This invention relates to rolling doors of the type arranged to be wound upon and unwound from a drum at the head of a doorway, and more particularly to an improved operating mechanism for winding and unwinding such doors.
The winding drums of such doors, particularly when the doors are of the heavier type, are operated by a geared electric motor drive controlled from a suitable open and close switch. Limit switch arrangements are provided to open the motor circuit automatically as the door reaches either limit of movement, and automatically operated brake means are associated with the drum to stop the door movement and to retain the door in operated position.
To operate the door in the event of power or motor failure, manual drive means are usually provided. In some cases, the manual drive is entirely independent of the motor drive, resulting in increased weight and cost of the operating parts. When the manual drive means is incorporated into the moto drive means, difficulties are presented in providing for proper independent operation of the two drives.
The present invention is directed to a novel combined motor and manual drive for such doors in which cutting out of the motor drive and release of the brake are easily and simply effected in a novel manner when manual operation is desired. The manual operation is usually applied through an endless chain dependent from the door operating mechanism, and the present invention provides a pendant element adjacent the chain and which is merely pulled to cut out the motor and release the brake for manual operation.
For an understanding of the invention principles, reference is made to the following description of a typical embodiment thereof as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

Referring more particularly to Fig. 2, a rolling door III is secured to a drum II coaxially mounted on a shaft I2, the door, drum, and major portion of shaft I2 being protected by a casing I3. Suitable counter-balancing mechanism (not shown) may be provided for the door. The outer end of shaft I2 has an externally threaded sleeve 2 I5 pinned thereto as at I4 (Fig. 4). Sleeve I5 has longitudinal ribs I6 thereon engaged in keyways II in a drive gear 20, sleeve I5 having a clearance fit through gear 20. Gear is disposed in a gear housing I8.
The outer end of shaft I2 has a head 2I engaging a head 22 on a stud shaft 23 secured by a nut 24 in an arched bracket 26 on housing I8. Spaced from shaft I2, and parallel therewith, is a drive shaft 21 having a grooved driven pulley on its outer end and a pinion 28 rotatable therewith. Pinion 28 meshes with a gear 3I rotatable with a pinion 32 meshing with gear 20, the whole constituting a reduction gearing in housing I8.
Pulley 25 is driven by a V-belt 36 trained over a driving pulley 3|] of a motor 35. The latter is mounted on a bracket 33 adjustable along rod supports 34 for setting the tension on belt 36. A brake drum 3'! is rotatable with pulley and associated with a brake band 38. The latter is normally biased to a drum gripping position by a spring II embracing a tie rod 42, the brake being releasable by a toggle 43 operable by a link 44 connected to a lever 46 pivoted at 41 on the motor housing. The left end of lever 46 is secured to the armature 48 of a solenoid 40 mounted on the motor housing. The right end of the lever carries a hook 5| and a spring 52 connected to a dependent chain 50 for a purpose to be described.
Operation of motor to either open or close the door is initiated by a suitably positioned open and close switch connected, through a,
conduit, to a junction box 53 in turn connected to the motor control 54 through a conduit 56. Whenever motor 35 is energized, solenoid is also energized to move its armature 43 upwardly and swing lever it clockwise. Through link 44 and toggle 43, brake band 38 is held released from brake drum 3! during the period motor 35 is en ergized. When motor 35 is de-energized at either limit of door movement, in a manne to be described, solenoid 40 is simultaneously de-energized, releasing lever 46. The motor 35 is automatically cut out by limit switch means operated by threaded sleeve I5. This sleeve which, through shaft I2 rotates with drum II, is threaded through a plate 51 having a bar 58 extending therefrom. As sleeve I5 rotates in one directionas the door closes, plate 51 is moved outwardly and, as the door reaches the closed position, bar 58 contacts an adjustable stop 6| on a lever 62 secured to a shaft 63 mounted in a bracket 64 on housing I8. As lever 62 and shaft 63 are swung, a second lever 55 on shaft 63 engages a button 66 of a normally closed limit switch included in the close circuit of motor 35. This breaks the motor circuit for closing the door, and the door movement stops.
