FOIL FEEDING AND EMBOSSING MECHANISM FOR BOTTLE CAPPING AND LIKE MACHINES Filed Feb. 28, 1949 3 Sheets-Sheet 3 FlGJ.
INVENTOR: NELSON V. Bunom.
ATTORNEY Patented Dec. 16, 1952 UNITED STATES TENT OFFICE FOIL FEEDING AND EIHBOSSING MECHA- NISM FOR BOTTLE CAPPING AND LIKE MACHINES 'Nelson'vincent Burdin, Coventry, England, assignor to 'Scotts Engineering (Newport) Limited, Newport, England Application February 28, 1949, Serial No. 78,693 In Great Britain May '3,v 1948 ping'head, and has for its object to provide a feeding head adapted to perform a dual function of feeding the strip foil and embossing same.
In the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a bottle capping machine embodying foil feeding mechanism according to this invention.
Figure 2 is a plan view on an enlarged scale of the foil feeding mechanism and adjacent parts of the machine.
Figure 3 is a section on the line 33 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a section on the line 4 l of Fi ure 3.
Figure 5 is an elevation of an adjustment member per se for the drive to the feeding head, and
Figures 6 and 7 are elevations on a further enlarged'scale of cams employed to operate the feeding heads.
Referring to Figures 1 and. 2 the body part comprises a block 8 which is slidably arranged with respect to the capping head 9 so that this block 8 may be reciprocated towards and away from the capping head 9 in a manner hereafter described.
The said block 8 is provided with a slot [8 adapted to receive the strip foil I l and is mounted on a guideway l2 at one end, whilst a shaft l3 adapted for axial movement only, is secured to substantially the centre of the block 8, said shaft l3 taking a bearing in the machine frame l4 so as to support and be instrumental in imparting the required sliding motion to the aforesaid block 8.
The beforementioned slot [8, which is aligned with the capping head 9, forms two jaws, the lower one l5 of which carries a die It and the upper one I! which carries a plunger [3, which plunger I8 is preferably provided with a leather or other pad I8 at its lower end adapted to bear against the die It when the plunger I8 is moved in a downward direction. The upper end of the plunger [8 is engaged by a lever 28 pivoted at its centre about a pin 2| on the upper side of the block 8, whilst the other end of the lever 28, engages the upper end of a rack 22 vertically disposed in the block 8, in a similar manner to the aforesaid plunger l8, but at the other end of said block 8.
The toothed portion 23 of the rack 22 engages 2 a pinion 2d carried in said block 8, said pinion 28 being slidably mounted on a fixed driving shaft 25 passing through said block'S, arranged parallel with the guideway I 2 and supporting and operating shaft 'I3 for said block 8. As
shown the portion of the pinion driving shaft 25..
which passes through the block 8 is of non-circular shape in cross section, and passes through a member 28 having a corresponding hole 21 therein (Figures 4 and 5), said member-26 being secured so as to be adjustable in an angular manner to an extension 28 of said pinion 24, so that angular adjustment of the pinion '24 with respect to its driving shaft 25 can beo'btained. The driving shaft 25 is journalled in vthe 'machine frame M at its other end and 'carries'at this end a pinion 29 which is engaged by a rack 38 carried in the machine frame I i, the lower end of said rack '80 being adapted to follow a suitable driving cam 3| mounted on the shaft 43,
which is driven by the worm gear M. The rack 39 is preferably urged into engagement with the cam 3| bya spring 38 The profile of this driving cam 3| is such that an initial load is applied to the embossing plunger 18 through the medium of the beforementioned rack and pinion mechanism sufficient to emboss the portion of strip foil ll disposed within the slot l8. After the embossing has been effected the load on the plunger I8 is reduced to an extent just suflicient to permit the plunger l8 and die l6 to grip the strip foil II for feeding purposes when a sliding motion is applied to the block 8 as hereinafter explained. Thus by reducing the load on the embossing plunger IS in this way, the load on the driving mechanism is reduced and consequently the power required to operate the machine is lessened.
In order to impart a sliding motion to the block 8 the aforesaid slidable shaft l3 fixed to same, has connected at its other end a suitable linkage 32, which linkage 32 is connected to an arm 33 mounted on a shaft 33 carried by the machine frame hi, said shaft also carrying a pinion 35. This pinion 35 is engaged by a rack 36, which rack 35 at its lower end, follows a further driving cam 3'! mounted on the shaft 43 so that a rotary motion is imparted to the said arm 33, which by means of the said linkage 32 imparts a reciprocatory motion to the said slidable shaft l3 secured to the block 8. This reciprocatory motion is positive in one direction, and in order to effect the return motion, a tension spring 38 is provided which is secured at one end to the block 8, and at the other end to the machine frame l4. Thus the block 8 is moved in one direction by the shaft |3 fixed thereto, by means of the rack 36 and pinion 35, am 33 and connecting linkage 32, and in the opposite direction by the return spring 38.
With reference to Figure 6 a suitable cam 3| is shown which is for use in operating the embossing plunger l8, the embossing taking place when the lower end of the rack 30 bears against the portion 39 of the cam 3|.
After the embossing operation further movement of the cam 3| causes the lower end of the rack 30 to bear against the portion 40 of the surface of the cam 3| to reduce the pressure of the plunger I8 on the embossed portion of the foil II, but retaining sufiicient pressure thereon to grip same as the block 8 moves towards the capping head 9 and thus effect the feeding of the foil to the capping head 9 for the capping operation.
The cam 31 shown in Figure '7, which controls the movement of the block 8 with respect to the capping head 9 features a rising portion 4| on the periphery thereof to operate the rack and pinion mechanism 36, 35, arm 33, linkage 32 and slidable shaft |3 to move the block 8 relatively quickly away from the capping head 9. Whilst the gradual fall 42 of the periphery of said cam permits of the spring 38 drawing the block 8 relatively slowly towards the capping head 9. In this way the block 8 is moved quickly away from the capping head 9 but returns slowly to the latter thus slowly feeding the foil to the capping head and preventing overrun of the foil spool 39.
I claim:
