening means of any character, and which is otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view;
Figure 2 is a top plan view showing the frame locked from collapsing movement;
Figure 3 is a top plan view showing the frame broken to release the blade;
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional View taken on a line 4-4 of Figure 1;
Figure 5 is a similar view showing the frame broken at its joint; and,
Figure 6 is a fragmentary end elevational view showing the blade held on the anchoring pins in a horizontal position.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates the front hack saw frame section and 6 is the rear frame section. The front section includes a front leg I and front longitudinal top bar 8 and rear section 6 includes a rear leg 9 and rear longitudinal top bar It.
The rear end of front top bar 8 is bifurcated,
as shown at H, to receive the front end [2 of rear top bar Ill pivoted to each other for horizontal swinging movement by a vertical pin i3 passing through the adjacent ends of the frame sections.
The lower ends of both the front and rear legs are provided with laterally projecting pins [4, to which the ends of a hack saw blade is may be anchored for cutting by said blade [5 in a plane parallel with that of the frame 5 and is also provided with downwardly extending pins [6 to which the ends of the blade may be anchored for cutting by said blade 15 in a plane transverse to the plane of said frame.
The rear frame section is provided with a handle H.
In the operation of the device, the front and rear sections 5 and 6 swing horizontally on pivot pin [3 to fold or collapse the frame into the position shown in Figure 3, whereby the blade [5 may be placed on either the lateral pins [4 or the downwardly extending pins it. The frame is then straightened to tighten the blade on the pins and by forcing the hinged center of the frame slightly past its longitudinal center in a direction opposite from its collapsing movement, as shown in Figure 2. In this straightened position thereof the sections 5, 6 of the frame are locked against collapsing movement without materially loosening the blade and by the following means.
The inner portion of the slot it formed by the bifurcated end H of front section 5 is transversely straight or flat, as shown at it, while the pivoted end of rear section 6 is also transversely straight, as shown at 20 and is formed with a rounded corner 2| and a substantially square stop corner 22 which functions as a stop engaging the fiat inner portion IQ of said slot It.
The opposing straight portions l9 and 28 are spaced from each other sufficiently to permit locking movement of the front and rear sections past center with the stop corner 22 engaging said portion [9 and rounded corner 2| permits breaking movement of the sections in an opposite direction for collapsing the frame.
In View of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a 3 preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A collapsible hack saw frame comprising a front frame section and a rear frame section each including a downwardly extending leg portion and a longitudinal bar portion, anchoring pins on the lower ends of the leg portions adapted for engaging a saw blade, means pivotally connecting corresponding ends of the bar portions to each other for swinging of said sections laterally of the plane of said frame into past dead center position for holding in said position by tension exerted by said blade against said leg portions, and stop means carried by one of the frame sections engaging the other frame section to establish the past dead center position of said sections.
2. A collapsible hack saw frame comprising a front frame section and a rear frame section each including a downwardly extending leg portion and a longitudinal bar portion, anchoring pins on the lower ends of the leg portions adapted for engaging a saw blade, a vertical pin, pivotally connecting the adjacent ends of the bar portions to each other for horizontal swinging movement, said bar portions having opposing transversely straight portions, one corner of one of said straight portions being rounded to clear the opposing straight portion for collapsing movement of the frame in one direction and a stop formed at an opposite corner of said first named straight portion engaging said opposing straight portion and locking the frame sections from collapsing movement in an opposite direction when said frame sections are moved in said last named direction past the longitudinal center of the frame.