When the door is moved in the opening direction, rotation of sleeve l5 moves plate 51 inwardly. Bar 58 carries an adjustable stop 61 which, as the door nears the open position, enages the button 68 of a normally closed limit switch in the open circuit of motor 35. Thus, when the door reaches the open position, motor 35 is de-energized and braked to arrest the door movement.
Manual operation is effected by means of a dependent endless chain 60 trained over a sprocket 65. Sprocket 65 is mounted on a stub shaft ll supported in a carrier 12. Thelatter has sleeves l6 slidably mounted on a pair of rods 13 extending from housing I8, and is normally biased outwardly by springs 14 so that a clutch jaw 15 on shaft H is normally disengaged from a clutch jaw 10 on pulley 25.
Rods 13 have fixed thereto bearings 11 carrying a shaft 78. At one end, this shaft has an arm 80 secured to chain 58. Adjacent each rod 13, shaft 18 has aifixed thereto members each comprising a cam arm 8| and a stop 82. Also carried by sleeves I6 is an operating lever 83 arranged to engage the operating button 84 of a main normally closed switch included in the energizing circuits of motor 35.
To manually operate the door, chain 59 (which may be a cable or rod) is pulled downwardly and held down while endless chain 60 is operated. Chain 5!] swings lever 46 clockwise which, through link 44 and toggle 43, releases brake band 38. Also, arm 80 is swung counter-clockwise (Fig. 2) to correspondingly swing shaft 18. Cam arms 8| engage sleeves 16 to move carrier 12 inwardly, compressing springs 74. Jaws l0 and I5 engage, connecting sprocket 85 to pulley and thus to the gearing, for rotating the door operating drum. As carrier .12 isthus moved inwardly, arm 83 depresses button 84 to cut out the motor circuit.
With chain held down, chain is operated to turn sprocket to operate the door. -When the door has been operated to the desired position, chain 56 is released. Springs. move carrier l2 outwardly to disengage the clutch HI-l5. Stop arms 82 prevent bouncing of the disconnect arrangement by engaging carrier 12 as it reaches its outer limiting position. Brake band 38 is closed by springs 4| and tie rod 42, holding the door against movement and ready for motor operation.
While a specific embodiment of the invention has been shown and described in detail to illustrate the application of the invention principles, it will be understood that the invention may be otherwise embodied without departing from such principles.
What is claimed is:
1. In a driving mechanism for rolling doors, a driven shaft; transmission means connecting said driven shaft to a rolling door shaft; a pulley keyed to said driven shaft; an electric motor driving said pulley; normally engaged brake means associated with said motor; first brake release means connected to said brake means and operable concurrently with energization of said motor to release said brake means; second brake release means connected to said brake means and manually operable to release said brake means; a manually operable driving wheel coaxial with said pulley and axially displaceable relative thereto; cooperating clutch elements carried by said pulley and said driving wheel; means normally biasing said driving wheel to a position disengaging said clutch elements; a device associated with said driving wheel and effective, when operated, to move said driving wheel to engage said clutch elements; and a manually operable member connected to said second release means and to said device and operable, when actuated, to simultaneously release said brake means and engag said clutch elements for manual operation of the door.

In a driving mechanism for rolling doors, a driven shaft; transmission means connecting said driven shaft to a rolling door shaft; a pulley keyed to said driven shaft; an electric motor driving said pulley; normally engaged brake means associated with said motor; first brake release means connected to said brake means and operable concurrently with energization of said motor to release said brake means; second brake release means connected to said brake means and manually operable to release said brake means; a manually operable driving wheel coaxial with said pulley and axially displaceable relative thereto; cooperating clutch elements carried by said pulley and said driving wheel; means normally biasing said driving wheel to a position disengaging said clutch elements; a device associated with said driving wheel and effective, when operated, to move said driving wheel to engage said clutch elements; a manually operable member connected to said second release means and to said device and operable, when actuated, to simultaneously release said brake means and engage said clutch elements for manual operation of the door; a normally closed main switch controlling energization of said motor; and a switch operator connected to said device and actuated, when said device is actuated by said member, to open said switch.

In a driving mechanism for rolling doors, a driven shaft; transmission means connecting said driven shaft to a rolling door shaft; a pulley keyed to said driven shaft; an electric motor driving said pulley; normally engaged brake means associated with said motor; first brake release means connected to said brake means and operable concurrently with energization of said motor to release said brake means; second brake release means connected to said brake means and manually operable to release said brake means; a manually operable driving wheel coaxial with said pulley and axially displaceable relative thereto; cooperating clutch elements carried by said pulley and said driving wheel; means normally biasing said driving wheel to a position disengaging said clutch elements; a device associated with said driving wheel and effective, when operated, to move said driving wheel to engage said clutch elements; a manually operable member connected to said second release means and to said device and operable, when actuated, to simultaneously release said brake means and engage said clutch elements for manual operation of the door; a normally closed main switch controlling energization of said motor; a switch operator connected to said device and actuated, when said device is actuated by said member, to open said switch; a pair of limit switches in the motor energization circuit and respectively opening the motor circuit when the door reaches its limit of movement in either direction; and a limit switch operator driven by the rolling door shaft and effective at either limit of door operation, to open the corresponding limit switch.

In a driving mechanism for rolling doors, a driven shaft; transmission means connecting said driven shaft to a rolling door shaft; a pulley keyed to said driven shaft; an electric motor driving said pulley; norm-ally engaged brake means associated with said motor; first brake release means connected to said brake means and operable concurrently with energization of said motor to release said brake means; second brake release means connected to said brake means and manually operable to release said brake means; a manually operable driving Wheel coaxial with said pulley and rotatably mounted in a carrier axially displaceable relative to said driven pulley; cooperating clutch elements carried by said pulley and said driving wheel; means normally biasing said carrier to a position disengaging said clutch elements; a shaft fixed relatively to said driven pulley and adjacent said carrier; cam means on said shaft engageable with said carrier to move the latter axially to engage said clutch elements when said shaft is rocked; a radially extending arm fixed to said shaft; and a manually operable member connected to said second release means and to said shaft arm and operable, when actuated, to simultaneously release said brake means and rock said shaft to move said carrier to engage said clutch elements a for manual operation of the door.

In a driving mechanism for rolling doors, a driven shaft; transmission means connecting said driven shaft to a rolling door shaft; a pulley keyed to said driven shaft; an electric motor driving said pulley; normally engaged brake means associated with said motor; first brake release means connected to said brake means and operable concurrently with. energization of said motor to release said brake means, second brake release means connected to said brake means and manually operable to release said brake means; a manually operable driving wheel coaxial with said pulley and rotatably mounted in a carrier axially displaceable relative to said driven pulley; cooperating clutch elements carried by said pulley and said driving wheel; means normally biasing said carrier to a position disengaging said clutch elements; a shaft fixed relatively to said driven pulley and adjacent said carrier; cam means on said shaft engageable with said carrier to move the latter axially to engage said clutch elements when said shaft is rocked; a radially extending arm fixed to said shaft; a manually operable member connected to said second release means and to said shaft arm and operable, when actuated, to simultaneously release said brake means and rock said shaft to move said carrier to engage said clutch elements for manual operation of the door; a normally closed main switch controlling energization of said motor; and a switch operator connected to said shaft and actuated, when said shaft is rocked by said member, to open said switch.

In a driving mechanism for rolling doors, a driven shaft; transmission means connecting said driven shaft to a rolling door shaft; a pulley keyed to said driven shaft; an electric motor means associated-with said motor; a lever pivoted adjacent said brake means; linkage interconnecting said lever and brake means and operable to release said brake means when said lever is rocked; brake release means connected to said lever and operable concurrently with energization of said motor to rock said lever to release said brake means; a manually operable driving wheel coaxial with said pulley and axially displaceable relative thereto; cooperating clutch elements carried by said pulley and said driving wheel; wheel to a position disengaging said clutch elements; a device associated with said driving wheel and effective, when operated, to move said driving wheel to engage said clutch elements; and a manually operable member connected to said lever to rock the latter and connected to said device and operable, when actuated, to simultaneously release said brake means and. engage said clutch elements for manual operation of the door.

In a driving mechanism for rolling doors, a driven shaft; transmission means connecting said driven shaft to a rolling door shaft; a pulley keyed to said driven shaft; an electric motor driving said pulley; normally engaged brake means associated with said motor; a lever pivoted adjacent said brake means; linkage interconnecting said lever and brake means and operable to release said brake means when said lever is rocked; brake release means connected to said lever and operable concurrently with energization of said motor to rock said lever to release said brakemeans; a manually operable driving wheel coaxial with said pulley and rotatably mounted in a carrier axially displaceable relative to said driven pulley; cooperating clutch elements carried by said pulley and said driving wheel; means normally biasing said carrier to a position disengaging said clutch elements; a shaft fixed relatively to said driven pulley and adjacent said carrier; cam means on said shaft engageable with said carrier to move the latter axially to engage said clutch elements when said shaft is rocked; a radially extending arm fixed to said shaft; and a manually operable member connected to said lever to rock the latter and connected-to said device shaft arm and operable, when actuated, to simultaneously release said brake means and rock said shaft to move said carrier to engage said clutch elements for manual operation of the door.

In a driving mechanism for rolling doors, a driven shaft; transmission means connecting said driven shaft to a rolling door shaft; a pulley keyed to said driven shaft; an electric motor driving said pulley; normally engaged brake means associated with said motor; a lever pivoted adjacent said brake means; linkage interconnecting said lever and brake means and operable to release said brake means when said lever is rocked; brake release means connected to said lever and operable concurrently with energization of said motor to rock said lever to release said brake, means; a manually operable driving wheel'co.
. said clutch elements when said shaft is rocked;
means normally biasing said driving a radially extending arm fixed to. said shaft;za manually operable member connected to said lever to rock the latter and connected to said device shaft arm and operable, when actuated, to simultaneously release said brake means and rock said shaft to move said carrier to engage said'clutch elements for manual operation of the door; a normally closed main switch controlling energization of said motor; and a. switch operator connected to said shaft and actuated, when said shaft is rocked by said member, to open said switch.

In a driving mechanism for rolling doors, adriven shaft; transmission means connecting said driven shaft to a rolling door shaft; a pulley keyed to said driven shaft; an electric motor driving said pulley; normally engaged brake means associated with said motor; a lever pivoted adjacent said brake means; linkage interconnecting said lever and brake means and operable to release said brake means when said lever is rocked; brake release means connected to said lever and operable concurrently with energization of said motor to rock said lever to release said brake means; a manually operable driving wheel coaxial with said pulley and rotatably mounted in a carrier axially displaceable relative to said driven pulley; cooperating clutch elements carried by said pulley and said driving wheel; means normally biasing said carrier to a position disengaging said clutch elements; a shaft fixed relatively to said driven pulley and adjacent said carrier; cam means on said shaft engageable with said carrier to move the latter axially to engage said clutch elements when said shaft is rocked; a radially extending arm fixed to said shaft; a manually operable member connected to said lever to rock the latter and connected to said device shaft arm and operable, when actuated, to simultaneously release said brake means and rock said shaft to move said carrier to engage said clutch elements for manual operation of the door; a normally closed main switch controlling energization of said motor; a switch operator connected to said shaft and actuated, when said shaft is rocked by said member, to open said switch; a pair of limit switches in the motor energization circuit and respectively opening the motor circuit when the door reaches its limit of movement in either direction; and a limit switch operator driven by the rolling door shaft and effective, at either limit of door operation, to open the corresponding limit switch.

In a driving mechanism for rolling doors, a driven shaft; transmission means connecting said driven shaft to a rolling door shaft; a pulley keyed to said driven shaft; an electric motor driving said pulley; normally engaged brake means associated with said motor; first brake release means connected to said brake means and operable concurrently with energization of said motor to release said brake means; second brake release means connected to said brake means and manually operable to release said brake'means; a manually operable driving wheel coaxial with said pulley and axially displaceable relative thereto; cooperating clutch elements carried by said pulley and said driving wheel; means normally biasing said driving wheel to a position disengaging said clutch elements; a device associated with said driving wheel and effective, when operated, to move said driving wheel to engage said clutch elements; a manually operable membercconnected to said second meleasemeans and :to .said device and operable, when actuated, to simultaneously release said brake means and engage said clutch elements for manual operation of the door; a normally closed main switch controlling energization of'said motor; a switch operatorconnected to said device and actuated, when'said device is actuated by said member, to'open said switch; a pair of limit switches in the motor energization circuit and respectively opening the motor circuit when the door reaches its limit of movement in either direction; a threaded sleeve rotatable with the rolling door shaft; a 'nonrotatable element threaded on said sleeve for axial movement therealong when said doorshaft is rotated, and a switch operator fixed to said element and effective, at either limit of door operation, to open the'corresponding limit switch.

In a'driving mechanism for rolling doors. a driven shaft; transmission means connecting said driven shaft to a rolling door shaft; a pulley keyed to said driven shaft; an electric motor driving said pulley; normally engaged brake means associated with said motor; first brake release means connected to said brake means and operable concurrently with energization of said motor to release said brake means; second brake release means connected to said brake means and manually operable to release said brake means; a manually operable driving wheel coaxial with said pulley and axially displaceable relative thereto; cooperating clutch elements carried by said pulley and said driving wheel; means normally biasing said driving wheel to a position disengaging said clutch-elements; 2. device associated with said driving wheel and effective, when operated, to move said driving wheel to engage said clutch elements; a manually operable member connected to said second release means and to said device and operable, when actuated, to simultaneously release said brake means and engage said clutch elements for manual operation of the door; a normally closed main switch controlling energization of said motor; a switch operator connected to said device and actuated, when said device is actuated by said member, to open said switch; a pair of limit switches in the motor energization circuit and respectively opening the motor circuit when the door reaches its limit of movement in either direction; a threaded sleeve rotatable with the'rolling door shaft; a non-rotatable element threaded on said sleeve for axial movement therealong when-said door shaft is rotated; a switch operator fixed to said element; and a pair of adjustable abutments carried by said operator and respectively positioned to engage and operate the corresponding limit switches at either limit of door operation to openthe motor circuit.

In a driving mechanism for rolling doors, a driven shaft; transmission means connecting said driven shaft to a rolling door shaft; a. pulley keyed to said driven shaft; an electric motor driving said pulley; normally engaged brake means associated with said motor; a lever pivoted adjacent said brake means; linkage interconnecting said lever and brake means and operable to release said brake means when said lever is rocked; brake release means connected to said lever and operable concurrently with energization of said motor to rock said lever to release said brake means; a manually operable driving wheel coaxial with said pulley and rotatably mounted in a carrier axially displaceable ,relativeto said driven pulley; .cooperating..clutch elements carried by said pulley and said driving wheel; means normally biasing said carrier to a position disengaging said clutch elements; a shaft fixed relatively to said driven pulley and adjacent said carrier; cam means on said shaft engageable with said carrier to move the latter axially to engage said clutch elements when said shaft is rocked; a radially extending arm fixed to said shaft; a manually operable member connected to said lever to rock the latter and connected to said device shaft arm and operable, when actuated, to simultaneously release said brake means and rock said shaft to move said carrier to engage said clutch elements for manual operation of the door; a normally closed main switch controlling energization of said 10 motor; a switch operator connected to said shaft and actuated, when said shaft is rocked by said member, to open said switch; a pair of limit switches in the motor energization circuit and respectively opening the motor circuit when the door reaches its limit of movement in either direction; a threaded sleeve rotatable with the rolling door shaft; a non-rotatable element threaded on said sleeve for axial movement therealong when said door shaft is rotated; and a switch operator fixed to said element and effective, at either limit of door operation, to open the corresponding limit switch.
